Any word on if the replacement was better?
Got my replacement and unfortunately no. It has the same static sound when recording but only in a silent environment or room. I think it's safe to say all iPhone 7s make this noise. I hope apple addresses this soon. I'm going to wait a few weeks and try to get another replacement and see if the newer batches aren't defective.

new to this thread and still haven't gotten my iPhone 7 Plus. so how bad is this hissing issue? this is tolerable right? are all phones affected by this?

7 plus arrived today and no noises while updating.
Check to see if you have a static high pitch sound while recording a video. Make sure you do it in a silent room. Mine doesn't make the hissing while tasking on the phone but does pick up some static sound while recording video.

After the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus began arriving to the first round of pre-order customers on Friday, a few users noticed what's become known as a "hissing" sound emanating from the back of the device, where the Apple logo is located. The first reports began on Friday, but the occurrence gained ground when 512 Pixels' Stephen Hackett tweeted about it, posting a video with the "terrible noises" produced by his iPhone clearly audible, which he determined to be caused by heavy performance at the time.

When he brought the issue to AppleCare, Hackett was told to bring the iPhone into an Apple retail location to swap it out, but given the low stock of nearly all iPhone 7 models, that solution isn't particularly helpful at the moment. Friday night, a member of the MacRumors forums, liorgr, confirmed the somewhat "common" issue facing the iPhone 7, although it's still unknown as to whether the noise could come from all versions of the device, or if it's just "a faulty batch."
Since his tweet, more and more iPhone 7 users have come forward about the issue and corroborated Hackett's story. On the MacRumors forums, mentions of a "buzzing" and "static" sound coming from the back of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus began on Friday afternoon. Specifically, forum member maxlind noted that the noise happened on his 128GB iPhone 7 Plus under load, without charging or restoring from an iCloud backup.
One Redditor who got his iPhone 7 Plus replaced at an Apple store noticed immediately that his new iPhone was making a similar sound, so the issue could potentially be affecting a large number of iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus models due to the high-capacity performance abilities of the A10 chip. Since there are no actual moving components on the chip, it's still unclear what could be making the noise.

As pointed out by The Verge, the consensus of the noise's origin online is that it's caused by a phenomenon known as "coil noise."
Still, despite the problem slowly becoming infamous over the weekend, some sites tried to replicate the issue and failed. Using performance benchmark software 3D Mark "Ice Storm Extreme," Engadget ended up hearing "no hissing at all" on the 4.7-inch iPhone 7. As many users have theorized, the sound issue could "stem from a manufacturing issue instead of an inherent design quirk." Until Apple addresses the problem, that still leaves affected users to either deal with the noise, or attempt to get a replacement that could potentially face the same sound.

It is true. I have just received the iPhone 7 plus 128GB from the German store and I am hearing this sound. I did not do any heavy duty. I just activated the iPhone without iCloud pick up. I will return the iPhone back. I will wait for the iPhone of the next year.

I hope you mean the iphone 8 or whatever. I doubt they fix this in a silent update. They still havent commented publicy. And they never fixed bendgate or loose iphone 5 buttons and rattle until the next model.

Do you notice it just in general or specifically when recording videos?
Only 10 days late on a reply lol.

I noticed the most on day one when I was downloading all the apps and I assume iOS was indexing everything and what not, so it is definitely related to how high the load is on the processor. I planned on waiting a couple weeks since I assumed if it was related to a cap or the new processor I wanted to make sure the swap was actually fixed... but I managed to crack the glass on my phone :( so I doubt they will swap it now unless I get applecare+ and pay for a swap.

Wow, that sucks. Can't hurt to ask nicely at the Apple Store. The one I usually go to has been very nice to me and even been making up pretexts for exchanging phones that were not strictly candidates for free replacements.

Exactly. So it's normal. I'll say it again, it happened on my 6s. It's nothing new. CPU's make noise. Shock horror!

CPU's are solid state, they don't make noise. Where do you people come up with this junk?

This problem is likely caused by a faulty capacitor impacted by some resonant frequency. Wait for Apple to find out and swap out the supplier, and then go in to exchange your phone.

That's probably not happening. Apple hasnt even acknowledged this issue and when they do(bendgate) they didnt even fix that until the 6S. The rattle of the power button on the 5 they didnt fix until the se. Also remember the ipad 3 overheat that was never an issue and it got really really hot but they said it was ok

having this problem with my iphone 7 plus 256 gb jet black

all my live photos have a loud hiss when i play them

I just opened up my AT&T Black 7Plus 128GB and noticed that it was very warm during the restore and then I noticed the hissing noise. It is repeatable if I put it under load. I have don't any recording yet, but if the noise impacts recordings they better get it figured out. People saying that folks complain just to complain is asinine. We pay good money for electronics that have no moving parts there shouldn't be any hissing that impacts recordings. My 6 Plus got plenty hot on many times but never made a peep.

So I thought this would be hogwash.... not so mine just arrived and I wouldn't call it a hiss... it's defiantly there. It reminds me of old computer noise while under a heavy workload if you were trying to say record audio, its that type of hiss.... very unexpected. Very odd.

Is the hissing noise a special feature...seems to be happening alot...sounds like electricity circuit board issues

Tested mine by taking video... A definite mechanical hiss noise. Like if you stand close to a tv?

Guys i was thinking about buying Iphone 7 plus but now I am confused with 'hissing'. Should I buy 6s PLUS or wait for some official statement from Apple? You think they will fix it in quiet or won't do anything? It seems like most of them are affected.

All models are backordered. Apple has no incentive to issue a statment and confuse people or even fix it if it is an issue to them

Or...... all the models are just backorders and Apple is just busy :) and I think for them it is not an issue at all.
