No, the 6+ is in no way a replacement of an iPad Mini. I thought I could get by with reading book on a 6+, tried it in store, still too small for reading. Have to turn page every 5-6 sentences. Though it's a step up from turning 2-3 sentences on a phone, still sub optimal.

4th year med student here. I'm considering doing the same thing. I've had an iPhone 5 and an iPad Mini Retina that I've used on the wards and it's been great. I've used the Epic iPad app (Canto) and hoping to do the same with the 6 Plus.

Looking at getting a 64 6 Plus as soon as I'm able. My wife and I are both eligible for upgrades with ATT right now.

On a side note, I just found out that NotesPlus is being made for the 6 Plus. That's one app I've used on the iPad and iPad Mini quite a bit.

Getting the following case:

Would love to hear from more med students, residents and attendings on this thread re: the specific question from the OP.

You folks might also get some feedback on the iPad forum so post a query there.

Here? Some maybe but not the majority. Most are only going by size and for things like texting, browsing, videos, playing games, etc. You know, those looking at it from a consumption device perspective.

At least this article goes into it from a business user perspective and I think there are links below it that lead to being more informative from your standpoint:

Personally, yes it's the perfect iPhone for me. I've replaced my iPhone 5S and iPad mini with an iPhone 6 Plus. Not felt myself reaching for the mini once and already listed it on eBay.

There's no way I'll go back.

No way. The iPad mini is a perfect tablet. The 6 plus is too big to be a phone and too small to be a tablet.

Screen is big enough for me to replace my iPad retina and my wife has replaced her iPad mini. If I had the 6 Plus for my vacation in Hawaii, I would not have brought my iPad mini.

Walk around with a checkbook and that's just about the size of the iPhone 6 Plus. If your using safari to view the charts and data, then your fine. If it's a specific iPad app your using, then your sol unless there is a version for iPhone.

I agree. My iPad 2 feels heavy and redundant now. I always thought of the mini as a halfway house. I think the sales will plummet.

I have the 5 and Mini. The 6+ has a higher resolution (pixels and points) than the Mini. If you put two 6+s next to each other, they are about the same size as the Mini. Also, given how the 6+ has multi panel apps built-in (Mail, Messages, Calendar, etc.), developers should realize that and update their apps accordingly. Many apps are no longer iPad only. Most are universal apps that adapt to the device they are running on.

I don't have a need for my Mini anymore. I was going to replace it this year when the new iPads are released in October but I might think twice.

Actually giving my wife my mini retina once my 6+ arrives. I had the nite 3 and that size is perfect for me as an all in one.

The aspect ratio is just completely different in the iPad Mini versus the 6+. Both devices exist for different purposes. Nearly every podcast or tech page I have looked at has serious doubts regarding the ability to replace an iPad Mini with a 6+

I can see how it might be a replacement for some depending on your uses, but the mini is the perfect tablet for me and gets most of my use. The 5.5 is ok on the go, but I'd never use it at home if i had the mini by my side.

If you're trying to save money, I don't see the point. The mini retina is basically selling for 275 with student discount on Best buy. You are spending almost a grand on the 6+. The mini is cheap enough to keep around and enjoy for years even if you use it less and less.

I think i agree.

I was looking at the possibility of replacing my 5c and mini with the 6+.
After checking it out in the store today I think I'll wait for a couple of years on that.
The mini is just right. The screen size and especially the keyboard on the 6+ don't work that well. I can type very fast and with the mini I never miss the buttons.

Agreed. There appears to be a solid line between tablet and phablet. If I had to guess, 6.5 inches might be that line.

You get used to the 6 plus keyboard pretty quick. It's easier to use than my iPhone 5. Much less typos.
Like most things though it's horses for courses.

I don't think there is any doubt the 6+ is better than the 5 for most of us, but the real question is how it compares to the iPad Mini.

I was using both last night. They don't compare. One is a phone and the other is a tablet. The screen size is too different to think one can replace the other.

Maybe. I will try it out over and over again. I don't buy products I haven't tested anyway.
My next data plan is due in June (even though my mini is already pretty ****ed up :( ) by then the next iPhone line will be coming up and the 6+ ready for discounts. i think the large iPhones are here to stay and I will consider it then.

the 6+ is only better if it replaces my mini. Without that i take my 5c anytime!

I have both the mini with retina and the iPhone 6 plus, but I can't see the Plus replacing the mini. As big as the plus is, it's not an iPad or iPad size.....it's a phablet, and with that being the case, its sort of a combo, but definitely not a full replacement for an iPad or iPad mini.

Being a grad student, I bought it to read pdf files and jot notes down with. An iPad and iPhone all in one theory. I can't see my self buying an iPad so I thought this would be just fine.

I'd love to replace my iPhone 5 + mini retina with a 6 Plus, but I read online that using phones on the wards is more frowned upon than tablets (because it looks like you're texting, even if you're using Medscape).

What has been your experience? Has anyone hassled you about using a device on the wards? Do you ask permission before each clerkship, or just use it with your best judgment?

I have only had family medicine so far and restricted my use of my mini to the back office where we'd retreat to study between patients.

I've considered this as well.

I managed to get to the :apple: Store today to try out each one.

My tests were:

Safari
Pages
iMovie
One handed typing

The 6 was nice, very nice. But it didn't seem much different than my 5 except for one semi-major thing.

The keyboard. It is larger enough that the damn thing no longer hits the key next to the one I intended. It was easier to type mistake free on the 3 and 4 series than the 5 for some reason.

Then I held the 6+. Now there was a difference. I re-ran my usage tests and things were just better on the Plus.

They checked my 5 serial number and would give me $205 for that.

I can now easily see replacing my 5 and nrMini for a 6+ That also saves me the data plan from the Mini.

My only concern is that which was mentioned before: app configurations.

I'll wait and see for a bit on that.

I don't see it as an iPad mini replacement and decided to go with the iPhone 6. For starters, it won't run iPad apps. More importantly, the screen, even on the Plus, is significantly smaller. You can't compare a 5.5" 16x9 screen with a 7.9" 4x3 screen. They are in different leagues altogether. There is far more room on the latter, and it is easier to type on it.

I'm still considering whether it can replace my Air (tradeoffs of course, but I think it's possible). If I had an iPad Mini I think that decision would be made already.

even though this is only day 2 but i find myself using my iPad air less now and doing more on my 6plus. i won't retire my iPad yet though

I've had no issues with using my Mini or phone on the wards. I simply take them out when it's clear info is required (i.e. - a pharm question is raised or when presenting a patient to an attending). I've just used my best judgement on all rotations and never had an issue (technologically or otherwise).
