I'd really prefer 5" with a reduced bezel. But you can't win them all. I think having a 4" and 5" lineup would be perfect and simple.

If Apple's smallest phone ends up being 4.7" then watch all the Android makers start doing 3.5-4" screens to fill that market. Unfortunately that's a market that exists for women like my wife who have small pockets and miss even their 3.5" iPhone. She has tolerated the 4" screen but about freaked out when I told her they're going to increase the dimensions again.

I can't tell if you were being sarcastic but gadgets should fit into your pocket, not the other way around.

There was a little sarcasm there and a lot of humor. That was funny. To his point, those who say they have trouble fitting a 4" phone in a pocket are wearing pants with exceedingly small pockets. 5" phones fit in normal jeans easily. They fit in slacks easily. All that is said from a male perspective. Women may be different... and guys wearing skinny jeans. Which they really shouldn't. EVER

You never know but I think there is a much higher chance of seeing Apple go with a 4.0 and a 4.7 than with a 4.7 and a 5.5.

I'm a bigger guy with big hands and I think even the 4.7 is probably bigger than what I would want. I'm not exactly sure what my ideal size would be, but I use the 4 inch iPhone 5 very comfortably. I've also used the 5 inch Nexus 5 often and I found it to be too large for my taste. It was mostly used in the car trying to shuffle through music. My best guess is that I would prefer something around 4.3 inches so I may have to make a decision if Apple comes with a 4.0 and a 4.7.
Bigger guy with big hands and you think the Nexus 5 is too big? El Oh El.

Announcement 1: Retina
The pixel density is so great that the human eye can't discern the pixels.

Announcement 2: Retina +
Yes I know last time we said we reached the maximum density the human eye will EVER require. But people love bigger numbers. So announcing Retina + , you won't be able to see the difference but by god the meaningless number will be higher than the competition.

What I really meant was adjusting color saturation and having deeper blacks . There's a lot of things that can be done to a display other than just a higher PPI .

5.5" phones have been around for a while now, and I still think they're utterly ridiculous.

There will always be people who find them ridiculous. Someone once told me he thought people using iPhones looked as though they were stroking the bellies of hamsters. I found the image he invoked to be funny and accurate, but it didn't sour me on the iPhone.

If I buy a large screened iPhone, it will be because it suits me, and your opinion won't affect my decision in any way.

A larger iPhone doesn't appeal to me, but I may be in the minority.

I like a phone that fits in my pocket, but I can see the appeal to those who want one device that does it all, and is used as much a computer as a phone.

Does anyone think there is a market for a combo iPad/iPhone? How big is too big?

I believe a market does exist for an apple "phablet." I often wish my iPad could make phone calls. During my work day I use an iPad all day long to read emails, send iMessages, look at presentations/docs, and browse the web. Sitting next to me is my iPhone with my headset attending conference calls. If I could combine the two, it would be perfect.

However, that device would only useful in my work setting. After hours in restaurants, bars, and on the go use, I would like 5-5.5 inch phone.

Two things I would like apple to do in future devices..

1. Integrate iMessage with SMS for Apple users so all messages can reach multiple devices.

2. Allow the iPad to make phone calls. Or somehow route my iPhone calls to my iPad during business hours

Just my thoughts and wishes.

Anyone else doubt they will do a 5.5" model? I figured they would save that for an iPhone 6.

I hope they do, but I'm skeptical.

4.7"? 5.5"? Pfft, too small.

Come on Apple, put a phone in the iPad mini, then I'll bite. ;)

I don't think you realize just how big an iPad mini really is!

:D

Even 5.5in may well seem pathetically small by September. I bet Samsung are already working on 6in+ phones. Its a screen-size arms race and Tim Cook knows that Apple need to catch up!

In fact, analysts predict that by 2016, ~80% of smartphone screens will possibly be bigger than the iPad is today.

Catch up? To what? 300 phone styles a year? That always works well. Too bad apple never thought up a new style pocket computer that made phone calls with a responsive touchscreen first. Stick that in your pocket. I'm sure it's technically very difficult to make a large phone out of plastic.

4.7"= New iPhone

5.5"= New iTouch (aimed at gamers)

i like that idea. sometimes i would like to have a larger phone, but not phablet size :)

if they really go for a 5.5 touch - they can check how much they sold and update the 5.5 phone later …
- on the other side, if they introduce a 5.5 touch only... why not a phone at the same time... (?) (i am just thinking loud:)

how they handle the larger screens - would be great to avoid these android size-mess-crap-clustered-xxxyzdpi issues …

we will see - 4,7 for me :)

I predict a 4.5-4.6" ish screen. Anything larger, not so much. I would be very surprised, shocked, if apple actually came out with a phablet.

The funny thing about this thread, and all the ones before it around this issue, is that people are arguing over having a choice. Why would you want to let a corporation decide for you what's best? (…).

right and wrong (my opinion)
- it is the company to decide wich products they offer
- it is the customer to decide what to buy

did e.g. Porsche produce any kind of trucks?
(don't mean those SUVs:D

sometimes the current 5s seems little to small for my needs, but on the other side iOS is quite fine for me (so it is not only the size what matters - its a summ of different parts...)

…

For some reason I was hoping to see it out by the summer. I guess the good news is I can compare the iPhone 6 with the Note 4 which is due out in the fall as well.

128Gb AND get rid of the built in crap apps no one wants/uses.
Will defo get the 4.7" IF in fact they bring one out.

Consumer demand for bigger screens. If thats what the customer wants then Apple have to provide otherwise they'll lose sales to competitors. Seems Apple is getting in on the big screen fad.

I can't understand the need for a huge screen - but still - it seems consumers love big screens on phones. I'd rather have something very portable than a huge phone.

Apple may as well just put voice capabilities on the iPad mini and be done with it!! Sadly.

I just can't believe that Apple would split off its product line with so many sizes like this. The era of Jobs 2.0 (after he returned to the company) was all about streamlining -- taking a massive inventory of overlapping products (Performa, Quadra, AV, Lipschitz, etc.) and cutting it down to TWO product categories: Consumer and Pro. All the laptops and desktops swiftly fell into order and that delineation continued up until the introduction of the iPod (and even then we have the cheaper options and the big ticket options).

The iPhone line has been separate from this categorization until recently, when the iPad line was divided into the Mini and the Air, with speculation that a "Pro" was around the corner. Apple had previously denied that they wanted to do a Mini, but competition clearly forced their hand and they (rightly) made a pivot. But does anyone really think they want to muddy up the iPhone line with TWO additional sizes? Are they going to shift from their streamlined approach now?

Unlike the iPad or a Macbook, there's no compelling need for a "Pro" phone. It starts to overlap the product lines again -- wouldn't a large, Phablet-sized iPhone be too similar to an iPad Mini? Why bother at all??

Ugh. The 4" Screen on the 5 already sticks out of my pocket. The phone doesn't need to be any bigger. Everyone with big phones already looks like a ridiculous 80's banker, it doesn't need to get any worse.

I agree, though there is something to be said for the current design's rather big bezel on both top and bottom. If they can increase screen size within the same form factor, I'm all in.

But even with smaller bezels, it looks like a 4,7" screen would just be too big for me.

Supply/Demand

If the 5.5" iPhone comes out, it will be the hardest phone to get in Apples iPhone history.

I'd really prefer 5" with a reduced bezel. But you can't win them all. I think having a 4" and 5" lineup would be perfect and simple.

Unfortunately that's a market that exists for women like my wife who have small pockets and miss even their 3.5" iPhone. She has tolerated the 4" screen but about freaked out when I told her they're going to increase the dimensions again.

Well if they use all the bezel and only increase it a little or non at all they would be appealing to both markets, no?

Reduce the mini's much large bezel and it isn't that much larger.
