Sorry if this has been discussed already, just trying to catch up. Can anyone please point me to any reviews of the sound quality via airpods and particularly via lightning/3.5 jack adapter? I'm desperately hoping it's not apple against the music. ...

Profits. Apple can license out Lightning, but they can't do that with USB-C.

I know that Apple has licensed Lightning to various 3rd-party manufacturers that make adapters and Lightning-compatible products for iPhone. But curious, has Apple licensed (or plans to license) Lightning to handset manufacturers like Samsung and LG to specifically allow those companies to use Lightning ports on their smartphones?

That will make a great tagline for Samsung's next print ad!
Yes,

Only 10 seconds slower than a year old iphone and about 30 seconds slower than the newest iphone.
Great! S8 from 2017 will again be just 10 seconds slower than 2017 iphone.

The first one is free. It comes in the box with the iPhone. There's no kitten in the box, so if you want a free kitten, you'll have to look elsewhere. Apple apparently doesn't believe in free kittens, but they will give you a free adapter.

Simple. Charge your phone in the daytime. That leaves the night free for listening to music with your lightning headphones.

True but... As like most people we are doing more than just listening to music resulting in shorter battery life.
The other spec that apple is not telling is when I am using the lightning headset how much greater power draw does that port use verses the old analog port.
I bet it's more juice killing the battery even faster.

What would be the point of that? They could get the same for cheaper, by using USB-C.

Does anybody know what the latency is using the lightning headphone verses the analog port?
I know Bluetooth has this problem. I hate playing games or watching videos and the sound is just slightly out of sync with what is going on in the screen.
[doublepost=1473332480][/doublepost]Just think, someday apple can reintroduce the analog port again and say it's new!
Anyone remember the fiasco of apple removing the finder color labels in os x and then reintroducing it again as if it was a new feature.

Wired connection will be 0 latency. W1 will compensate for wireless lag where it can (videos already compensate for BT lag, but that's of course impossible with games).

Has anyone else noted the twin speaker grills on the bottom? Remember the rumours Apple were going to replace the headphone jack with fake speaker holes.... Let's see what ifixit finds behind those grills... If it's nothing then Apple really has reached an all time new low.

They damn well better have put a speaker behind one and microphone behind the other!
Here we go : http://www.apple.com/iphone-7/specs/
There is one microphone behind both grill and one speaker behind the right one.
Here you can see there is no wasted space and there is no room for a second speaker or jack on the bottom of the device : http://www.apple.com/iphone-7/
Finally, just google image of iPhone edge, 3G, 3Gs, 4, 4s, 5, 5s : all with a false speaker grill on the left.

Right, I was thinking the same thing. I was waiting for Phil to say that the audio coming out of the new dongle was even better quality and sampling rate than the old analog port helping to sell the idea of the new lightning headset.

Why would you sell a feature that literally no one can detect in a double blind test?

If you would understand anything about audio, you wouldn't make such comments.
1. There is no digital audio. At some point you have to go analog. If it happens inside the phone or inside the headphones doesn't matter as long as we are looking the same DAC.
2. Apple and Beats headphones are pretty average and not worth their price.
3. Wireless means losing quality.

Hmm, I've been an audiologist for 22 years, so I think I know a little bit about audio.

1) Of course there is such a thing as digital audio. Obviously a human needs analog to hear it correctly. And there's a lot to be said for keeping it digital and transferring it as such until the last possible moment before turning it back into sound as we know it.

Why do you think so many outputs on your TV are digital? Digital audio out. Digital optical. HDMI audio.

By leaving it up to the headphone manufacturer to handle the digital to analog conversion, you let them do it on THEIR terms. Rather than handling it in the phone and using an output that, as Apple joked, dates back a hundred years to early telephone exchanges.

2) I never argued that Apple or Beats were superior. I've never owned the latter.

3) Nope. There is no requirement that being wireless means a loss of quality. It depends how information is transferred wirelessly as to whether there is a loss of sound quality.

Bottom line, this is a smart move by Apple. It frees up space inside the phone. It opens the door for better headphone designs in the future. It moves beyond a very dated analog headphone jack.

New chip + improved camera + same form factor = S upgrades.

Apple should have called it the iPhone 6SS.

Or the iPhone 7 ZZZ.

I will agree it is weird to name it the iPhone 7 just because the timeline dictates that. This is the first time the design remained the same with a new number.

Yeah, so.... it comes w/ an adapter & new ones are only $9. You can use ANY studiophile/audiophile headset with no worries.
There is no anything vs. anything. There is only us enjoying our music as we always have...
No need to try to make a "thing" out of it.

So people are complaining that Apple didn't set the price higher, like, because that challenges your expectations? Would it have been preferable if the adapter was set at $£30 so we could shoot Apple down for ripping us all off?
Damned if they do. Damned if they don't.
No, people expected the price to be higher because Apple will be Apple. I'm not complaining about the price of the adapter. I'm shocked because the price is decidedly un-Apple like.

And Apple has been ripping us off with the cost of various adapters and cables that aren't durable. Apple didn't talk about the wall wart included with the 7 plus but I bet it's still the cheap version currently included with the 6, instead of the iPad version that will charge the phone at twice the rate.

iPhone 7 ISIS edition?
Only the black version. The piano black version is too glossy and will be spotted easily by aerial surveillance.

Since Apple is positioning the AirPods as the "introductory product" to the new wireless (jackless) world of audio…. they really should have priced it more reasonably in order to lure enough "adopters".

I understand that the engineering, the W1 chip, is not cheap, but I'm sure they still could have shipped this AirPods (at some small profit) for around $119 or $129. But at a price point of $159….. it will take years for the masses to be "sold" on the wireless audio thing.

Did Apple talk about how these Bluetooth airpods produce better sound quality than other BT headphones? I recall Apple talking about how good their current headphones are but I know otherwise.

The Apple event yesterday made me want an Apple Watch finally. But it made it easier for me to skip this years iPhone. It looks almost identical to my 2 year old 6 Plus, wich is working just fine. But it will be fun to see what next year brings, maybe they'll remove those huge bezels finally. Would be nice to have a 5'5 inch screen in a more portable sized phone. Now that's a worthy upgrade!

Why not USB-C? Why the disconnect between macbook and iOS products? Can't seamlessly switch headphones or chargers between their own products. Sigh!

My thoughts exactly. As a MacBook and iPhone owner the USBc to lightening connection is somewhat annoying. Why have two different small format connectors on the products rather than one?

Surely USBc as a connector for the next generation of headphones would be driven faster if they could connect to new macs, iPhones and PC/android

iPhone update was solid. Water resistant, better camera and big processor speed increase are all great. I'd love to be able to watch Netflix on my iPhone while in the bath :p

New EarPods look terrible. If you're going to make in ear buds why make them look the same as wired earbuds without the cable? And why white? Sure once the iPod's were all white. But why not the colour of the phones?

The price is what it is, given it is more computer than many people have already, or for some people it is their only computer. And for those that use an installment payment plan, it is a brilliant way of getting the latest and greatest and only paying it off if they absolutely want to keep the iPhone and not upgrade.
Wow, I would never have surmised that the price is what it is - thanks for pointing that out.

Just because the processors benchmark faster than a "computer" (by which I assume you mean a mac, pc or laptop) doesn't mean those clock cycles are accessible to the end user except via phone-centric apps with limited functionality.

An instalment plan just means you take longer to pay the high price. That still doesn't mean, in my case, I feel the 7 is value for that money.

Yeah, that's something I hadn't thought of before; good catch!

There have been times, albeit few, where I've gone from the iPhone to the Mac (or Mac to iPhone) with my earbuds before. Now going forward I'd had to carry two kinds of earbuds and/or the adapter to do the same. Not a huge deal to me, but something to consider.

Has there been any positive reviews on the new non-clicky home button? Looks pretty bleak so far.
