so those upgrading to the SE from the iPhone 6, 6s, 7, or 8 can expect a device that's the exact same size, weight

This is not true. iPhone 6 is way lighter and also thinner. Apart from that, is a good upgrade unless you don’t want a 6yo design.

The fact that I even found a single price complaint in this thread is hilarious. Remember when the original iPhone was $600 with contract subsidies? And that price irked people so much that they dropped it to—wait for it—$399, still with contract subsidies? And that was base storage if I recall—either 4GB or 2GB, can’t remember. That camera…even more basic things like the lack of an oleophobic coating on the screen. 2G connectivity speeds (if you don’t know how slow that was, literally bless your heart, I’m glad you never had to experience it—especially with how big Apple was on the native YouTube app).
Let’s consider something more ridiculously priced at $400 in 2020—a literal keyboard Apple makes. (Yes, I love my Magic Keyboard, but it happened to come out at a time where I could only justify the price as a birthday present to myself. Kudos to you if you can afford it by other means, genuinely.)

We have come a long way in 13 years yall. I owned both a 6 and a 7 with my brother owning a 6s until he got the X, and all three models are still capable. Still have plenty of friends who got ‘em. To me, the most objective singular argument is the camera upgrade, but not everyone wants/cares about that. It’s just impressive what they’ve done with a single lens.

Also, how do I say this with grace…move the f*** on already with wishes for a headphone jack. It sounds like people in 2006 clamoring for a floppy disk drive. (read: in ‘06 I could easily go in my parents’ drawers and find their floppy disks, but OBVIOUSLY computers manufacturers were DONE putting these readers in them. In advance, kudos to whomever finds an obscure model from ‘06 with a floppy disk drive and completely stunts on my point.)

All this and more for $399. ;)

I see no reason to move up in size for pretty much the same as what I'm using, or could have been using for 6 years but chose not to, while 100% losing the "size", to a new SE. Just not going to happen.

Only if you judge on looks alone. The whole article is literally about how its completely different internally than the previous phones it looks like.

Beyond that, maybe Apple finally takes a look at some real sales numbers and actually talks to customers again… and gives me a reason to spend $1000, that I very willingly would spend, on a new iPhone 12 or 13 "mini". Until then, I won't be buying a new iPhone from Apple.

Can you please point us to these sales numbers that you've seen but Apple is ignoring? I'm not a betting man, but I'm wiling to bet Apple has an entire department dedicated to look at and analyzing those real sales numbers. I could be wrong tho.

The iPhone 8S was a disappointment from Apple and that design is stale for buying a new phone in 2020. In fact, if Apple releases the original SE design at 4.7” then it wouldn't look so bad.

But its cheap! In what ways was it a disappointment? The design is aging, but it allows Apple to save on manufacturing costs by reusing the tooling. Doing a new phone with the same style of the SE but larger would require new tooling and processes, raising prices. If you want a new design, get the XR or 11 (Pro).

It always makes me laugh when people complain about "stale design". It's not a fashion object, it's a phone. The basic shape is a given, that can't be changed. You can change the colours. You can make the corners square, or oval shaped, or bigger or smaller. You can move the buttons, but I don't want them to move the buttons. I want them in the same place on every phone.

iPhone SE means (for the second time now): We stop building the old phone. There will never, ever be a new version of the old phone. Except that we build one model with all the newest technology. Of course it has the same design, nothing wrong with that.

Bought 8. Broke by itself two times. First the battery died on me, Apple replaced the device, the “new one” broke too, speaker on the Touch ID side died. Genius Bar told me that they needed to replace a million parts to repair the device, asking lots of money. To sum up, don’t buy it, worst internal design ever, bound to fail by itself.

sorry to read that but people have had iphones 8 for years and still going just bad luck

The SE, not 8s, was a disappointment to you. Apple is not obliged to produce product with contingent approval from the masses and some products are meant for a certain demographic. This product isn’t for you.

A used XS would be a fantastic upgrade for you. They’re going for like $450 used, just be really careful about who you buy it from - you don’t want a locked one, a stolen one, a financed one, or one that’s had the screen replaced by a 3rd party shop and therefore doesn’t have TrueTone working anymore.

The swipe UI is awesome, FaceID is awesome unless you’re wearing a mask, the taller screen is really fun. The XS has the same extended dynamic range 4K 30fps video feature as the new SE. The SE has a better standard wide camera, but the XS is still decent. The processor speed difference is negligible.

Replaced my 6s with a refurb Xs Max a couple of months ago because the amount of RAM on the 6s is just not very usable at this point if you frequently switch apps. The much larger screen and UI is great, plus I get 3D Touch. The biggest improvement though, is battery life. I used to have to add a battery case just to barely get through the day even with a newly replaced phone battery. Now the Max can easily last me the better part of two days.

I have the same 2018 iPad (my son’s iPad) and it doesn’t happen for me. Are you using last iPadOS?
Yes, always the latest and greatest public release! And I often completely turn the iPad off to restart the iPadOS!

I bought my 6+ as soon as it came out mainly for the screen size. The speed bump sounds nice, but that screen size is just too small for me. And as I hate notches, currently Apple doesn't make any replacement for my phone that I like. When the time comes, if they don't fix the situation, I'll have to source an 8+. Or, of course, I like this team but I could change...

Not really that great.... Apple's fast charging in previous phones fast charge to 80%, the trickle charge the remaining 20%..

But this new SE, it only fast charges to 50% ? That's worse, not better. There is not much else new i would be excited about, but the screen..

For me, i'll keep my 5.5' iPhone 6s Plus.

Bought an iPhone 7 last year - slightly used but brand new (1 week old) for a bargain price as an upgrade from the original SE. Sold me SE for £100.

Love the 7, slim, light, does all I need. A better camera would be nice, but it's a solid fast phone.

Do you have a phone that works well for you now? Are your finances shaky right now with the virus, epic unemployment, and market upheavals? Do you need to use your money for food and rent, or do you have a few bucks that you can drop on the shiny new tech toy that you prolly dont really need? These are some questions to help guide your purchasing decision. Consider the real possibility that by fall (if not sooner) things in the job market and the stock markets are almost certain to be worse, not better. All things considered, I feel it will be safe to start spending on non essential items after a vaccine is developed and distributed. Which prolly won’t be until the end of 2021...let that sink in. In summary, if you need to be careful with your money and you don’t really have a legitimate need to upgrade your tech right now...don’t. Best to be cautious in this most unstable time.

Camera alone is the reason to upgrade from iPhone 7 and any of those other phones
Yes, the camera is a big reason for me (current 7 owner). The other thing is that my battery life is getting pretty bad. So do I want to sink more money into a new battery on a phone that’s already 3 years old?

During this unfortunate period I find my iPhone has become even more important as we cannot visit with family and friends. If my phone was on shakey ground, I would consider the SE, even if I couldn’t pay cash.

The article over looked what for me would be the best selling point of the new SE: a 256GB flash option. But losing the headphone jack would be a royal pain. I've tried dozens of those 3rd party "charge + headphone" lightning adapters, and none of them work that well or last long.

I have a 6s currently. I'll upgrade when it has either a headphone jack or USB-C so that I can continue to use the same pair of wired headphones with my Mac and my laptop without having to mess with plugging in and unplugging dongles all the time. Or, if Apple drops support for the 6s before either of those things happens... well, I guess there's always Android.

Androids are also dropping 3.5mm support. So you might have a hard time going forward if that’s your line in the sand.
