One aspect that's changed rapidly in the last year is the collapse of iPhone resale value. Therefore its crucial that one chooses wisely. I used to be able to resell my excellent condition phone after the first six months for a price close to what I paid. Apple was known for their high resale prices.

Those days are over.

Now on the wholesale market my $1,035 iPhone is only worth a paltry $430, that's as of yesterday. Therefore if one is going to spend a vast amount of money on an iPhone, it's best to be aware that you'll take a massive loss if you attempt to get out of it. iPhone's have lost their value.

I had my iPhone 5 for 2 years and sold it for just under 50% of its value at the end of that period. I didn't think that was bad at all and when I consider comparable Android handsets are only selling for a fifth of their original value, I think you still get a good second hand deal with the iPhone.

Those prices are steep. I bought a $849.00 6+ 64GB Gold yesterday with $99 Apple Care which cost me $1024.41 tax included, Then, today I bought an apple silicone case for it which added another $42.41. That's $1075 and I'm having a hard time believing a phone can get to the $1000 mark.

I'm going to make a full payment on my CC in the next few days because I don't want to see the bill.

Maybe I'm missing something but isn't this the iPhone's actual price? In the UK a 6+ 64bg is £699 and Apple care £79 so a total of £778 which according to google is $1218.69 no case included.

It's really hard to guide you unless we know what you do with the smartphone.

If you're big on camera quality AND are a big Apple user (Macs, Apple TV, iPads), then it only makes to seriously consider the iPhone.

Otherwise, I don't think it's worth it at that price. For a premium experience, I think the Moto X 2014 beats the iPhone 6. It's just as fast and smooth, but also have the best hands free assistant in the market. You can set your own "phrase". "Hey Jarvis, anyone" anyone? The battery is probably not as good as the iPhone 6 but you have the turbo charger which can charge the battery real quick. Again, this is if you don't care about having the best camera quality.

This. For the price, I may as well buy an air ticket and travel to the nearest Apple store in the US to get an iPhone.

And to your question, it ultimately depends on how financially well-off you are, but I would say "forget it" and go with a much cheaper Android phone.

Well, it's not that expensive that it justifies the air ticket price...

----------

Worth and value are subjective. If you get value and usefulness out of a less expensive phone, then that's great. Do so. Many people enjoy the experience that iOS and the iPhone bring so its worth the price to many of us.

Besides, for my I usually pay 199 (or a bit more) for my phones, iPhone or android so I'm not real paying more then.

That is precisely my question.

I do own an iPhone 5 and I do not want to downgrade to a worse experience than I have now. However, smarphones that cost the same as the iPhone 6 in the US are selling for much less in Brazil. Do they provide a similar experience?

I tried the Samsung Galaxy S4 before and, despite many people saying it was better than the iPhone, I found the experience of using it mediocre.

I use the smartphone to check e-mails, browse the Internet, maps, alarm clock, some office stuff and some other stuff. General use, but very heavy use.

I don't take too many photos, so the camera quality is not really an issue here. The camera in the iPhone 5 is good enough; of course a better camera would be welcome, but this is not a deal breaker.

The deal breaker here is the ergonomics and user experience. I tried a Samsung Galaxy S4 and it was not smooth. It was slow, the touch screen was crap and not precise enough, the user interface was crap, it was a nightmare to hold in the hands, not comfortable at all. I gave up and bought an iPhone 5.

I don't want the same experience to be replicated here. The new Droid Turbo, for instance, seems to beat the iPhone 6 in terms of specs. But the Galaxy S4 was also better than the iPhone 5 on paper; however, it was a mediocre phone in real usage.

I don't really want to sell the iPhone 5, I will just give it to someone. I can afford the iPhone 6 and it won't make a big difference for me if I buy it or another phone or if I don't buy another phone at all.

I just want to make sure that I am buying the best phone in the market, and that I am not throwing money away. I can pay for the iPhone 6, and I will gladly pay for it if it provides the best experience and if nothing else can compare to it.

What I don't want is to throw money away.

I don't want to buy an iPhone 6 if I can get a similar (or almost similar) experience for US$ 300 less.

And I don't want to buy an Android phone for US$ 300 less and then find out it is a crappy phone and have to fork another US$ 1,200 to buy an iPhone 6.

Last year, I bought a Samsung Galaxy S4 for about US$ 1,000. Two weeks later, I gave the S4 to my mother and spent another US$ 1,000 to buy an iPhone 5. I don't want that to happen again.

I think you would be happy with the Moto X for that cost. Most don't even bother to alter the UI since the experience is very good and there is minimal amount of bloatware as well.

Battery life and camera aren't great but there are trade offs no matter which smartphone you go with.

^ This. Resale value means nothing to me, couldn't care less. When it's time to buy a new phone, I buy a new phone - I either gift my old one to a friend/family member as an upgrade to their older phone, or take whatever they give me on trade-in.

It's worth it to me because I like iOS and how it integrates with the Apple ecosystem (all my computers are Macs). I've played with Android phones a bit and don't like the UI, can't find what I'm looking for, don't want to deal with malware and so forth. I don't care about rooting, custom ROMs, etc. - I'm not that into tinkering with my phone and don't get "bored" with a phone's OS. I've never even jailbroken any of my iPhones to play with it, not worth the time to me.

All things considered, I'd pay full price for an iPhone before I'd take an Android phone for free. Just not my cup of tea. And you couldn't PAY me enough to use a Windows phone. My .02, YMMV, etc.

Well I usually buy my phones on contract, although I did pay for the note 3 out right, with the proceeds of my iPhone 5S sale. I've always paid an upfront cost for my iPhones between £100-300 and I've also paid to finish a contract so that I can upgrade early. So in the end I've always paid between £400-£500 for my iPhones. I've never paid an upfront cost for any of the android phones I got on contract and most were bought within the upgrade period.

Its basically win win when you buy an iPhonw.

For a start, you get the most refined (recent mishaps not withstanding) user experience out there, along with the most refined apps out there. Because of both of these things however, Google has wisely put a lot of support into iOS as well, so while its not the complete Google experience, the apps they've released on iPhone up to now allow you to have the best of both worlds. The Google search app for example, is stunning since they updated it with material design last week.

Google's continued support of iOS AND it's own offerings means I can have the benefits that come with owning the Apple ecosystem, and get the most significant benefits of being part of Google's, like Google Now & Google Maps.

Have the best of both worlds, I have a iphone 6 plus as well as a 6 and my trusty Note 4. The one that makes me smile the most at the moment is my Note 4, however my 6 Plus is like a pair of comfy slippers. Old tried and tested and doe the job well. but nothing fancy.

iPhone 6, is it worth 150-200% the price of Android high-end phones?

It is almost the same in other parts of the world (in my country the price is $863). No explanation. It just costs more outside the US. Same with Macs.

Don't forget to add sales tax. Prices in the US Apple store are displayed without taxes.

Adding the Germany usual 19% and the US-iPhone is almost identical in price.

Although sales taxes in the US are very low to zero compared to Germany. To compare them fair, you have to add your countries taxes to the US price.

Why the hell is it so much more expensive in Brazil? Here in the US I paid $650 for a 16GB iPhone 6. In Brazil it cost $1100? That's an insane jump.

That's is why a lot of Brazilian come to the US to shop. They are always at the Apple Store in Orlando Fl. Most of them buy there Apple products in the US.

What I meant to say was that I find it astonishing that a phone can get to a $1000 mark. But yes, that was the actual price I paid here in the USA. $849.00 iPhone 6+ 64GB, $99 Apple Care, $39 Apple Silicone Case, 9% Tax. Approx. $1075.00USD for all of it.

I am not keeping my iPhone 5, as it doesn't support LTE networks here in Brazil. I am not selling it either, as I will probably give it to my parents.

As for battery life of the iPhone 6, I heard that it is mediocre. I don't know how much truth there is in this, but this is a matter of concern to me, as I use the iPhone very intensely.

The iPhone 6 battery is far from being mediocre, it's mush better than the 5/5s battery. My wife use her iPhone 6 all day then at home in the evening and still have 19% battery before pluging and getting ready for bed. My 6+ the battery is insane, I can go for two days on a full battery before charging it. The 4/4s 5/5s is a joke comparing to the 6/6+ battery.

OP, I suggest you check out the Motorola and Sony phones. Motorola doesn't have a skin on their OS as far as I know, and if they do it's so close to stock Android you'd hardly notice. Ignore the Moto G though if your carrier has or plans to implement LTE anytime soon, as the G doesn't support LTE. The Sonys are also very nice but I believe they do have some manufacturer UI on their phones, not nearly as bad as Samsung though.

I think the iPhone and iOS are superior to most Android phones, but at those prices I don't think they're THAT superior.

I've read that the iPhone 6 battery is similar to the one in the iPhone 5s, perhaps slightly better, and that the iPhone 6 Plus has indeed a better battery life.

Well, if I buy an iPhone 6 Plus and all this stuff, the actual cost will be over US$ 2,000 here in Brazil. The silicon case alone costs US$ 70.

iPhones are stupidly expensive in the UK too. Around $800 USD for the 16gb iPhone 6.

But here the flagship android devices are the same. The iPhone 6 is £540, the nexus 6 is £500 the Galaxy S5 is around that price too. So all flagship phones run around the same price point.

The 128gb 6 plus is $1233 here. Which I find absolutely stupid for a phone. Who wants to pay almost £1000 for a phone?

So is the iPhone 6 worth double the price of the latest flagship android, as much as I love iPhones, no it isn't. I have no objection to paying a premium price for a product but it's absolutely not worth double the likes of the M8 or S5.

My 64GB 6+ with AppleCare+ and apple leather case and ZAGG HDX screen protector total $1000+ . My wife 64gb 6 with AppleCare+ ZAGG HDX screen protector, and case mate naked tough case total $900 so for both our phones total $2000. U say who want to pay almost a $1000 phone. Lots of people like my self have spend over a $1000 for a phone. A mean if u can afford it why not right? My wife and I use our phones for a lots of things so we need the extra storage. So paying more for the extra features is worth it for us.

I am planning to buy a new smartphone, probably as early as today. I currently have a 16 GB iPhone 5 and it is getting really slow, and battery life drains too fast. The one I intend to buy is a 64 GB iPhone 6. It has a great size and seems awesome, with the exception of battery life, which seems to be crappy.

The thing is, the iPhone 6 is insanely expensive here in Brazil. The minimum prices are as follows (these are not the prices suggested by Apple, which are even higher; these are the cheapest models I managed to find for each model):

• 16 GB iPhone 6: US$ 1100
• 64 GB iPhone 6: US$ 1250
• 128 GB iPhone 6: US$ 1400
• 16 GB iPhone 6 Plus: US$ 1250
• 64 GB iPhone 6 Plus: US$ 1400
• 128 GB iPhone 6 Plus: US$ 1700

The prices are very high because of the huge taxes charges by the government (the prices are a little lower than they used to be because the US dollar has gone up in the last few days). Anyway, the iPhone is the most expensive smartphone here. All Android phones are much less expensive.

Here is a list of the Android phones I managed to find:

• LG G3: US$ 570
• Samsung Galaxy Alpha
• Samsung Galaxy S5 (16 GB): US$ 690
• Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (32 GB): US$ 950
• Motorola Moto G: US$ 270
• Motorola Moto X: US$ 500
• Motorola Droid Turbo (64 GB) (called Moto Maxx here): US$ 770
• Sony Xperia Z3 Compact (16 GB): US$ 580
• Sony Xperia Z3 (16 GB): US$ 725

All of them, even the flagship Android phones, are much cheaper than the iPhone; and Windows phones follow the same pattern.

The thing is, I bought a Samsung Galaxy S4 last year to replace my iPhone 4s (about june 2013) and I just couldn't use it. It was awkaward to hold in one hand. It was uncomfortable to use. The user interface was terrible. The software available for Android was worse and less polished than the software available for iOS. The touch screen of the S4 was not so accurate as the one in the iPhone. Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S4 provided a sub-par experience compared to the iPhone; the experience was not half as polished. So, after two weeks, I gave the S4 to my mother (I cannot take the phone back to the store like in the U.S.; here, if I take it out of the store, it's mine forever). Then, I bought an iPhone 5, which is the one I want to replace now.

Now, it's time to replace my iPhone again and I am just wondering.

I look at several smartphones in the stores, and they all look great and nice, and are much cheaper than the iPhone. And they seem to provide a much better battery life than the iPhone, which is something critical (as I must carry chargers with me all day to provide extra battery). I used the Nexus 5 of a friend for a few minutes and it felt very good and polished and all; and it was way cheaper than an iPhone (the Nexus 5 is not available for sale anymore here in Brazil).

But, at the same time, I wonder whether I will feel the same lack of polish that I felt after using the S4 for a couple of weeks back in 2013. I know the Android phones must have improved, and that Android and software available to it must have improved as well. Or that there may be smartphones more comfortable to use than the S4. An Android phone is cheaper, but if the experience is crap again, then I will end up buying another iPhone anyway.

So, what would you recommend? Has Android phones improved a lot since last year? Given my experience, should I go with the iPhone 6 or should I try another Android phone?

It mostly depends on your and your set up. I have 2 Apple TVs, 2 macs and 3 iPads in my household. I can have my phone in my phone and be able to send texts and answer phone calls from my computer or iPad when my phone isn't near me. I have an Lightning port alarm clock that I set to turn on a podcast in the morning for me to wake up to. I wouldn't have any of these options if I have an Android phone, without rebuying a lot of stuff and for features like Airplay mirror I won't have at all. I picked up a Moto G to try out the other week and I have to say while it's a good phone. I much preferred using my iPhone 6 despite that it's a bit boring OS-wise, everything just works "smoother" for lack of a better term, while on Android all the features need a little figuring out to get working.

It also annoyed me that even though the Android L update was announced for the Moto G, not everyone got it... and this is WEEKS after the first reports of people having it. I like that when Apple sends out an update to a new OS EVERYONE with a compatible iPhone gets the update, not this weird disjointed update where only a handful gets the newest OS at a time even when they have the same phone.

If you paid $1035 then you bought the highest capacity version, which has always had the worst iPhone resale value relative to cost. It's nothing new and has always been that way. The $100 premium Apple charges for extra storage doesn't fly on the resale market. The 16GB version is always the most efficient version in terms of cost to resale value ratio. Example: I just sold 2 used AT&T iPhone 6 16GB phone only this month, no box for $540 and $600 respectively. That being said, where are you getting $430 from? ASP of a used 128GB 6 Plus is far higher than that right now on eBay. It's actually trending around $850-900.
