Hello everyone,

So I’m thinking it’s time for an upgrade! I’ve been using my 6 for almost 4 years and it has been a great phone! The battery isn’t the same anymore and it lags/freezes often now. I’m ready for something bigger!

I’m stuck between the iPhone 8 Plus and the new iPhone X. Ideally in my new phone, I want a bigger screen, better battery life, and great cameras. I always use my iPhone for my camera while traveling because it’s easier than carrying around a huge DSLR.

First and foremost...is it worth the upgrade to go from an iPhone 6 to an iPhone 8 Plus?

If you’re going from a 6 non Plus to an 8 Plus you might not like it. But going to the X you might like it.

I upgraded from an iPhone 6+ to an 8+. I was happy with the upgrade. I will wait until next year for the X (iUP). The wireless charging, and the new battery is definitely worth it.

How so? I don’t know if I like the idea of losing the quickness of the home button. And my personal opinion, the notch on the X looks strange and unnatural.

It was for me. I went from a 6 to an 8+ (through a Sprint upgrade program) and am very happy that I did. Battery life is at least twice what I was getting on the 6. Better camera, more storage, much quicker.

For me, the 8+ fits my hand much better than the 6 did; more comfortable and natural feeling for me.

Very glad I made the move and I have no regrets at all.

You mean you have been using your iPhone 6 for 3 years, because it is released in late 2014?

Anyway, I changed from 6 to 8 Plus myself, so far I am very happy with it (except the occasional annoying crackling noise from the external speaker). I think changing to either 8 Plus or X is fine. The pro with X is you can get bigger OLED screen in a similar overall phone size as the 6. The pro with 8 Plus is it is cheaper than X.

Is the speaker crackling a common issue with the 8 Plus? That’s another thing...I like to play my music out loud so the steoreo speakers will be an awesome updated!

How much bulk will a case add? I hope to still fit the Plus in my pocket with one. I’d like to get the Otterbox Commuter. The 3 years I had my iPhone 6, that case was always superb for me! Nice grip and protection.

Both the 8+ and the X will give you the bigger screen, better battery life and superior camera.
It would be best to compare both in a store if you can. Obvious differences are the size, how it sits in your hand, the unlocking method, the price, and screen type (and shape), and the bezels. Less obvious is the fact that that both camera lenses have optical image stabilisation on the X, whereas only one has OIS on the 8+.
I was tempted by the X, but when I handled it I realised I actually like a bit of bezel - I find I can get a better grip on the phone when I'm interacting with the screen, and for me, although the OLED screen does look gorgeous, the shape is weird and the colour variance when viewed at an angle negates how good it looks head on.
I do have big hands, so I found the 8+ much more comfortable.
I think you'd see either phone as a substantial upgrade, but I would hesitate to give you an absolute recommendation as I think it is really important to try both in your hands and see which one feels right.

6 to 8 Plus was the transition I made.

No regrets! I loved my 6 but love the 8 Plus more. I anticipate it serving me well for years to come.

Made that change via the iPhone X and love the plus. You get used to the size pretty quickly.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I did play around with both in the store and I did think that the X was strangely “thin” (if that’s the word) screen-width wise compared to the Plus. Ultimately, the Plus has better battery life over the X correct?

Why did you change from the X?

Still using the iphone 6s, it is a super great phone. If you upgrade to 8, please tell us how it is.

I got the 8+, then returned it to get the X.

Not having a home button is really nice — the gestures on the phone are fast and intuitive. The notch disappears when you use the phone for more than a day.

I have the x and the battery life is honestly pretty amazing. Lasts all day and then some. Not dogging the 8 plus but I just think the design is kinda dated. Since it’s basically the same design as the 6-8. But for if your gonna get the phone on installments you might as well get the x since it’s only like $3-$4 a month more. Just my opinion tho.

Quickness of the home button? Swiping up is way faster. I find myself having a hard time and pushing in the old style button on my moms iPhone 8. Love the X!

I'm also still using my launch day iPhone 6. And it's still a good phone, albeit it does show it's age from time to time running iOS11.

I am leaning towards getting the iPhone 8+ myself. Or simply waiting another year to see if Apple will come out with a bigger screened X. In the meantime, will see if Sprint at some point gives me a good deal on the iPhone 8+ at some point.

Otherwise, will probably keep using my iPhone 6 for awhile longer. Good luck with your search, OP.

The iPhone 8 Plus would be a direct advantage in every aspect over your iPhone 6. There are so many different upgraded features, I wouldn't be able to even list them all. However, what your essentially receiving in the major factors is a much better display with 1080 P, larger battery, three GB of RAM over one GB of RAM you currently have, water resistance, and The dual camera is fantastic. I personally don't believe there is no way you could be dissatisfied with the upgrade you're considering to the iPhone 8.

Wasn’t worth the money IMO.

The 8 is the culmination of a perfected device IMO. Rock solid in every way.

I made the same jump from my iphone 6 (had terrible battery life towards the end and needed to get it replaced just to make it till the new release) to an iphone 8+ and haven't look back since.

For me the phone was never "large" and I don't consider myself to have large hands, but it did make me realize how much smaller my previous phone was.

The two drawbacks I faced was the lack of headphone jack (I know it's not coming back, but still.)
and the weight. Not so much in my hand but in my pocket, specifically with basketball shorts/loose shorts. I could feel my shorts slightly drop when walking around. Not sure if it's because it's a plus phone or if it's due to the new (or old?) glass back.

TBH the iphone X looked to gimmiky for me to shell out the extra $ and I didn't want to play guinea pig with a the new phone design. In the future I could see myself getting one, but not now though. I'll wait for the refined versions.

Thanks everyone! I think I’m going to buy the 8 Plus tonight at Best Buy. They are having a sale 100 off the phone with eligible upgrade and I have 210 in store credit to use on top of that even, so I’d be saving good money!

I research the X more and I just don’t see myself liking it...too many drawbacks in my opinion...especially because the notch gets in the way scrolling safari and watching movies. The screen size gets compressed and smaller just like my current 6 when viewing videos? What’s the point of that? I’m excited to get the 8 Plus!

Hello everyone,

YMMV. Opinions obviously differ. I upgraded from 6 to 7+. Since form factor was same between 6 and 7, I wanted something a little different. And the camera on the + is better.

I was no longer able to carry the phone in my shirt pocket like I was used to. So started to carry on belt clip. Went through several clips when broke catching on car door jamb. So I broke precedence and upgraded in only 14 months to the X.

I don't watch videos on the phone, so the notch hasn't affected me. I have my iPad Mini if I decide I want to watch a video.
