Have you tried the new trackpads? They are completely convincing.
Actually I purchased a 15" MBP fully loaded 4 months prior to the MBP with the new track pad. Night and day when it comes to performance

You're going to lose those AirPods almost immediately. I hope they sell single-ear replacements.

This or they'll be ripped out of your ears as soon as the extra chargers are available

Sorry if this has been discussed already, just trying to catch up. Can anyone please point me to any reviews of the sound quality via airpods and particularly via lightning/3.5 jack adapter? I'm desperately hoping it's not apple against the music. ...

How could it possibly not be worse?

It's nice to know the headphone jack adapter is only $9 by itself. For all of the rumors and hysteria that the adapters could cost $30 or more, I think Apple did a sufficient job today of quelling those fears.

I do wish they'd added a pass-through Lightning port to offer charging and playback simultaneously, however.

Also realizing that we won't be able to plug our new headphones into our laptops.

Yeah, so.... it comes w/ an adapter & new ones are only $9. You can use ANY studiophile/audiophile headset with no worries.
There is no anything vs. anything. There is only us enjoying our music as we always have...
No need to try to make a "thing" out of it.

just asking mate, not trying to make a thing out of it - I begin with the hypothesis wireless>loss of quality, adapter>loss of quality so I've only asked for evidence to reject it :) any pointers welcome. ps reason 2 is I've just spent a lot of money on a new AKG set...

Ahhh... a fellow high-end headphone owning music lover!!! =)
Apologies for misunderstanding your point- in answer:
YES, at present, wireless (via Bluetooth) creates a degradation in quality... one that I'm not currently willing to bear. It remains to be seen whether Apple's new W1 chip changes the quality, or merely makes pairing easier. That wait will be a bit for me, as I am loathe to buy a set of Beats & the only other set with the W1 is the piss-poor audio quality EarPods new wireless version, the AirPod.
If they leased W1 to Sennheiser, Grado, AKG, Etymotic, et al - I'd jump on board, if there is a significant difference in audio quality.
The answer to your other question is:
There haven't been any audio hardware adapters so far (to my knowledge) that cause any degradation whatsoever; so we should be happily enjoying our music on our new phones, sans 3.5mm soon, no problem!!

Also realizing that we won't be able to plug our new headphones into our laptops.

Yes. There appears to be no solution to encourage use of Lightning EarPods for those who use anything but newer iOS devices.

So your best bet is to put them in a drawer, and get out an old pair of 3.5mm EarPods and use them with the free adapter they give you.

So much for pushing the frontiers of audio delivery ...

Kinda resembles the Steve Wozniac huh?1? LOL!

Sorry.. So there are two speakers in the bottom now?
No..

Believe anything apple tells you to without thought.
Apple products have done extremely well for me, over the last 10 years or so. They have built a great eco system where their products talk well to each other. For the first time in about 10 years I had one problem with my last iPhone, and they replaced the phone immediately without question. I find their products to be VERY dependable and I AGREE, that the future is wireless. So removing the headphone jack to allow more space for 2 speakers and larger battery makes perfect sense to me. If you do not like the direction they are going, go buy a Samsung or something...no wait, those phones are exploding. Oh well....it is like gay marriage...if you don't like it....DON'T GET ONE!!!
