This is the way to go. Thanks Apple!

I'd rather have really good 8MP pics than mediocre 40+ MP pics.

I agree . . . . although the only 40 MP cell phone camera I know of destroys the iPhone in picture taking. Add to that the ability to crop and some good photo software and it's a done deal.

Yes.. 4S = 8 MP. iPhone 5 = 8 MP with some "enhancements". iPhone 5S = 8MP with some "enhancements".

iPhone 6 = 8MP with "enhancements"??

I know megapixels aren't everything, but good luck telling the masses that the camera is really improving if you try that again.

I agree. It's not like the camera on the iPhone is terrible or has any major problems either. These "enhancements" seem to be addressing problems no one has.

Myth.

More megapixels don't help with "zoom" if the lens is too small, or the exposure is too long (which more pixels may require). You just end up with millions of pixels containing mostly the same blurry stuff as their neighboring pixels.

Then Samsung nailed it on the S4. That thing took the clearest pictures I've ever seen from a smartphone (Nokia Lumia devices excluded as I've never owned one).

I'm very glad to hear this. I've been saying since the 3Gs that I hope they don't compromise image quality for the sake of resolution.

Isn't optical image stabilization new to iPhones? Haven't we been limited to digital stabilization?

All apple needs to add to its camera is optical stabilization and a larger sensor. That is all. 5s has a great camera, the only problem is its clunky software and that STUPID switching between camera and photos. HTC solved this easily by adding both buttons (camera and video) one next to the other and no need to switch between camera modes.

People that bang on about having more MegaPixels generally don't know what they are talking about.

8mp 3264 x 2448 10.88" x 8.16" 27.64 x 20.73

It will print at 300Dpi on A4 or USA letter - who does that?

iPhone 5s - 8mpix - 2.3MB per image on average.

S4 - 12 mpix - 3.7MB per image on average.

lumia 1020 - 41mpix - 36-40MB an image!!!!!!!

and consistently the iPhone 5s has the better images on screen or normal print...

what actually matters is Sensor pixel size ( which got bigger in 5s ) speed and processing. And most importantly, the lens array.

That is a lot of great information. In the big picture does ANY of it actually matter? By big picture I mean the mass market. Tech enthusiast and photographers care, but like many have said, the vast majority of the iPhone pics end up on FB or Instagram.

If this rumor is true, I happen to agree with the stance of improve the picture and ignore the megapixel wars. Just because I agree doesn't make it a good marketing decision. The masses like big numbers. That's why we have bogus marketing terms like 4G, 4K, and Retina. They really don't mean anything but they sound good. To a layman 8mp sounds good, 16mp sound better, and 40mp sounds like nirvana. Does it really make a difference? If I am Joe Average, no it doesn't. If I am Tom Techy or Susan Shutterbug it might. If I am Apple I stay the course. Incremental improvements to one of the best phone cameras is satisfactory. I think the only business advantage to upping the megapixels is marketing.

Seriously? >.< I know you can keep a camera really good without increased mexapixels, but it's been 8 for a bit way too long. I mean, at least 10mp or 12mp, right?

I am not going to believe this one?

Correct me if I am wrong but don't you need more than 8mp to have 4K camera? I'm all for higher quality pixels but a one last bump to 12mp wouldn't be so bad.

There won't be a high end Android phone without a 4K camera this year. There are already a handful that has this feature. Also, it's hard to say 4K is a gimmicky feature when 4K TVs are starting to roll out and there are 4K TVs just announced for under $1,000. It would be nice to enjoy personal 4K videos shot with my new iPhone 6 next september :D.

Would it be possible to have a 4k camera in an iPhone at this point?

You don't understand the fact that megapixels larger than 8 really don't matter when it comes to camera phones. You want more megapixels but you don't even know why? More megapixels means larger picture files and less space on your phone.

Be careful what you ask for. Because what you will get is a video with massive amounts of data. Compression anyone?

Lol at you apple kool-aid drinkers:

Apple says they stick to 8MP you apple juice sippers say YES! Way to go apple that's brilliant. When the industry moves forward. Then when apple finally releases a 13MP camera in the iphone 10, you guys say that's right! 13MP is the sweet spot!

Repeat, rinse, and you have the exact recipe for apple apologists.

Go try 4K video on a note 3. Even the slow motion has 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 speed settings. Even their basic 1080p offers more bitrate than any iphone 5S camera. Just because apple doesn't use 13MP camera and the other guys do, it automatically means they are all crap while your 8MP is superior.

Sheeps!

If this is true, which I don't give a rats about anyway, you know the Android fanboys are going to be rubbing themselves in Jergens in their mom's basement and hitting all the Apple websites talking about how Android is better.

optical zoom - camera on top

I'm sure designers at Apple thought of this, but it is worth mentioning here.

To potentially solve the optical zoom problem, place the camera on the top. Lens apparatus is no longer constraint by the thinness of the phone. Taking picture wouldn't necessary be more difficult, and it may even be easier. iPhone thickness is probably as thin as it will be, and lens may have to change shape to accommodate. It may have to be rectangle.

ahh, I don't know. maybe I'm farting out of you know what.

Cinch

Basically every iteration of the iPhone sported a better camera than the previous model.

The question is how long before they're being used to film most motion pictures. These smart phone cameras are starting to be that good.

So would that mean regular 1080p encoded with h.265 would be half the size of today's h.264?

I'm all for that!

Yes indeedy :)

h.265 files are around 55% the size of their h.264 counterpart, so a 100MB h.264 video would be 55MB if encoded in h.265 with no difference in the quality.

Can't wait for it to roll out and become standard - so much bandwidth and space in general will be saved because of it.

that may be true, but the iPhone no longer has the best camera (not by a long shot) and 8 megapixel are a joke compared to what Nokia, LG and Sony are producing. And yes, it's not just the sensor, but all of these manufacturers manage to produce excellent cameras with much higher resolution.

welll apple manages to sell a 4" phone in a world of 5" phones...
I trust their marketing skills
and i also do not want 16mp photos taking up my storage when really, 8mp or even 5mp are just fine...

never.
phone cameras are made with a design limitation - size.
the strides that you see are being made in phone cameras are also being made in standalone cameras, without that limitation being an issue.
