Force Touch isn't worth an upgrade for. Everyone knew it was coming but it's not exactly exciting. Play with the Apple Watch and go check out the new macbook that has this. After a little while you realize you're not using it all the time. It becomes a feature that is there but forgotten. Ultimately though this is the "S" series and therefore not a ton of people are going to switch over from the original 6 phones right away. For the money i'll wait for Iphone 7, with an all new design.

4S had Siri.. easily marketable feature to the average shopper...
5S had TouchID.. again, easy to sell that to the average consumer.

But 'Force Touch'...? Can you picture a sales assistant in a mobile shop telling you to go for this latest model because it has force touch? Ermmmm....

*cough* would be even lower if Apple introduced a 6C alongside it ...

But as for headline features - this baby is gonna be in rose gold - that'll shift some units! ... <sarcasm/>

I think that Force Touch on the iPhone is the best place for it.

It seems necessary on an Apple Watch and gimmicky on a Macbook trackpack, but on an iPhone, it could open up many new possibilities. It's like a surface full of buttons for any app, the home screen, or lock screen. To me, it's a great improvement, and it has me wondering whether or not I want to upgrade right after getting the 6 Plus. I've never really considered that before, and a think many more will now than usual.

Who cares about force touch.

If it has 2 gigs of ram I'll be upgrading my 6.

Well, since the 6/6+ came in a new and bigger form factor new specs won't change much for the people who prefer a more portable device..

For me personally there is no spec in the world that can save this phone. Every time I pick one up I instantly hate it.. It's slippery and too big for one handed use. No Ghz, GB och Mpix will change that..

A redesign will be the next killer feature in my opinion :)

As a shareholder the main thing I'm worried about is that upgrades from the 5S to the 6S will be lower than expected. It's still a damn good phone and I know many people who refuse to upgrade until Apple offers something in a similar size. In my experience about 20% of people I know who are upgrading from 4" screens are refusing to upgrade until something smaller is offered. Eventually they may give up but I don't think it will be this year and this upgrade cycle. Hopefully Apple at least addresses this by the iPhone 7—either with a smaller display or physically smaller phone with significantly reduced bezel.

I agree that Apple will need to do something beyond Force Touch to get people to upgrade. It's not a sexy feature like being able to unlock your phone with your finger (which was only somewhat compelling), getting a big camera upgrade or a bigger screen size. However I tend to think the camera will get some upgrades this year which may pull some users to upgrade. As a power user, I'm upgrading primarily for the extra RAM as I've seen the clear benefit in my iPad Air 2 and cannot wait for the same or better on my 6S running iOS 9.

Often-Wrong Kuo strikes again. Don't worry, he'll release half a dozen revisions before the phone actually launches.

Apple could easily add some incentive to boost sales by increasing battery life. That's a real world tangible feature that many customers want and would benefit from.

As for Force Touch, it will be all about execution. It's up to Apple to show real world use cases that actually improve the customer experience.

It really has to be about customer experience first. That trumps all else.

KGI's articles seem to be moving closer towards conjecture as of late. Throw enough guesses on the wall, something is bound to stick.

Agreed...full upgrades, S upgrades - all will be irrelevant at least in the US. By the time Iphone 7 rolls in all subsidized contracts from all carriers would be gone and nobody will have to wait 2 years to upgrade anymore.

My family and friends (8 in total) all upgraded to Iphone 6 using AT&T Next at no cost and will upgrade again to the 6s.

To me there are only two negatives of these plans:
1-You have to turn over your phone to the carrier after 12/18 months (you will get more if you resale it yourself)
2-Your monthly bill will never go down as you will be constantly paying for your phones

These new plans will accelerate upgrades instead of slowing down sales for Apple - Tim already said that in the conference calls.

This happens with every iPhone release volumes are low supply is low and shipment dates pushed back and sales increase cause people always want what they can't get.

Agreed...if you are coming from Iphone 4s,5, 5s, 5c...this would be an amazing upgrade.

In fact, if you put a a new casing on this one - this would be fantastic upgrade as well for iphone 6 users:

A9
12MP
new LTE chip
2G RAM
7000 frame
Force Touch

Forgot 5MP/1080p FaceTime

You can say these things about all S releases. Last release was touch ID and when that was released, the only thing you could do was unlock the phone. The 4S brought Siri. Again seemed gimmicky at the start cause there wasn't that much in terms of functionality. Things always blossom in the next main year releases and the use of those added features becomes apparent. Not sure what Apple has in store for Force Touch with the iPhone 7 and iOS10. But, what I do know is that is all baked into the reason for it being added in this release. One thing that comes to mind is that with force touch, it could be the stepping stone to a full screen device with no home button. Need to get people used to the idea using alternate methods of interacting with the device and this is always what an S year provides.

The 6 and 6 Plus were truly massive last year in terms of sales. I definitely wouldn't be surprised if these new iPhones become the first time ever where Apple isn't able to sell more Iphones than the prior launch. I see way more people who have upgraded to the 6 and 6 Plus than any iPhone before.

I've upgraded every year since the 3GS.

There are three reasons I may not this time:
1. I have absolutely no problems with my 6+. I love this phone...still
2. AT&T Next. Usually I sell my old phone and buy a new one, but unless I pay full retail, by monthly service will go up at least $15 per month. I upgraded my wife's phone (she wanted a 5S) in May, so I'm already paying extra.
3. Aside from force touch, stronger frame (supposedly), and 2GB of RAM, what else will Apple add? I have Applecare+, so if my phone ever bends, I'll just get a new one.

Don't get me wrong, I WANT a new phone, but I really can't justify it.

Although, my wife says my daughter needs a phone as she's going to high school this year. Maybe she will end up with my 6+ (in an Otterbox case as I don't trust her not to drop it) and I will get the 6S+...maybe....

I think the problem is most people don't need to upgrade their phones as often, if you have an iPhone you can still get IOS9 Apple Music on a phone from 2011... I know plenty of friends and older people who still use their 4s or 5.

Unfortunately for Apple, hardware is becoming so good and capable, that you don't need to upgrade it for a long time. My 2009 iMac still feels like day 1, my 2013 MBA feels like a macbook air from 2015, and my iPad air is more than suffice for the next few years.

It'll be interesting how Apple will convince users to upgrade more often, their advertising surely shows this. Shot on iPhone 6 campaign great example.

Wow. This is why AAPL is down 5%? Because somebody is guessing iPhone sales will decline, even though YOY iPhone sales never declined! Apple needs a public relations person like Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk, because they know how to sweet talk wall street. APPL PE ratio is 13 with cash, without it, it's probably about 8. NASDAQ would be at 2000 if every company got the APPL treatment.

In my experience about 20% of people I know who are upgrading from 4" screens are refusing to upgrade until something smaller is offered.

I hope Apple offers a 4" phone for those certain people who desire one.

Other companies have seemingly abandoned 4" phones outside of super-cheap models.

But even Motorola's budget Moto G is 5"

Apple was the last company to offer a 4" flagship-level phone... and that phone launched in 2013.

I wonder what the future holds for 4" phones.

"Zero or negative growth"

Vs

"Still capturing ~90% of all profits in the entire smartphone market"
Guess which one gets shared in news more.

Maybe, except ATT gets to resell the old phone or use it as a warranty replacement and that takes sales away from Apple of new product.

That would be me. I've been on an every two year upgrade cycle since the original iPhone, so this would be my year, but without a 4" screen model, I'll stick with my 5S and skip this year. And a warmed over last year's model labeled 6C won't do either. Top-of-the-line with a 4" (or even better a 3.5") screen or no sale.

Force Touch sounds too creepy...

I thought it was a new ability for a new Star Wars: The Force Unleashed game. That would have me more excited than the next iPhone.

I'm usually quite interested in what's upcoming, but this time I'm not feeling that way. Probably because my attention is more on the next Microsoft phone offerings, plus the fact I'm happy with my iPhone 6 Plus and am not feeling the need to upgrade early like I have with the last few releases.
