Here's my story:

I preordered a 6 for in store pickup. I have a 5s now (got that on launch day). I find the back of the 6 to be pretty hideous and cheap looking. Tomorrow morning, I'll go in and try out the demo units. If they look as bad as they do in pictures, I'm gonna go cancel my pickup and tell them to give the phone to someone else.

From what I can tell, the 6 (at least the back of it) is a real step backwards. The 4/5/5s design is so unique and brilliant. I'm sure the new one feels great in the hand with the curves, so I'm gonna try to go in with an open mind (I did already pay for this thing, after all), but I kind of see where this is going.

Didn't feel at all like a Samsung.
Maybe a bit of the contact paper they line draws with would help

For me it was like moving to the iPad Air .

At forts it does feel "cheaper" as you say. Though that's only cause the 5 feels more solid. For me the 5 felt cheaper than the 4.

Bravo for brining Samsung somehow into this thread

A guy in the office got one, the buttons didn't feel as loose as the ones in store - so at least that's a positive, not all devices have the dodgy buttons.

Still didn't like the back or slippery rounded edges though.

It's the first of a bigger redesign. It's going to have quirks.

Why the "S" updates are always the ones to go for.

At OP

You can wait till 6S but high chances are that it will look exactly like current iPhone 6. Prepare to be disappointed.

4 and 4S were the best with so much glass. Steve described the quality as Leica-like, and I agree.

However, those designs were heavy and thick, so Apple got away from it.

I almost wonder if they hoped the 5C would have taken off last year? Then the 6 could have been all-plastic. Instead, they decided we do want aluminum, so they had to do the funny antennas and whatnot.

Got to defend the OP - I just received my iPhone 6 and the build of it feels cheap in comparison to the 5s.

Perhaps it is intentional, you know, making the phone bigger so had to reduce weight, but it feels plasticky.

The antenna bands on the back are hideous, but I will get a case that covers most of it so not bothered about that.

The home button sounds hollow if you tap it gently. This doesn't feel like a "good button vs bad button luck of the draw" kind of thing... it feels like they have reduced whatever is inside to save weight (or to fit the thinner form).

The screen is very nice - but the OS is rife with what appears to be either poor anti-aliasing on fonts or image-based text that is scaled up for the screen size.

For anyone who has a 6, go to the camera and look at the text for (Square, Pano, Video etc) - very fuzzy.

The overall size is just about comfortable to use one handed (for the 6, not 6+) but subconsciously, I keep switching to two hands, which makes me think I must feel uneasy holding it.

Personally, I would have preferred it to be a little smaller and weightier (robust feeling like the 5s - which was lighter than the 4, but still have a certain solidness about it).

Not enough money to upgrade? Too bad.

Again, typical Apple fanboy douche response. I suspect money did not even come into the equation regarding his thought process.. Believe it or not, most people who choose to stick with their current phone or purchase an Android device are not poor, and could easily purchase an iPhone should they feel like it or if the device warrants it.

Actually I care about his story. Gave me food to thought. What I don't care about: Asses who post "Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd nobody cares about your story"

Exactly. £550 on a premium Android device, or £600 on the iPhone 6. It's hardly a financial consideration.

Going from the 4s to the 5, the 5 felt cheap because it weighed so much less. I feel my 6 Plus is a rock solid bit of kit.

Perhaps the store model has loose buttons because eager customers are constantly pawing over it and abusing it?

In a matter of hours? That wouldn't say much for the longevity would it. Regardless, loose buttons have been part of the iPhone for years and it's pot luck whether you get them or not. QC on the i5 and 5S took a noticeable tumble IME.
