I'm confused because I thought Apple's reason for removing the headphone jack was to make the iPhone 7 thinner…

I'm sure that's not the only motive for that change. Wireless tech is getting better and better and by eliminating the headphone jack that market will flood with wireless headphones, which in return will make the tech cheaper and better. Kind of reminds me of when they removed the CD-ROM.

Great! So now new iPhone 7's headphones won't even work with my MacBook or new MacBook Pro.

While Android is moving to USB-C which means their headphones will work with USB-C ports of MacBook and new MacBook Pro.

How does Apple always manage to **** us all with these ports?!?!

Bluetooth headphones don't work on your MacBook or new MacBook Pro? ;)

Size of port on case, all high end Android phones now have it, the MacBook, USB-C is APPLE'S standard (they created it), it does everything, the time is right.

It's obvious.

Not at all - Apple helped develop the standard then turned around and used USB -A to lightning on the keyboard and trackpad.

I've seen many cheaply made iPhone cases with that big of cutout for a lightning port. I don't think it's settled at all. Lightning is sticking around.

Dont just think of the next gen phone, think 2 and 3 models down the line. and what Apples plan might be.

Lightning is GONE because you cannot listen to audio and charge simultaneously. That wipes out many use cases (like plugging the phone into a big audio system for a party). USB-C can do both simultaneously.

Sheesh. How come no-one pays me big bucks to be an analyst?

Bluetooth headphones suck;

Garbage sound quality, constant need to recharge, drains battery life on the phone too.

Right, because Apple isn't going to offer an improvement over current BT technology?

It astounds me that Apple enthusiasts are so willing to condemn Apple as removing an essential technology without replacing it with something better, despite doing exactly that for over 30 years!

Right, because this never occurred to Apple? Are you serious!?

I suspect Apple has something more elegant in mind, but the solution to this FUD problem has been around since they invented electricity.

Have you ever observed that an iPhone plugged into a car or computer (via lightning cable) can still charge and play music simultaneously? No one will pay you the big bucks if you miss that observation.

lol. How would you charge and listen at same time with USB-C? Same way as lightning -with an ADAPTER. You can charge and listen at the same time with lightning, I do it regularly.

Apple will ship an adapter. Mark my words. They already have to ship a lightning to micro USB adapter in Europe because of EU standards.

USB-C has

are you ready?

ANALOG output for audio.

So cheap little earbuds still work.

Lightning only has digital audio output requiring circuitry.

Where do I pick up my analyst check.

Sheesh now Ming whatever is just going to write an article saying the same thing and make big bucks. Lol.

This is such a disappointment if true. Not just because of headphone jack removal, but because the design is the same. The far superior Galaxy Edge design has been out for two years now and it looks like we'll only see Apple's attempt at a superior OLED, bezel-less design in 2017.

As someone who purposefully upgrades every 2 years on the non-S cycle in order to get the less-refined but re-designed version of the phone, I am so not okay with this tick-tock-tock cycle. I really hope the rumours are not true, but since the past 18 months of Apple have been a huge disappointment in general, I can't really hold out much hope.

If all other phone makers over say the next year or two end up going with USB C for headphone jacks, do you feel Apple would be wise to, this year go with a propriatory connector?

Would that work in their favour or against them?

Exactly. You get it. No one else seems to have figured that out yet.

I care more about dual camera for now than for the removal of headphones jack. Considering current Apple management who knows what the next iPhone will be, maybe they'll return back to single camera which is unlikely but won't surprise me at all.

If they manage to do something clever with dual camera like 3D shooting and refocusing then I'm in. If all they have is dumb "zoom" feature then it'll be the first iPhone that looks and feels like a cheap Chinese gimmick - old design, no headphones jack and dual camera added just for the cool factor.

Lightning is already capable of analogue audio. If Apple wanted to go that route they would, and they would have done it with the 30-pin to Lightning adapters rather than including DACs and amps. But why would they? That's as bad as customer's being forced to buy that $10 adapter for the original iPhone so that non-Apple headphones could be used with it, without offering any improvement. Talk about a money grab.

USB-C is not the answer -- that would force 200 million iOS customers to run out and buy new cables and adapters for their devices. And for what? To accommodate cheaper adapters for customers who don't want to move forward with new technology? Not likely.

Wow. They're going USB-C. I didn't expect this. I thought they'd wait until next year.

I'm willing to bet that rumor is wrong. And I'm not sure if Apple will ever embrace USB-C especially since the Smart Connector is here.

"...The problem with using the Lightning port for audio is you can't charge the phone and listen at the same time."

WHO does that????
