Anyone have pictures of Fifth Avenue? Those two guys weren't camping out 20 days in advance like last year so I haven't heard any news on that line.

At Sydney Apple shop:

"Further down the line is a tablet connected to a pair of wheels, and a woman can be seen sleeping on the display.

She is hoping to be the first robot to buy a phone, her sign says."

Lolololol

Back in the day (iPhone 4) I did the line up thing, but that was when I couldn't afford to buy it out of contract. It was easier and quicker to get through Apple than through the ****** telcos and you couldn't preorder or reserve at the time either.

Back then the lines lasted for weeks in the morning. I wouldn't do it again as I can buy contract-free and have it delivered.

Lines these days are nothing like they used to be in Au and US judging by those photos.

I really don't like being mean but you have to be an unbelievable loser to do this.

Do these people have jobs?

A buddy and occasional dev partner of mine did this when the 5 came out - he was in between very lucrative indie contractor gigs with me, he hung out, met some reasonably attractive woman, got a phone, had an interesting experience. Now he's heading up some killer engineering projects at a company I'm sure you've heard of :)

I'm not into it, but I pass _zero_ judgement on the people who do - and you never know, some of them may be pretty interesting people.

Wow, such "commitment" Not. It's a pity people wouldn't be willing to spend that much time camping out in the street for days to help homeless people, talking to them and helping them, buying them lunch. Such misplaced stamina and loyalty, it truly saddens me in a way, it's kinda idiotic - there's no "respect" from Apple for this, they KNOW you're hooked into their little world of expensive piffle.

Do people really have NOTHING more productive and edifying to do with their free time and money? Saddens me. So inward-looking and self-serving. It's not even as if these are "limited edition", rare objects... LOL.

The sales associate said last year the line started on Tuesday. It was just those same 2 people when I stopped by earlier today (around 1:30). The rep said I could show up at 7:50am for my 8:00-8:30am window and I'd be out of there by 8:30am. I'll find out tomorrow. Oak Brook told my sister that they will hold reservations until the end of the day.

Do you suppose we'd have better luck at the North Michigan Ave store, or perhaps head out to Old Orchard in Skokie, Lincoln Park, etc? Honestly, I preordered at apple.com, mine will be here tomorrow via ups - so I didn't pay much attention to the details of those wanting to buy launch day. I'm guessing there will be stock even for those without reservations. I hope. I believe my bf is after a 64 6s plus in space gray, or a 128.

It's all about passion, passion to Apple, Apple product, iPhone. People simply love shiny new Apple gadget, not Samsung, not HP - which they can only dream of to copy. And sometimes they go to extreme to prove their passion. It's an art.

Or.
It's just a marketing ploy. Move along.

It's nowhere near as profound and deep as that; it's just plain dopey. Who wants to queue up to "prove" something to themselves and/or others, to buy a mass produced item? Are people's lives THAT devoid of true fulfillment and meaning, that this kinda cheap thrill fills the void? Apple reward you with free coffee and "whoop whoop!" and hand slaps... so what? Utterly moronic.

I have NOTHING against waiting in line or the people that do it.

I just was wondering why wait in line when you could have made a reservation?

I made a reservation on the 13th for pickup at 6:30 tomorrow.

Why wait in line?

Thanks.

I don't understand why anyone would do this.

It is kind of fun getting to know the other people that are waiting and getting excited for the same new product. I have waited in lines a couple times, but never overnight. It was fun those few times, but I am over it now. I will just wait until I can just walk in and buy one.

You realise you can go and meet people without needing to go to an Apple store, right? By the way, I mean REAL meetings, not this online "community" nonsense.

Samsung's new note 5 is so much h of an iPhone copy. It's sad. Can't they hire intelligent people to come up with their own ideas.

Same old BS "arguments" just get copied and pasted without thinking. The world is TRULY becoming more dumb with the advent of the internet.

Where the hell did you get that from? I don't give a rats @ss full of sh*t what people do with their time. Doesn't matter one bit to me. My likes and dislikes are NOT present in my post at all. You're missing the point..... but alas, I can break it down for you and will phrase it in another way that, hopefully, you will comprehend without making horrible, inaccurate inferences: "I don't understand the appeal of queuing up in line well in advance (or at all) for something that can easily be ordered online". I went on to try to rationalize or justify why they *may* do it (hence the sentences about the social aspects of waiting in line) but It's obvious that was a bit over your head.

Again, my whole post must have been lost on you. To pull one from the annals of the internets: reading comprehension > you.

You would be greatly benefited in life to have a less polarized, combative approach to your interactions with others and more of a deep-thinking about the message that other party/parties are *really* trying to convey.

Diehard rabid fanboys will clutch at ANY fragment of poor reasoning, and shape it into a piecemeal "reason" to do something their-pet-brand-related. You're wasting breath, let em queue, and be thankful you're not that sad :p

I did the local hick town line up thing at the cellphone places that were getting iPhones on launch day. I showed up at like 7AM and hung out and talked to other mac people - it was fun honestly. But I typically hate line-ups at theatres for popcorn and stuff. I really avoid lining up for anything if possible. But camping out and talking with people and having a few laughs is a good time, so I can totally related to the iPhone line-up stuff.

Even so, I think the pre-order and UPS delivery thing is WAY way better.

I'd much rather spazz out on my computers and devices at home at 1AM to get my pre-order in within the first few minutes to guarantee the first day delivery that way.

Plus, you know the real reason I don't line up locally anymore? It's because I can buy the iPhone unlocked from Apple Directly and when you do the "Rogers Cellphone" line-up thing you end up having problems getting an unlocked phone sometimes.

ALSO I think they should not be penalizing people by making them wait and camping out like that. They should be issuing some sort of tickets or voucher/raincheck thingies and let the people go home.

It's surprisingly good that there have not been any major incidents like the black friday mob stuff that happened a few years back. It shows you kindof that Apple customers have some class in some geeky way.

They say "A fool and his money are soon parted". A wise man is surely a better custodian of large amounts of money than a fool who squanders his wealth for instant gratification, so according to common sense, the ONLY way you'd find me in one of these overnight queues would be to buy as many iPhone 6S+ as I could, and then sell them on at a 1.5-2x/whatever profit (even a small profit, and at the first profit margin over the price of one unit, I'd give one away to a needy or humble person, for whom owning one would be TRULY appreciated and treasured, OR I'd give them its value in cash :) ). Now this will be contentious, and many won't agree with that, but then... I don't need the validation of strangers, and wise people make money (as long as it is just and moral money) from those too immature and irresponsible to know how to handle and manage their money properly, so I'd sell them at a profit. There's nothing "immoral" about selling an iPhone at a huge profit - those buying them are VERY well informed, evidently have no concept of how to responsibly manage their funds, and extremely stupid to be willing to do so, so there is no reason for the transfer of wealth NOT to go from the foolish to the prudent, canny and informed person who will invest wisely, and in a fair and morally upright fashion.

I want to make a living, not a killing, but when people are going bonkers over a stupid bit of metal and silicon, then their money is better off being re-directed to someone mature and responsible than to remain in the hands of fools.

Do what you want with your life but I never understood how people can camp out for 2 days for a phone. I see how but do they not have jobs? Do they take vacation around the time of the phone launch? Not being hostile here, just curious.
