As for video quality, the Nexus 7 uses the whole screen while the iPad Air has black bars on top and bottom taking up space....now that's lame.

You're refering to letterboxing, The nexus has an aspect ratio of 8:5 landscape, iPad, 4:3.

TV shows are typically produced in either 16:9 or 4:3. & Movies ~1.85:1.

In order to preserve the filmmaker's intent, letter boxing (those black bars), otherwise, the film would be distorted to fill the screen, either by lopping off the left & right edges of the frame, or streching the whole thing vertically.

Judging from the photos; the iPhone 6 4.7" is not that much better then the existing 4". I may end up purchasing the 5.5"! I guess I can carry it around in my hand all the time! Got to get some type of security that can secure it to my hand so some body does not try to grab and run with it! I love to get a taser accessory that if it leaves my gripe; it will activate or arm the taser function with a 5 second delay. That would be shocking! LOL!

Also, I hope the 5.5" is priced lower then the 4.7" model; just to throw a twist for the consumer. Apple should just start again with two colors: White and Black. Save the Champagne for next year or two. I like the Black myself but if they are out of stock I be willing to take a White one! 128GB, 4GB RAM and A8 CPU is going great! 64bit iOS finally!

I'm going to laugh at people with an iPad mini and a 5.5 inch iPhone

Hell, even a 4.7 inch iPhone and iPad mini is laughable

I just hope that Apple doesn't do away with their 4" screens. How do you guys feel about the path Apple will take in regard to screen size. When the iPhone 7 and 8 are released, will a 4" phone be sold by Apple? Should be interesting.

I would prefer a 5" iPhone. Some people want a 4" iPhone. What I don't understand are the folks that are saying that a 5.5" iPhone is a crazy idea, when tens of millions of these larger screen phones are sold each year.

Apple needs to have a 4", 4.7" and a 5.5" iPhone line-up. Why not let the consumer choose?

I'd bet my life a 4.7" phone outsells a new, equally equipped 4" iPhone. That's not to say a 4" phone will not continue to sell well. But, the fact is, there are tens of millions of consumers out there that buy a non-Apple phone due to the iPhone's smaller screen size. I've seen it with my own eyes, 20 plus times, in an ATT store. Each and every time the choice is made on screen size. "Well, I really like the iPhone,BUT I'm gonna go with the Samsung with the bigger screen."

I think that Apple would command 75%+ of the US smartphone market if they released 3 or 4 different screen sizes. It's frustrating as a shareholder. Hopefully things will change in the next year or two.

----------

I'd really prefer 5" with a reduced bezel. But you can't win them all. I think having a 4" and 5" lineup would be perfect and simple.

If Apple's smallest phone ends up being 4.7" then watch all the Android makers start doing 3.5-4" screens to fill that market. Unfortunately that's a market that exists for women like my wife who have small pockets and miss even their 3.5" iPhone. She has tolerated the 4" screen but about freaked out when I told her they're going to increase the dimensions again.

Apple will always have a 4" to 4.5" screen available for the foreseeable future.....I hope.

You are right not everyone has the need of a bigger screen phone. However there are many phone users that do. Apple would be insane not to make a larger screen phone at this point.

Don't forget apple fanatics were going cray cray when iphone went to 4 inches they argument was 3.5 was perfect. Now they are saying 4 is perfect. Mark my words this time next year everyone will be like 4.7 is the perfect screen size.

Feature rich? Really? Don't get me wrong ios is a beautifully crafted OS. However i can do more with my galaxy s4 than I could ever do with an iphone.

And samsung aren't the only ones making bigger screened phones. Every major smartphone makes bugger screened phones. The new htc one is a sexy as hell. It's 5 inches. If there was no market for bigger screen phones they would stop making them.
If Apple was to unveil the iPhone 6 with a 4" screen, their stock would plummet 15% within a minute. Further, if they release just a 4.7" screen, I think the stock will fall. I'm hoping for a 4.5" and 5" iPhone, for personal reasons and for my aapl share's sake.

This what people don't get. 4" screens are not good enough for consumers anymore. Consumers want choice. They want bigger screen phones. These apple loyalist are living in a bubble. Apple is very late to the game with screen size. 5S should have had another screen size option. For a lot of people the screen size is the only thing holding them back and apple knows this.

All these people saying "you're holding an ipad to your face" and "anything over 4" is way too massive" simply have not had the opportunity to use a larger device for an extended period of time. And I do not mean 30 minutes. Use one for a week or two. Then once you get used to it, switch back to the 4" screen. I'm sure you'll manage but afterwards you'll always be wishing you had that comfortable screen estate.

I’m hoping the rumors of a larger I phone are just that, rumors. I would prefer they return back to the original size.

I bet that those ridiculous Samsung things only get repeat business and referals from people that think Android is a particularly brilliant and intuitive user interface..

Erm... It is a brilliant and intuitive user experience... And.if folk are doing repeat business they are obviously happy with the product..

What's your point again..?.

Too bad apple never thought up a new style pocket computer that made phone calls with a responsive touchscreen first.

Man alive, I thought we'd all moved on from blindly thinking Apple invented everything. When we know they copy/steal/patent/buy other firms ideas...and roll it in a bit of glitter.... Please let's not talk about this again....

I've lived with an HTC One something or other with Monster Beats for about a 1.5 yrs. It sucked.

Furthermore, the 71:40 aspect ratio of the current 4" iPhone 5 pushes the bounds good taste in portrait.

Widening it would improve the aspect ratio, but make it unpleasant to grasp. The design of these things is inherently constrained.

I went from an iPhone 4S to a samsung note 2 . it is awesome to have such an easy to read and use screen instead of squinting and trying to tap each letter individually(especially those with big thumbs)

I am waiting to see what Apple comes up with for the large screen lovers,

Oh and it fits fine in all my jeans

You're right about the really tall part. Anyone that familiar with the great debate over beer bottle form factors, will know that stubbies no longer exist for a reason, consumers just prefer to handle longnecks.

However, because a phone is something that people not only handle, they also look at it, the aspect ratios have to be useful in both landscape and portrait.

Think in terms of paper, when was the last time you saw something written on legal (8.5 * 14) pages; not often, Letter paper (8.5 * 11) is just more appealing.

The market for XL smartphones is not the mass market.

All the time, my wife is a lawyer! lol

I'm leaning towards a 4.7 myself, IF Apple releases it. I'm on a 4S, and it is too small. Just helped my dear mother set up her new 5S, and it still feels a bit small to me.

Those Android owners will have to continue tolerating that OS if they want obscenely big screens I'm afraid. Apple never compromises on experience.

If you step out from behind Apples walled off garden, the facts will be revealed.

More and more new articles are filling the blogosphere with glowing reviews acknowledging the great progress of Android's Kit Kat OS. Many proclaim its providing more functionality, and a superior experience over iOS.

I know that's certainly been my personal first hand experience. My Nexus 5 running Android 4.4 is faster, more stable and reliable than my current iPhone 5S. The N5 is both fun to use and significantly more functional.

The icing on the cake is how nicely it integrates with my Apple ecosystem.

I still don't like Android, even with Kit Kat. The Android OS has come a great distance though... and it is definitely way faster than it's ever been in its current form. It still does nothing for me, though. If I had to get one, I would probably also get a Nexus 5 for the support. It also looks pretty sleek as well.

The oversized smartphone wars is getting ridiculous

Apple shouldn't be competing with the largest smart phones. It should be marketing how ridiculous the size of Samsung Galaxy phones is.

Part of Apple's success is based on compactness and elegance in design - both personal devices and computers.

There is already a voip phone made by Apple that competes with the size of a Samsung Galaxy. It's called an iPad mini.

Clinging to the small screen, one handed usage model from Apples past is a compromise at best. And yet it's beginning to appear as though nothing will help Apple recover from the loss of Steve Jobs. Initially I thought Apple would continue to innovate, but now two years later they've got nothing to show.

Luckily for them the strong enduring cult like following and immense hype cloud Jobs built around the company is bound to carry them for quite some time.

As that begins to fade and Apples star dims, their future will relegate them to an also ran company.

Come back to it this time next year.

Eat crow.

I originally bought a 5s, but I just wanted something bigger. I have a nexus 5 now and it is fine for the most part. I really enjoy the 5" screen, the wireless charging, and overall android works well.

With that being said, if apple launches a 5" iPhone this year I will buy it and never look back. To me the iPhone would make more sense with a 4" and 5" option than a 4.7" and 5.5". If it is 4.7" this year I will have to see it in person to see if it wins me over, but it would probably still be big enough to get me back.

I'm just saying those who switched to Android and claim they will only come back to iOS if Apple launches a 5inch+ monstrosity should get used to their Android experiences. They won't be coming back to iOS. Apple won't be launching a phablet device.

Android is okay. But it's nowhere near as polished as iOS. There are still performance issues, apps are rarely optimised for the hardware, so you need huge specs under the hood to power these devices properly. Even then an Android phone with twice the horsepower of an iPhone still runs subpar compared to the buttery smooth iOS experience.

But my point really isn't to slate Android here. It's to say those who are holding out for an obscenely large iPhone will be disappointed later in the year. They'll have to continue with Android if a super-sized smartphone is a deal breaker for them.

if you are going to pick a specific handset to use as an example of 'it sucked" mainly to feel more loved by your fellow ibrothers, this is not the one to use... the ammount of handset of the year awards it won round the world suggests that a), it doesnt suck, and b) your bias is so strong you cant escape the hype cloud of ijobs..

I thought by default we are on a September release now? It will be interesting to see what they do about the 5C and 5S if they are going to release 2 model IP6's a 4.7 and 5.5?

I am more interested to see what features of iOS 8 will be in the OS and what new features on the phones, more so then size.
