While I'm not in Memphis, back during the pre-order for the 6, I had the same issue. When I called and asked why I could not change the delivery options, They told me that they were required to attempt delivery at least once before changing the delivery options.
Most have been just a matter of hours, but one person has been backordered for almost 4 days now.
My wife's 7+ Rose Gold arrived yesterday and I think it has the hissing issue. 
It definitely got warm while restoring from cloud backup and I could hear the static noise from the chip for awhile. We're going to hold off on going to the apple store right away with it but if it doesn't get better she's going to go in.

I just joined the "Back Order" club. Hopefully I'll get shipping notification sometime today. It will most likely be for delivery Monday right? No Saturday deliveries?

1) For the $650 in bill credits promotion when you trade in a 6s, do you just have to ORDER by 9/30, or do you have to activate by 9/30?
2) Do you have to order direct from AT&T to get this promotion? Or can I just sign up for a next plan through an Apple Store order?

Me too. I'm hoping they really aren't actually backordered
If they really are back ordered that's extremely f****d up that ATT would wait until a week after launch to say that.... then again that's probably normal practice for them.

I called the number in your thread post, and when I used option 2 "Use this Number" it says my service has been activated but it does not say anything about the pending status of the iPhone 7 + phone. Whenever I try and use the order number associated with the confirmation email, AT&T cannot find that, however when I use my wireless, the iPhone 7 + is registered. Thoughts?
I found the phone I want at the local Apple store. I'm still in the "Preparing to Ship" mode with AT&T. Do I have to cancel my order before I can get the one at the Apple Store?
Have you called them yet? You're phone might be one of those pinging back and forth
The 9/30 date applies to only Peurto Rico. And if you are from there I guess you will actually have to trade in your 6s before the 30th (https://www.att.com/esupport/article.html#!/wireless/KM1123971).
From what I understand, you are eligible to get this promotion even if you get the phone from Apple as long as you signup for the AT&T Next plan. Please confirm before you actually do it.

Backordered means its shipping and in ATT system but not yet in route to your residence.
Don't cancel. Go to the store first and make sure they really have what you need. Then cancel. I have an appointment today at 12 so i will be doing the same thing.
Yup. Just got my Fedex notification coming from Memphis to St. Peters Mo. and yes Monday is going to be a very long wait. At least now I know it is finally coming. Ordered on 09/09/2016 at 6:08:24 p.m. ET. It would have been great to have it this weekend and get it set up. I guess we finally get to look forward to a Monday.
If you're in Puerto Rico, it ended 9/30. Those of us in the US, it just states "limited time offer", and could end today if they decide to end it.
As far as whether you have to order from AT&T, some have been told that as long as you finance through Next with Apple, you are eligible. I believe there are a few that have actually already turned their old phone in to AT&T having purchased at Apple, but don't want to mislead you. The fine print never specifically states that you can order through Apple, but to me alludes to the fact that you're buying from AT&T. I'd do an online chant its I were buying from Apple and then have that if AT&T balks.
The first paragraph here does NOT state you have to buy through AT&T, just that it's through one of their Next plans.

FWIW I just did online chat with two different at&t reps and both stated that the 7 must be purchased from AT&T, and that even if purchased on the Next plan through Apple, it would not qualify for the trade in promo, so I think I'll stick with my preorders. Not worth the fight with them to try to get them to honor it IMO.
