Reviewers keep mentioning that Siri is always on always listening on the new iPhone 6s phones. Does anyone know if this can be turned off?

This is so wrong, this means apps can just about do anything with the feed they are constantly getting from Siri.
What's happened to privacy?

It's basically spyware.

It's basically spyware.

Well, it's also anonymous data...and it's also processing the "Hey Siri" command locally and doesn't actually start connection with the Siri servers until after the phrase has been recognized, AND it can be disabled...

so...

it's just as secure as it was with iOS 8 and 7 and 6 and 5...

The data is also constantly overwritten.

Don't think it's actually going anywhere until Siri activates (via "Hey Siri" or manually).

It's a cloud first and mobile first world, and somehow I feel more comfortable with Apple doing this than Google or Microsoft. The other two companies are shamelessly data mining and doing targeted advertising, especially Microsoft after Nadella became the CEO.

Windows 10 is a privacy nightmare.

Once you've given Apple your thumbprint, this should be the least of your worries.

Stop spreading FUD. All fingerprint data is stored locally on the device, Apple or non-Apple phones.

Besides, where I live we already have National ID cards and biometric passports. Quite hard to live off the grid now.

Isn't it "always listening" only when plugged to a power source?

That was for existing iPhones. The 6S has an always listening capability.

I wouldn't be too concerned about privacy in this case. There is likely a low power companion chip or low power sector of the A9 that handles the always listening. For most other companies (i.e. Motorola) who have this feature that chip or module simply checks what its hearing against what its supposed to be listening for. If the two match it activates the voice commands otherwise it does nothing. Nothing is recorded or transmitted until that phrase is heard. We'll have to wait for tear downs or more detailed reviews like on Anandtech to be sure though.

Location Services is always listening too.

But that can be turned off as well.

People want technology for the ease of doing things that it brings to them, but they don't want to surrender any privacy - or the perception that they are surrendering privacy.

Not possible in a connected world unless you disconnect entirely from technology.

I feel like it shouldn't matter too much. No one listening really cares about your life (NSA I'm hinting..) they are only keeping tabs on the bad people. What are they going to do with audio of the argument I had with my wife over where to go to dinner?

Hi.

What is the name of that JB app?

Thanks

are you talking about cydia?

He's talking about the tweaks that exist within Cydia to make SIRI always listening for pre-iOS 9 jailbroken iPhones.

oh yes! i guess they won't update untethered lol

isn't it ironic that they introduced both hey siri, and the going back in the top left corner within apps... both tweaks available for the iOS 8 jail break?

Good grief! TURN IT OFF! It is one of the things that Apple allows us to have options.

Yes. It's always irony when Apple rips off the jailbreakers.

WiFi syncing to iTunes? It was a JB tweak first and Apple gave the dev a job.

Quick reply for text messages? Lower case keyboard? Attaching any type of file to an email?

Apple has been ripping off the JB devs and presenting the work as features for iOS in every new version for some time now.

What's truly ironic is that the venomous anti-jailbreakers either don't realize they are using stuff that was ripped off from jailbreakers or hypocritically accept it because it's now coming from Apple!

Technically the have no power, they can't do anything. They don't have any rights to any of it once they publish it there, so apple (legal standpoint) can take anything! which they always do

Great topic to pass the time as we wait.

Apple is very interested to hear what you talk about to your cat while you think no one can hear you.

The government can also hear me complain about nothing being on television.
