I think you may be on to something here.

As you say, you're way more protective over your phone because you don't use any sort of protection. Whereas those who do use cases and/or screen protectors are more careless with their devices because the device is protected and less susceptible to environmental damage.

So maybe they balance each other out? Maybe it results in a very similar level and risk of damage for both parties.

Ps. Even though my phone is protected to the max, I still find myself being careful where I lay it down e.t.c hah
I got a 3GS as a gift from my sister for Christmas once. Had a slight crack in the top right but no big deal.

My sister is a case user and she mentioned when she gave me the phone that she had thrown it against a wall in frustration once. Hard. The case protected the phone she told me.

And there's the thing. She gave no thought about what she did at the time because her mind had already processed the fact that there was a case on the phone.

The fact that the case DID protect the phone only reinforced this in her mind.

I don't use cases. If I throw my ~$900 phone against a wall I am NOT going to have a working phone when it gets done bouncing around. Consequently, there is something in my mind that would go off and warn me.

Good assement of my argument.

or an Apple leather case

I cannot bring myself to buy Apple's cases. They're daylight robbery, horribly over priced. Especially as the leather ones end up looking like complete garbage within 6 months, and every Apple case I've owned has ended up splitting at the seams on the bottom lips.

Good assement of my argument.

The only difference I would say is in purely accidental damage.

Say, for instance, you take your phone out of your pocket and without thinking it drops to the concrete floor. You're likely gonna end up with a pretty badly grazed/dented corner on your phone - seeing aluminium seems to be incredibly soft. Whereas a case would likely deflect any and all damage in that scenario.

Don't know if I can totally agree with that, but you have a point.

The one phone screen I did crack was because I had recently taken allergy medication and was not paying attention. A loud noise went off near me and I reflexively jumped while getting in my car. At the time I had my phone in my hand so it fell and of course impacted in such a way that the screen cracked.

On the other hand, I dropped my iPhone 5 a lot. One of those drops was from waist height on to concrete at dusk. I was trying to juggle a dipstick and use the LED on the phone to see the oil level. Phone landed face down. In stooping to pick it up I kicked it! Which sent it flying on it's face into an area full of decorative rock.

When I finally managed to pick it up I had scuffed up a corner. And that was it. No cracks or scratches.

So, even with accidental damage there's always that factor of chance.

I will NOT however, deny that in this type of instance a case would be of tremendous advantage.

That said, some cases have been known to do the very damage they are designed to protect. There have been a few threads here on MR where scratches have been found because sand or other small particles lodge in between the device and the case. Some people have even managed to crack screens trying to get their device out of their case.

I like to live on the edge and go caseless every now and then.

The iPhone 7 is one slippery fish, but it looks so good.

mine is losing a bit of colour around the ear piece grill, around the camera and on top where the tiny gap between the bezel and the display is.

Why is there such a "big" gap compared to the sides and bottom anyway? Such a dust collector too

What do you mean around the ear piece grill? There is only glass around the ear piece. Do you mean around the speaker grills on the bottom?

I bought a cheap and super slim case for my matte black 7 since I'm OCD about the fingerprints on the back of the phone. I usually go back and forth with using a case and using it naked.

I also tend to take care of my phones too.

Does the matte black feel anything like the silver? I've been using my 7 without a case and it feels anything but slippery in my hands. Point of reference: Since I work in a hospital I'm constantly washing and sanitizing so my hands are very dry.

Does the matte black feel anything like the silver?

Why does this question always seem to come up. The iPhone 7 uses the EXACT same 7000 Series across the iPhone product line, with the exception of the Jet Black model, which uses the high gloss Nine step anozidation/Polishing process.

That said, the Matte black texture has the same feel as the silver does.

Could be because not everybody knows the exact technical details of every iPhone model. Try not to let it bother you so much.

Caseless...... Good Luck
iPhone 7 is to sleak and slippery to avoid dropping it eventually There are many cases that do not take away from the sleekness and offer better grip
Good design would have included a ridge perhaps to grip on too

Being as careful as we can be they can still slip out of our grips and hit the floor. My case has to be minimal. It has to be high quality. Just needs to give me a little grip and look nice. Something like an otter box is way overkill, like the defender, sheesh, yuk. I fully understand some folks have jobs that are maybe dirty and risky for a phone yet they need to keep it with them. Otter box for them.
I think most phones are made slippery on purpose to facilitate sales of other items, like cases. repairs etc. JMO, But think about it, why so slick? Can still be a high end, quality metal backside and not be made so slick. Yet they make it as slippery as a bar of wet soap, no reason for this. And, some with glass on the back! Yikes! I'd never buy one. Wireless charging be damned. I can plug in, I'm not that lazy.
As mentioned several posts back, who leaves a phone on top of a car? Over confidence because of a case?

Too slippery.

Always too slippery.

Amazing how the same was said about the 6/6+/6s/6s+ yet my 6s+ has managed to get through a year and a half with no case and NOT slip out of my hands.

Yes, yes, we are speaking of the 7 matte black here - but the same argument was made for the previous models.

So call these phones slippery if you want and use a case, that is everyone's perogative. I will continue to ignore cries of "It's too slippery" and use my own iPhone without a case.

Surely we all have better things to do than sit on a message board and talk about iPhones? As Donald might say, "Sad!"

I spend my time where I wish and doing what I wish. If others consider that sad or a waste of time that isn't my problem as it's not THEIR time I am wasting - it's mine.

I can waste my own time if I want.

I've had every phone model and used them all case-free at some point. The only phone I've ever broken slipped off my lap and got punted when I tried to save it from hitting the ground with my foot. Never once had one slip out of my hand like a "wet bar of soap".

I've used my matte black 7 plus case less all weekend. Not had a problem. The coming working week though, when I have to go back into the big bad city......?

I love red iPhone back but can't stand the awful front - huge white bezels with additional black lining inside. Lucky couple months ago I purchased iPhone 7 plus and put on it original leather case product red. So no caseless and no compromise. For me best combo of look and safety:)

No it does not, I have the matte black and my wife has the gold. there is a clear difference between them.
The matte black is smoother.
