True, but only if you buy it from Apple. If you buy it from T-Mobile it will be locked.

Yes, thanks for the clarification: I meant if you bought it from Apple.

The ones sold by the carriers will be locked, but if you pay full price for it you should be able to unlock it right away.

Now to debate the gamble of Best Buy pre-ordering so I can have it first thing in the morning on the 19th or just ordering at midnight with Apple...

If you're pre-ordering from best buy,I just got this email saying pre-orders IN STORE.

I cropped the email so you could see the important part.

T-Mobile makes you sign up for service and wait 40 days before they will unlock it. AT&T will unlock it right away if you send them a receipt showing that you paid full price for it, but technically their policy is that they will unlock it only if you are a customer, so if you are not I wouldn't chance it.

That would be new for this year. In previous years, that hasn't been the case.

We'll have to see. More reason for me not to order on day one.

I'm lucky in that I'm not in dire straits to order like I was for the iPhone 5. My iPhone 4 had a flakey power button so I was desperate to upgrade. This time I'm not.

In the past, has it been possible (on AT&T) to order via apple.com and select Unlimited Data? I've read that the order page on apple.com doesn't list that as an option (even if you currently have it).

Can anyone confirm / deny?

It didn't work for me with the 5, but I called AT&T a few days later and asked if they could grandfather my unlimited plan into the new phone and they were able to do it right away.

You probably won't be able to pre-order without a card tied to a US address. That's to prevent fraud. However, your best bet is to try your luck at an Apple Store next weekend. They get shipments throughout the weekend. I got lucky 2 years ago and showed up 5 minutes before a shipment arrived. There was no line. Last year there appeared to be more phones available as there were no presales. You can get the Verizon, T-Mobile, or AT&T version from Apple. If you pay full price it will be unlocked out of box. You don't need to anything to unlock it. If a Verizon store will sell you one for full price it will also be unlocked.

Thank you! I will do my best to try tonight at 12.01, I did order an iPad to my friends flat a few months ago with my UK credit card and it worked. If that does work, I will have it the 19th and hopefully its already unlocked. Or i will just walk down to an Apple Store. Or I will just wake up on the 20th and go to Apple Store SOHO or Grand central.

WTF ** how can you put pre-order out with 2 different sizes and have NONE at the store for customers to test out until the release date.

this isn't revolutionary, it's stupid!!!

It's only "stupid" to pre order If you dont know what you want. Most people pre-ordering have access to rulers & figured out what they need so test models are not required for us. We just want our phone ASAP and without waiting in line.

If you need to eyeball both side by side then pre-ordering isn't for you. Just hold off until next weekend. No big.

Any idea when the iPhone will be available for pre-order in the UK? At 12:01 or 8am like it usually is?

Yes, the decision whether to go for the Plus is a tricky one! About the saddest thing I've ever done in my life with regards to tech, but this morning I rode into work with this in my pocket to get a 'feel' for life with a phablet

I did exactly the same thing with cardboard! I came to the conclusion it wasn't as bad as i thought it would be...

----------

That's huge! I'm probably going with the 6

It looks huge on that photo, but i did the same thing with cardboard and even got the depth right and it really isn't as big in the hand as it seems on that photo!

Um, if only the thickness was not 10x the actual device, you might have had something there.

I am going to be pre-ordering online for the first time, going with Verizon Edge so I have to do it on Verizon's site and not Apple's. That's okay with me, hoping that maybe Verizon won't be quite as stressed with people ordering as Apple!

When I went from the 3GS to the 4, I pre-ordered from Best Buy and it was an absolute nightmare! We pre-ordered out phones on the first day you could but when they received phones in store, some were reserved for pre-orders and some for walk in customers. It was almost 2 weeks until we had our phones and I was furious. I am hoping that my experience ordering online will be vastly different.

In the meantime, is it 3 am yet? Can't believe I am going to get up at ~2:45 to do this, then hopefully go back to sleep for at least a few hours before going to work. I guess that's still better than camping outside in a line! :apple:

5c is so expensive? I thought it was now free.

Could have been a typo but not everyone buys their phones on subsidized plans, they may be referring to the full price.

And the "new" 5C will only have 8GB of memory, so yes, even free it's too expensive.

Who is the postie for Apple store online orders in the UK? It's been 2 years since I got my Air that way (I've forgotten)...

If anyone says yodel, I'm running for the hills lol.

As ever, the upgrade options you have in the US bamboozle me. I believe EE, Voda and Three are offering pre-orders but I've not found sight of any pricing..

Suspect if I do make up my mind it'll be another unlocked one from the Apple store. Marginally cheaper over two years and fairly hassle free.

The keynote was to stress test the servers.... now they know to improve them :p

The Keynote challenges where not capacity related. They'd not fully tested their live blog software, specific to the twitter feed. It's been covered in a couple of different places.

Interesting, as it was midnight (local time) for UK preorders in the past.

Well, it's 06.10 Friday morning in Sydney and it's still not available for pre-order. I'm going to guess that it's not going to be midnight UK time if it's not midnight Sydney time.
