I've stated it already in another thread, but I highly suspect that the 6+ is the reincarnation of the iPad 3. A brand new screen + battery to power it, running more or less the same internals as its more popular sibling, and priced at a premium as a big R&D effort to attract Android users who left for bigger screens.
If it sells well, it will quickly be replaced by a real phablet with the appropriate amount of RAM, better battery, etc.
Making this possibly the shortest lifecycle iPhone product built yet.
