Apple today updated its list of vintage and obsolete products to add the iPhone 6 Plus, as it has been more than five years since the device was last offered for sale.

a-iphone-6-plus-ad-vintage.jpg

The iPhone 6 Plus was first released in September 2014 alongside the iPhone 6, and it was discontinued in September 2016 following the launch of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The iPhone 6 Plus' sister phone, the iPhone 6, is not on the vintage list at this time as it was available for sale for a longer period of time.

Apple relaunched the iPhone 6 in 2017 as a midrange iPhone, and it was available for purchase until September 2018, so for that reason, it will be another two years or so before it is designated as a vintage product.

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were notable for being the first devices to offer support for Apple Pay and for marking the first year that Apple offered the iPhone in multiple size options. Apple has continued on with the multi-size release strategy since the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus launch.

The vintage products list features devices that Apple stopped distributing for sale more than five years ago and less than seven years ago. Apple provides service and parts for vintage devices for up to 7 years, or as required by law, but repairs are subject to parts availability.

Apple stopped supporting the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with software updates back in 2019 with the launch of iOS 13.

The 6 Plus was the worst iPhone I ever had. 1gb ram and 64 bit never should have happened. Crashy, constantly refreshing apps, played a podcast-paused-looked at Safari-pressed play again-music started playing as the podcast app was flushed. Terrible.

Although it never bent and I used it caseless like all my iPhones.

My first iPhone, the 3G, was pretty ropey in hindsight but I LOVED it at the time so it doesn’t qualify.

I have one still lying around. Battery is toast but still works fine with its puny 1gb RAM.

Rose Gold was introduced as an option a year later, with the 6s ;)

Had the 6, not 6 Plus, but remember the constant RAM management problems and the 8.0.1 updated that disabled the cellular reception :D
Thank you for the correction.

Oh yeah, I believe iPhone 6 exclusive color was gold following up with the iPhone 6S in Rose Gold. I'm pretty sure iPhone 6S is next to be added to the vintage product list.

I agree, I do remember the RAM management, issues with the battery life, and unresponsiveness. I think during that time Apple's main goal was to stop the bend gate.

iPhone 6 and 6 Plus remains the best selling iPhone series in Apple’s history for good reason.

From a usability standpoint, it was the first device with NFC and Touch ID, which meant the birth of Apple Pay. From a practical standpoint, people just wanted a big screen and battery. No, it didn’t have a lot of RAM, but it was still signicantly better than the iPhone 5.

Yeah, I remember my neighbor complaining about performance issues with her 6 Plus while the 6s I purchased a year later is still doing okay seven years after I bought it. 2GB of RAM made all the difference. I don’t use my 6s anymore, but I did compare it to my 12 Pro and it kept up surprisingly well for the most part, maybe not as fast, but in many instances, close enough.

Yeah, my sister in law still uses my 6S Plus, it’s fine, and was a huge improvement over the 6 Plus thanks to 2gb ram.

In my experience the 6 Plus was fine if you accepted you could only do ONE thing at a time. One tab in Safari OR listen to music OR listen to a podcast. The moment you tried to do these simultaneously, or dared to switch between apps, POOF! everything refreshed or crashed - I can’t remember the exact figures, but the move to 64bit meant 30% or so of the ram was needed for the OS to run, leaving precious little for anything else. It was the podcast-pause/resume-via-CC-and-music-played issue that drove me most crazy. (Can’t remember what CC was called in those days).

Around the same time, I used the much maligned iPad 3. Sure it was slow and heavy, but it was stable, had a glorious glass screen and it’s 1gb ram handled the above scenarios fine as it was still 32bit, using less ram for the OS. All those 6 Plus issues emerged with the plasticky screened iPad Air 1 also, I sold that after a few months and went without an iPad until the iPad Air 2 (which turned out to be an excellent, long lived iPad).

Edit: Oh yeah, another side effect of so little ram was if you were writing a post in Safari, or completing a form, if you dared leave Safari for a moment, your data was almost always flushed when you returned. You had to constantly c&p stuff before exiting Safari. Hyperbole, I think not lol!

I fondly remember the iPhone 6 Plus as one of the most solid phones ever made. It was the first "phablet" I ever had, and never had any bending or performance issues.

The only reason I ended up trading it in for a X when it came out was because I had made the foolish decision of getting the 16GB model and was constantly having to delete apps and data just to be able to use the phone; and even then I'd get notifications saying I was out of storage almost every day.

Terrific phone. I really appreciated the larger size and my six plus is still used everyday by my son. I changed to an 8 plus in feb 19. Never had any problems with the six plus in terms of Apps or crashing etc so am quite surprised by some of the “worst phone ever” hyperbole.
Me too. Got my 6+ when it was new, and replaced it with a second had 8+ only January 2021, 6+ years (pun intended) later. Loved it. RAM and speed became an issue only on its last couple of years.

It had its issues but it was my first iPhone and i have never looked back since then. Compared to the android ecosystem (i was using htc at the time), it was great. And using Apple Pay for the first time, so much fun. People’s reactions were great.

And yet I see so many around.
Considering how relatively old it is, it's surprising to still see it so much around.
However I expect everyone dropping it later this year as iOS 16 wil probably not work on it.
Still...quite a venerable phone.
Also the first BIG iPhone

This was actually my favorite keynote when Apple announced the 4.7 iPhone 6 and 6+. I was so excited, even though I ordered a little bit late, I didn’t even receive my phone for about 4 months. I remember unboxing the Plus model, and I was just amazed at the sheer size of it, but how substantial it felt in my hand with the 6000 series aluminum and rounded corners. I literally stared at it for about five minutes before I even powered it on.:D

Same.

It was a low for iPhones. Constantly crashing due to low RAM, randomly shutting off because of battery problems, then followed by secret CPU throttling. The bendgate...

Ever since the 6S I feel like iPhones got a lot more premium and had more longevity.
