If by "buying" a phone you meant reservation & pick-up - I believe once the phone is reserved it's yours. When you go in store you can choose to purchase it in whatever way you're eligible for.

But if you meant placing an actual order through apple.com, then it's finalized. Your card is charged when phone is shipped.
 
I've been following the thread for the past week or so and checking *6737# a few times a day. Our 2 phones (ordered around 6:30 and 8:30 am Eastern on 9/9) have just changed from "in process" to "back order" in the past hour or so. Both are Matte Black, 7 plus, 128 GB. Hoping to get a ship notice soon based on what others have said about getting one shortly after the backorder status...
 
It seems that maybe the spam text wasn't just spam? Of those who just went to back ordered or shipped, didn't you also get the text? I have not gotten the spam text & I have had no change to my orders (7+ 256gb matte black)
 
I can only check the text number by using the phone number or the contact number. My order number although correct aways returns a "we were unable to retrieve order details with the info" message. When you've gone to backorder has it always been by checking via the order number on there or does the phone number return the same result?

I checked the *6737# and it now says backordered. When I got that text around 2ish I checked and it was still saying in progress. Hoping this is a good sign.

MB iPhone 7+ 128GB in GA

I never got the spam text and I went to back ordered a few hours ago

I didn't get text and not back ordered.... super pissed as I see more and more shipping that ordered after me
 
My 128Gb MB Plus just went to backordered as well. Only via the *6737# . Ship date was 23-30th as well. I have my fingers crossed, due to using this galaxy s5 my little brother let me use while I wait, the S7 started to spark my interest.

Well what if I'm placing an actual order through Apple.com but using the pick-up option. Basically, through this:

Around 12 noon est. I noticed that my order via the *6737# number went from processing to back ordered, I received a text and email that my phone shipped today and will be delivered by 8pm tomorrow by fedex.

iPhone 7 Plus Black (not jet black)
32 GB
Ordered: 9-9-16 @ 5:36 am EST.
Delivery dates: Sept. 30th to Oct. 7th
