iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus Get Cracked in First Drop Test

This was obvious since most impacts with the 4 / 5 series phones have a buffer zone of the metal band and little plastic / rubber ring that surrounds the glass. It's even inset slightly behind the rubber to help a little. They have to fall at a relatively specific angle to directly contact the glass (granted in a direct, initial impact that plastic ring doesn't help an awful lot, but it's better than nothing).

However, these new handsets have glass which sits ontop of the metal and a much wider angle that the glass can be contacted with directly. The glass is also thinner and tapers to a very thin profile. They will undoubtedly fare worse. I'm not excusing Apples design methodology, it is a shame this models will end up being more fragile than the previous generations.

The video on android-authority has been edited to hide the fact that the glass shattered and came off!
Watch carefully (in 1080p) starting at 3:46

I thought I saw that too, the first time I mentioned this (Post #121), I thought it may be fake by editing at the end. But why would Android Authority post such a fake video making the iPhone 6 appear to pass the drop tests with flying colors?

I thought a drop test is to show the ability to prevent something from happening? For instance, a strong enough case for the phone that will show if dropped, nothing would happen.

Sooo what's the relevance in this? What's my take-away?

I look after my phones never dropped my iPhone 5 since i had it, i hope the next plus will have a sapphire screen as my telco is offering me a free upgrade next year.

You do realize sapphire is more brittle and prone to shatter than glass, right?

It's no big deal.

Under Settings > Gyroscope make sure "Feline Reorientation" is set to "off". That will ensure that the iPhone always drops into its back and not its face.

I just about spit coffee all over my iPad! That has to be one of the funniest things I've read in a while. Thanks for starting my Friday off with a laugh.

The scientific precision of these tests is amazing! This is the best and most important test to see how resistant a screen is. It's such a precise test with all the variables taken into account. Only the best experts can perform this very scientific test...pffff LOOOL, I'm sorry, I'm sorry LOL, I was always bad at trying to keep a straight face for too long when talking rubbish :D

Well that's as expected then. The new desig isn't as durable so if you have the phone, especially the bigger one, get a case which will ruin the thinnes and make it even bigger, but it will protect it of course.

I never understand why these people spend all this money on an iPhone just to drop it on the ground on YouTube for a few views. Give me that damn Phone if you're gonna Eff it up. Sheesh.

It's because they make it all back, and some, in advertising. Very simple.

Any word on when the iPhone 6 Plus Otterbox will be available? I need a durable case and I've always used Otterbox, but if it's going to be November before it ships, I need to find a temporary solution to make it drop proof.

You would think such an important tool, crafted by the company who provides that tool to a good percentage of the world, would construct it with some utilitarian thought in mind, but it seems with Ive at the helm it's gone all aesthetics.

Breaking News: Car buyer demands Audi design their sedans to be as rugged as a Hummer. In other news, why does water have to be so wet? Outraged water drinkers demand answers.

I don't see how the Apple leather case would provide any protection for being dropped on the screen. It just doesn't provide much of any front protection and is designed to fit into the curve along the sides of the phone (I have the case with me now).

Dropping your phone on any of its surfaces can break the screen or stress the glass to the point where it's more susceptible to breakage in subsequent drops. Apple's leather case provides a better grip, reducing the likelihood of dropping the phone, protects the aluminum case against scratches and dents, and provides some protective cushioning should you drop the phone on its back or edge.

Greater glass surface area means greater expectation of damage.

Curvature of display means side or corner drop damaging display increased.

Flat face drop same thing because curvature.

Surprisingly that protruding camera experienced no major trauma.

You do realize that the purpose behind a "drop test" isn't to actually test anything, but to satisfy the need for Schadenfreude that people get when they see something expensive get destroyed?

The case seems pretty slick to me and keeps popping out of my fingers (in comparison my my 4S without case).

Do ads really pay that much? With as many people have videos on there with lots of views, seems like ad agencies should be broke by now. I just have a hard time believing ads pay out all this money people are always talking about.

Maybe I just don't want to believe it because with every fiber of my being I HATE the constant bombardment of advertisements. Bah humbug!

Advertising generates vast amounts of money. Google and Facebook built their entire business models around it. Guess which tech companies are most distrusted by users?

Remember, if you're not paying for the product, you are the product.
