this was my intent too , to replace a 5 and a mini, I'd say after using the 6+ this aft as a web surfing tool (my intent), it can be done, but it's on the edge. I still have not decided if I can make this replace both of them....

I realize I'm talking to an incredibly small minority of people here, but is anyone replacing their iPad mini with the iPhone 6+? I'm a medical student who uses the iPad mini to pull up lab values on patients while rounding in a hospital. Since I didn't want to carry around extra weight, I have been using the mini as my phone for the last year. It's been a great experience as far as voice quality goes (no one can tell I'm using google voice/hangouts on my iPad), but there are times where I maybe don't have a pair of headphones and I don't want to talk on speaker. And using the mini would allow for an even smaller device to look up labs with....

Anyways, has anyone done something similar?

Personally, my choice is the iPad mini and a smaller phone. Here's something else to consider - if you are using your phone for everything, you are going to run the battery down quickly, and you may not be able to charge it. That won't be as much of an issue if you have the phone separate from your reference device.

Your a Grad Student with money to purchase a 6+. Nice. :apple:

900-1000 bucks for a mini computer you will use for hundreds, if not thousands of hours over a few years. That's really not that unaffordable. Thats what I tell myself anyways :D

Waiting on my plus to arrive, but I've already sold my 1st gen iPad Mini. After seeing other posts, and going through reviews, I am happy I did so. I'm just curious as to how the plus will be when trying to read something from iBooks. I used my iPad Mini primarily to read.

No, the iPhone will not replace the mini.

I will keep the 6, mini and air.
The 6+ is on back order and it may be cancelled.
The mini sits on my desk at work and is used when I am traveling. It also serves as my dashboard, GPS and radio in my truck.
The air is mainly for at home use.
The 6 will fit nicely in my pocket, view email, text and surf the web in a pinch.

I highly doubt I will upgrade either ipad this next round

It's working for me as a replacement. I had the iPhone 5 and iPad mini and sold them both and the 6+ is working for me as a replacement

What do you do with it and what have you missed being able to do before on a mini? (so far)

Me too

I have a 6 Plus and a Retina Mini and I haven't looked at the mini since I got the Plus. I'm not sure if it's because the Plus is the new hotness.

My biggest fear is to get rid of the mini and regret it.

My trio for the past year has been: iPhone 4S, iPad mini Retina & 15 MBP Retina. My iPhone 6 Plus arrived Friday. Love it....a keeper! I sold the iPad today. I travel for work each week (consulting). I want to test if if the 6 plus can replace (for the most part) the function of the iPad. For me, the iPad is 99.9% content consumption (videos, Internet, apps). If I discover the iPad is still needed, I'll repurchase one of the new ones this when they are refreshed in October. The way I look at it, I've given myself options by selling the iPad.

Didn't think about that. That's a good way to look at it.

I'd love to replace my iPhone 5 + mini retina with a 6 Plus, but I read online that using phones on the wards is more frowned upon than tablets (because it looks like you're texting, even if you're using Medscape).

What has been your experience? Has anyone hassled you about using a device on the wards? Do you ask permission before each clerkship, or just use it with your best judgment?

I have only had family medicine so far and restricted my use of my mini to the back office where we'd retreat to study between patients.

I also have the same concerns. I have an attending with a flip phone and he casts sideways glances when I am using the ipad. I've been using the ipad by placing it on a table or ledge where everyone can see I'm looking up lab values or relevant info on uptodate to avoid misunderstandings.

I got a Plus and Mini and plan to keep both. The Mini is a wifi device while the Plus is a cellular device in places without a good internet connection. The Mini is wide enough to make a big difference when reading and browsing for me to have a reason to keep both around. Not to mention if I need good phone battery, I can opt for using the Mini and let my phone charge/sit idle.

To me, the Plus functions more as a laptop replacement for writing because it's big enough to type pretty well on and I can always use a bluetooth keyboard.

I don't think that the Plus is quite there yet to fully replace a Mini, but once iPad apps become open to the Plus (maybe iO9?) it could have a real argument for that.

As an iPad mini owner who just got her iPhone 6+ today, I fully expect to be able to sell my iPad mini. Frankly, the real estate on the plus is great, and I have a foldable bluetooth keyboard, so I can write on it, which was one of the reasons I had the iPad Mini (convenient writing with no laptop needed). As soon as scrivener comes out, I'll be able to travel with just the work laptop and the iPhone.

That sounds pretty awesome. My iPad is getting a lot less use after the 6+ came home, that's for sure.

Glad someone brought this up. Magazines are the ideal size on the mini iPad which I love and use the most. I prefer to perform quick edits on the pages iPad app on the mini instead of my macbook if I am away. I couldn't imagine using the 6+ for those type of tasks. Therefore, I have decided on the 6 and will still keep my mini retina. Best device I've bought.

Do you think it might be better just to forego the iPad and stick to pocket books? I wouldn't want to risk looking bad if I knew I was getting sideways glances!

I guess it varies quite a bit by rotation. Right now on my medicine clerkship nobody bats an eye if someone uses a tablet or even a phone. So on this one, a 6 Plus would actually be nice to have. But it's only 2 more months on IM, and no way of knowing how open the other rotations will be. And besides, the EMR we use is a lot easier to read on the Mini than on my iPhone, and I doubt they'll update it to take full advantage of the 6+ screen

Just wanted to update all of you who may be thinking of making the same switch... My iPhone 6 plus was NOT an adequate replacement for the iPad mini. It was not even close. Much more cumbersome to make calls with on the iPhone 6 plus. It is at once too large to hold and too thin to comfortably sit in your hand. You are forced to pinch too forcefully because it is so thin and I found it at times painful to hold. Speaking of pain, the area between the metal and the screen has been "catching" my hair when I talk on the phone. And in the medical world specifically (or at meetings for office people) people think you're texting vs looking up relevant material. Also, the (software only) orientation lock only locks to portrait orientation in the plus vs. any orientation in the iPad with the hardware lock. Finally, many websites give you the crappy phone/mobile versions of their sites.

Bottom line is it was too small to be a good iPad and too big to be a phone. Others above clearly make it work though, so obviously take my words with a grain of salt. I just bought an awesome new condition iPhone 4s off eBay for 179 and I will just use that as my small phone and keep my iPad as an ipad. :)

Dude, these attendings are crusty old guys with flip phones. you never know! :)

Really?? I think iPhone 6 Plus is a lot closer to iPad Mini than iPhone 5S, especially for web browsing.
I prefer to write my schedule, thesis, with a stylus pen on iPhone 6 Plus than the iPad Mini
iPad Mini is too heavy, compared to the 6 Plus by the way. And you can only hold it less than an hour without your arms hurting unlike the iPhone 6 Plus that you can easily hold it for more than 6 hours straight as a business woman like me.

That is why I gave my iPad to those one of my family since I don't use it anymore, and I really feel sad that those iPad Mini users after buying the 6 plus eventually sell it.

I think they are getting poor, financial issues, or something like that. If they are really practical/wise person they should have just give it to those one of their family member not selling their iPad mini they don't use on eBay. Selling a device you don't use is a sign of getting poor. After they woke up, they will realize that their iPad is no more, but already sold out on eBay.
