Restore from backup as always. I'm still using the same backup that's been carried over since the original iPhone. I have my icons and apps arranged exactly how I want them and it would be really annoying trying to do that from scratch. That said, I usually take the time to delete unused apps, etc, before I backup my old device for restore on the new one. :p
Same here. I keep my iPhone clean, so the apps on it are the ones I actually use. Besides, I was on the iOS 10 public beta so my phone/apps are all on iOS 10. The only time I have started fresh is if there was a hardware/software problem that I could not resolve. This will not the case when I move from my 6s to my 7.

I have been restoring from iCloud backup ever since it was an option. It is the simplest way to set your phone up, and get you back to where you were.

Specifically, I like having all of my text messages, call history, photos, videos, apps, screen layouts, settings, just everything.

I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to go through and set everything up manually every year. I always hated doing that.

Usually restore from backup. Also now with the Apple Watch. If you setup as a fresh iPhone install. Can you even retrieve the watch backup.

If I set up as a fresh install can I still get my saved contacts? I'd love to start fresh but I can't part without my contacts.

Clean install, old phone and new phone side by side, going through every setting on each and making them the same.

I've installed from backup on every single launch and never had an issue. No idea why you would want to do otherwise...that's a lot of work.

It sure is. I set up with a back up last year and had major issues. Restored as new and was fine. But, dang! Took me 3 days to get set back up. I won't do it, unless it's really neccessary.

Restoring for sure, I've been using roughly the same data since the iPhone 5s, so I'd hate to lose placement of apps/data.

New phone + new OS = fresh start. Since iCloud takes care of all the important things (contacts, photos, email account info, notes, etc.), I don't really see a need personally for restoring from backups anymore. I need to get rid of a bunch of apps anyway.

HOWEVER, I may do it solely to get my entire Spotify library downloaded offline onto my new 7. Does anyone know the best way to go about this? Not really looking forward to checking "make available offline" for every song again.

It's even better now...if you encrypt your backups it restores passwords and such too. In the past, you always had to re-enter mail passwords and stuff.

Always restore from backup, I imagine it would be a right pain not to. I'll probably have a clear up of apps before hand though. I have a habit of downloading apps that look cool that I never use, so I'll try and get back down to two pages before thursday.

Yes, if you're using an iPhone go into Settings > iCloud and turn on everything you want to sync to iCloud and it will sync back to your new phone. There's no easy way to save text messages Apple needs to do something about that one.

Edit: Nozuka beat me to it but you get the idea.

I've always restored from backup going all the way back to the original iPhone. This includes after jailbreaking (haven't done that in a long time, and don't plan to do it on my main phone). I didn't have problems until the iPhone 6, where I started having random crashes which bring up the boot logo (but comes back very quickly). I've tried various attempts at fixing this, but it still happens regularly. I'm on a 6S now and it still happens. I'm hoping iOS 10 fixes it.

Starting with a completely clean install is just not going to happen for me. I'd rather deal with the occasional random crash than give up years of data. It'd be different if I could selectively restore individual apps (e.g. I really don't want to give up my Messages history).

I've suspected that my issue could have something to do with photos/video (it often happens with I'm taking a screenshot, though not always). I plan to delete all my photo/video data and see if that helps. I'm also considering switching from Aperture to Photos for Mac / iCloud Photos, so that might be a good idea to start with a clean Photos app on my iPhone. I may look into saving my Favorites somehow before I do this (the only thing I value in Photos app that is only on my phone).

skimmed through this whole thread to see if this was already asked, but didn't see it.

can you restore/setup a new iphone 7 with an ios 9 backup? and when you restore, will it be running ios 9 or ios 10?

I prefer to set up as new, but as stated, it takes a LONG time. This year I will probably set up as new as I ran beta up until now and I don't trust this alleged 'GM' that Apple just sent us.

This year I'm looking at starting as new iPhone. What's the best way to get my pictures from my 6S to 7? Would I just add them to iPhoto on my Mac then sync photos through iTunes?
Not bothered about messages etc, I appear to have almost 11gb of messages.

Clean install would be a nightmare for me. I can't stand all the settings. However I do local backups 2 times a month and to the cloud. So if I needed to rollback I usually can find a good restore point.
