Step 1: make flimsier phone
Step 2: tell people to spend more money to get added insurance on it
Step 3: profit!

To be fair I think it's foolish to buy ANY electronic device over $500 without a 2 year (or longer) warranty. In the case of a phone or something you hold when you use it, it's even more important.

Then someone at their Apple store reads MacRumors, checks the video, sees that they got an Applecare+ warranty replacement for an item that they damaged intentionally, and suddenly they go to court for insurance fraud.

I'm pretty sure the guys doing the drop test weren't the purchasers of the phones. At least I hope no one is that stupid. If they weren't the purchasers there's nothing Apple can do but honor the claim. Pretty much all the droptest phones from all brands are covered under some extended warranty. That's why the testers are so willing to test.

They edited it out? Why?

Not sure why they did it but it's pretty darn clear around 3:45 the screen separates. I can't begin to fathom why that was edited out.

I think what this test fails to note, is that the iPhone 6 and 6+ are so advanced, that they have become sentient. Someone recorded their electronic emissions as they powered up, and then were suddenly dropped.

First, the thoughts of the iPhone 6+ ...

Hello?

Why am I here? What’s my purpose in life?

And hey, what’s about this whistling roaring sound going past? Perhaps I can call that ... "wind"! Yes!

Never mind, hey, this is really exciting, so much to find out about, so much to look forward to! Calls. Videos. NFC payments. I’m quite dizzy with anticipation!

And wow! Hey! What’s this thing suddenly coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding name like... ow...… ound... round... "ground"! That’s it! That’s a good name – "ground"!

I wonder if it will be friends with me ??

And the rest, after a sudden cracking thud, was silence.

Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the regular iPhone 6 as it fell was ...

"Oh no, not again."

Many people have speculated that if we knew exactly why the iPhone 6 had thought that, we would know a lot more about the nature of the universe than we do now.

After anyone drops their phone, as long as it still works; the show still goes on. lol.. Don't Drop The Phone or do the right thing and get an outterbox..

I'm covered by the EU for those 2 years :). I don't think it covers accidental damage, but all electronics have 2 years manufacturers fault cover.

Did you watch this drop test? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JS8f-hVsDzA

And not all cases are bulky. I have a thin, clear silicon case for my 5s which adds little to no bulk at all. I mainly use it to protect the aluminum and chamfered edges from getting nicked.

I've seen two so far that contradict either other so I'm prepared to wait to see how others fare. I don't buy iPhones lightly (I get them full price/sim free).

Worse then the iPhone 5
It seems that the stronger iphone design was the 4 and it gets weaker with each new design. Although to be fair that is what you would get with a thin phone.

Actually, by all accounts the iPhone 5 (and 5s, and 5c) were significantly more durable than the 4 and 4s - at least when it comes to durability of the screen glass in drop tests.

Okay

So the recommendation then is try not to take your expensive portable computer with a bigger glass screen and drop it on a concrete floor. Good call.

They should put out an advisory too not to store them overnight in a glass of water.

If you start thin[ner] then adding a case (talking a well designed option from Elago, Spigen) keeps the whole shebang thin. If it was already on the chubby side, a case would compound the problem.

I love the fact my iP5 with a nice case is still thinner than most phones (at least at the time of release). :)

I know it's not too bad, but to me it seems like cases fly in the face of Apple's incredible (though this time potentially faulty) designs.

I used to have a thin case for my 4S but I found even that added unnecessary bulk (plus made it harder to get out of my pocket due to the silicone material!)

So, let's see. I had an iPhone 4 and a 4S. Both were extremely durable. Never had a case on them, and dropped them both plenty of times. Very, very few scratches, no nicks, no breaks.

Then I got a 5. Had it for about two days and dropped it. Scratched the Hell out of the back, and learned my lesson. Bought a case. Never broke, though. When I bought the 5S I played it safe and bought the Apple case from the beginning. Dropped it plenty. No breaks. Couple of small nicks on the chamfered edge of the front.

Now I'm getting a phone that apparently is prone to breaking. But at least they're getting thinner. Is this progress? :roll eyes:

Jony, you really do need some professional help to deal with your design anorexia.

No, no, no. Not the manufacturer. The seller. If you prove that something went wrong because of a fault that was present when you bought it.

These people did not take basic PHYSICS and they are S####D!, Hello, have you hard about "Elastic Limit".
You Jaw, bones ,skull will brake! Sweeping test!

It's not Gorilla Glass it's ion-strengthened glass

It's not Gorilla Glass it's ion-strengthened glass

Well, that blows. So much for all the people that said that the new version of Gorilla Glass is so impermeable to damage when compared to sapphire.

You know you joke about it but you know there are idiots out there that are going to do that.

Perhaps people should be more careful with expensive things.

As another poster in another thread said the other day about how he's never used a case on any phone and they always look like new- How often do you drop your sandwich? Your banana?

Read it aloud, folks-

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS!

If I used a banana as much as I use my iPhone, it would quickly get all brown and soggy...
