is apple care available if I purchase on a 2 year contract from my provider? or just unlocked versions bought direct from apple?

Yes, I think you have up to 90 days to add AppleCare if you provide the original receipt or something to that effect. I am sure there is detailed information on Apple's site.

I imagine any manufacturer does their own drop tests using industry grade high speed cameras and not sure what they use as a pass parameter. I never dropped any of my iPhones on pavement. I usually drop it when I trip over the power cord on my carpeted floor. And then it is maybe a metre up so I hope mine doesn't get that much damage.

I do not disagree, your point is valid. However it's the so called "leaks" that were so frequent and substantial that for all intents and purposes were designed to garner attention, continued unabated well after Apple most certainly knew that Sapphire would not be used on iPhone's.

I don't buy that at all - you are still trying to say that Apple leaked info on the sapphire (and everything else) on purpose. They just didn't do that.

Funny thing is, if this was a Samsung product, you'd all be screaming about how poorly it is designed.

Apple-apologists.

Samsung's New Ad

"We tossed the new iPhone 6 Plus from the Empire State building with a brick on top of it and it failed miserably! But when we gently dropped the Samsung Galaxy S5 from a 3-foot high table to the the carpet, it survived with only a couple of minor scratches (although the operating system was completely FUBAR). Once again, Samsung outshines Apple!"

I never understand why these people spend all this money on an iPhone just to drop it on the ground on YouTube for a few views. Give me that damn Phone if you're gonna Eff it up. Sheesh.

And they should stop car crash testing too because it's bad for car sales.

People want to know the structural limit of devices.
What's wrong with exposing the device weaknesses due to it's thinness and lack of protection in the case frame.

If this was a samsung product, you'd be screaming about how the test is unfair and then you'd kick a baby seal.

Samsung-apologist. Did I do it right?

I'm throughly annoyed with Apple's "seamless design." The screen is bound to come apart from the body of the phone. It's literally just glued to the body. This is the makings of a disaster. I know that I'll have to take extra care of my iPhone 6 but this is a bit ridiculous.

I will gladly use ad block on these kind of videos. The are garbage and take no creativity to produce. Its just crap to get views. Same goes for game console smashes android screen cracks.

Very very very poor example. The actual car companies are the ones that do crash tests. They write it off on taxes as part of the business. The person in the YouTube video was an average joe. He's not from a major company who spends millions of dollars doing drop tests.

Get a good case. Case closed. Yes, pun intended.

I saw the video of the 'First buyer of an iPhone' from Australia, and he DROPPED IT live on camera.

Hope it survived...:eek::eek::eek:

This is bitter sweat too. This is the first time I'll not be able to get the latest/greatest. Can't afford it after losing my job...

But enjoy all! Maybe I can get in on the iPhone 7, with built-in Traffic Phaser and mind reader...

Without standardized testing, it's hard to draw definitive conclusions.

I think that's pretty standard, don't need a full on experiment with a high N. Thinner = fragile. Thicker glass, guys, get over this unhealthy obsession for thinner devices (and throw a bigger battery in it).

I don't believe Apple designs phones so that they can be purposefully dropped and survive without real damage.

In my opinion, the purpose of the video is to try and create a problem where there shouldn't be one.

I am waiting for the Star Trek iPhone model. I have a lot of stunning I would like to do.

I have never owned an Apple iDevice without a case. Always do an OtterBox, they are heavy, but after dropping my iPad 2 onto a solid concrete floor from 4 feet, and it surviving, I've been a believer.

The SO dropped their iPad 3 from around 2 feet to a solid ceramic tile floor and cracked the screen all the way across. I kept telling them they ought to get a case, more than the Apple fold-over non-case, but they blew me off. Theirs cracked first, and they saw mine fall, and told me that I'd need a new iPad now because surely it didn't survive, and when it did, it was interesting... I think they are sold on the idea of a case now.

And sure, home insurance may cover it, but the time and BS to get the claim, and them dropping you afterwards isn't worth it...

Yeah pretty much. These tests prove nothing, not for apple or android. Like people are going to strategize how not to drop their phones after watching this?

the design of the phone looks like it would be more prone to cracking. There is no plastic compared the previous versions of the phone surrounding the glass so any impact would resonate throughout the phone and the glass will shatter vs. the aluminum which will dent. Just an assumption.

Maybe it's all a ruse to get your to purchase Applecare :p

What difference does it matter who conducts the tests as long as its a valid test case?

And you're wrong about car companies doing the crash tests.
Yes, they have internal testing, which no one gets the results.
Then they VOLUNTEERLY provide their cars to the NTSB to conduct tests to certify they cars for safety.

I'm just seeing excuses that testing that represents an iPhone in a bad light is not welcomed even if valid and true.

What do you see as the point of the phone drop tests?
Forget iPhone. Any phone drop test.
