Add it all up, the iPhone 7 is a massive increase in cost for what looks like very little gain. Back to the thread title, it's why I won't transition to the new iPhone for the first time in a decade. If Apple wants to hurt me financially with the new-every-two model, that's fine, I can fight back by holding on to the older iPhone for another year or two, it functions very well thank you. It's gone from play money to real money now.
Yes the money is very real.

Setting aside the small details and differences, the closet comparison between handsets of different platforms is my iPhone 6S Plus vs my Nexus 6P. I wouldn't part with either.

Both are premium aluminum, nearly the same size, each is 64GB, 5.5" vs 5.7" displays, each are the finest in there respective families.

The Big Difference is in the Price!

$849 for my iPhone 6S Plus
$475 for my Nexus 6P

You've got to really want that fruity logo.

Ironically price aside, my absolute favorite in the whole wide world is the Nexus 6P... :D

I use my phone hard for business, however, I keep it looking new. My 6 has held up well. My wife barely uses her phone. I upgrade every two years and give her my previous phone to use. We keep each phone in operation for 4 years...not bad in my opinion. If the leaks are any indication, the phone will not be much different cosmetically than the current iteration. IMHO, I find this phone to be the "sexiest" looking since the original. It has the features I need, is reliable and enjoyable to use. I will upgrade this fall.

Someone who's actually posting a positive comment about the iPhone 7 :D in all seriousness tho, I agree with you. The design of the iPhone 6 was great, I won't have a problem with the 7 if they don't change the design, in fact from what I've read about the rumours, I think it will be a great upgrade for those of us who are still on the 6 or 6 Plus.

I reallly reallly really want to but I don't think I can justify the $.

In the past I had yearly upgrades and would get the newest iPhone but as much as I would love too I don't think I'm going to shell out the $500 for it.

All smartphones weigh on carriers' margins, since wireless carriers pay a hefty subsidy up front to buy the phones from the handset manufacturers. They make up the difference over the life of a two-year contract.

What is happening now is separation of hardware and service, which is good for customers.

No matter how you phrase it or play with the semantics from the carriers, the iPhone 7 will cost me $100s of dollars more over a two year period all-in than the iPhone 6 did. And it's because the subsidies have been discontinued and the carriers are looking to make back the money they lost on me since 2012.

I have a family plan. $10/month for 24months got me the $400 subsidy as well as a voice-only line. They raised the prices on me when they took away the option for 2-year contract subsidies.

Exactly. A little different for me as I'm grandfathered in on the Unlimited Dataplan, AT&T raised the cost of the data $5 and then will take an $800 iPhone 7 and add $33 a month as opposed to when it used to cost me $399. If you add up all I spent on my iPhone 6 for two years and compare it to what an ATT Next plan would be for the iPhone 7, I am spending more money and will see less ROI when I go to sell the iPhone 7 in two years time.
