I usually prefer to do a clean install, just to keep everything fresh. It might also make me take a look at cleaning up what apps I put on the phone, etc.

Is there a way to restore messages? I believe on my 6s when I set it up from backup all message history was lost.

I do a clean install every three months or so or when a new iOS update is released. I have a cheat sheet I step through it's actually quick but still don't know an easy way to transfer text messages.

Yes a bit OCD but I can't risk embedded hacking code buried in old stuff and I travel outside of U.S. and use my phone in China with their SIM cards. Can't complain having a smooth lean running phone all the time.
A bit?

Nope

Every year I want to start new, but I have a large backlog of texts and app data that I don't want to lose. Those are the only two things that keep me restoring every year.

While I wait on shipment,I will clean up the existing phone. Do a fresh backup right before I set up the 7+ and restore. I wish it restored messages! I had a long text conversation the day before my brother unexpectedly passed. I did not think about taking some screen shots before I set up my 6S and it was lost.

How are you restoring texts?

Some people clearly have too much free time :D

I've never seen any conclusive proof that a completely clean phone runs any better than one with a restored backup. I think some people just have long memories and remember clean installs of 20 year old Windows operating systems speeding things up, at least until the registry was full of **** again and needed to be reinstalled. So glad those days are long gone :D

Would love to do a fresh install but I'm pretty sure it loses all of the Activity/Health data from the watch? If that is indeed the case, restore it is.

I'm curious as to whether people will be getting their new iPhones and restoring from a backup of their 6/6S or just setting it up as a new phone?

I had a number of software issues with my 6 after owning it for a couple of months and an Apple Genius advised me to reset it back to factory settings and avoid using an old restore from my previous iPhone 5. I can't remember exactly what he said the benefits of doing this were.

What do people reckon?

Always restore from backup. Some time during the years, I may have decided to reset and start over. On my iPad once, things started to act weird and I reset it and started over. Some stuff was lengthy to reset.
[doublepost=1473550576][/doublepost]For things like contacts, a person doesn't even have to do a restore. As long as you have it setup to sync with some service. I use iCloud, but there are other services.

I notice the phones are running smoother in the long run compared to older phones. I don't know if it's more memory they're throwing at it or leaner iOS but I feel a cleanup is not needed often to gain max performance.

But I can feel the sluggishness haha nothing like Windows that's hell but it just feels less responsive over time.

I do wish there was an option on restore to select categories of items to restore. 3rd party apps do that but I not sure how native the result will be.

Agreed.

During the week of waiting, i.e. this week, I go through my phone and get rid of any junk, etc. then back it up and ready to restore onto new phone. Keeps me occupied during the wait week ;)

started this yesterday. thinning out apps I don't use, text message threads with attachments, etc.

Have lots of texts from my late wife, if I didn't set up from iCloud I would lose these or can they be restored another way? Anyway not willing to take the chance.

From backup, I can't remember what apps I even cure have now. Not to mention how will I contact people. Only number I know is my mothers. I have always restored from backups since I no longer jailbreak my phones. Think last jailbreak phone I had was the 4S. I've never had any issues with my phones (knock on wood) I'm good to them and they have been good to me lol

Hmm, not sure to be honest. I have thousands of photos I want to carry over, and it is convenient to have everything immediately to my preference. But there is definitely some innate satisfaction and pleasure to be had in starting fresh with a shiny new phone...

I haven't had any issues with restores, I have thousands of pictures of my kids from now going back 5 years, moving up to the 128 to capture even more..

How the hell do people manage to do fresh installs? That means losing your contacts, pictures, messages, notes etc.

Would just be too manic. I could probably risk it if I decided to keep my previous phone and use that as s backup

I always set up as new. I like the feeling of a fresh new phone.

Contacts and pictures are backed up on iCloud. Messages can be a problem. But you can always screen shot the important messages you need.

If messages are still in the Messages.app on OSX, will it stay there in the event of a new setup or are those erased as well?

Restore from backup. Too many novel text messages I prefer to keep as running as well as the rest of my app preferences, pics. I bought the 256 so I am covered.
