Overheating can occur due to any reason. It can be due to charging, applications use, restoring data from iCloud, playing games etc.

Please try to notice when exactly your iPhone overheats, according to that you can do workaround.
 
I live in a tropical country and the average weather here right now is 85+ and humid. I've used my phone to the point of exhausting my battery down to 10% and charging it again while using my phone for calls. I've never experienced it really getting hot.
