For those who didn't use a case. Any scratches on the apple logo ?

Zero. I don't set My iPhone down on hard surfaces without a case intact. And I rarely, if ever, use a case. I prefer just the iPhone by itself.

Don't you use a sleeve or anything? Do you put your phone on the table or put something underneath it?

It's usually in my pocket or on a microfiber cloth. Something usually soft that prevents scratches. But I never set my iPhone on hard surface by itself.

The phone is so much nicer without a case, just wish I could do it regularly. Just feel nervous when I use it outside incase I drop it. Maybe next iPhone I will and just take out Apple care

To slick for me. Have a nice leather minimal shell case that gives it just enough grippiness to be able to feel comfortable it won't slip. Makes it look better as well and levels out the cam hump so nice and smooth on a flat top surface.

Surely all iPhones are meant to be used caseless? I can't believe the design team want people to cover them in a cheap rubber case that looks like a cassette tape.
I'm pretty sure the iPhone design team recognizes the reality that some people will want to add a case, whether it be for design, vanity, protection, or other reasons.

A case can add a level of personalization to a mass-produced device that is meaningful to the owner.

Heck, the simple fact that Apple offers the iPhone in multiple color choices is strong indication that they are aware of the fashion/personalization/vanity component of product purchase decisions. It's not a Ford Model T that only comes in black.

In that sense, your smartphone's appearance is part of your personal appearance, in the same way that your clothes, shoes, jewelry, eyewear, haircut, etc. reflect something about you.

Why are you wearing the clothes on your body today? Your wristwatch? Eyeglasses? Makeup? Haircut? Few people in today's society solely use pragmatism or budget to decide such matters.

Only 2 things would lead me to use the phone naked. 1. If suddenly out of nowhere I get a deep scratch on it which happens. 2. I get bored and decide YOLO

If Apple thought it was cost effective to make a phone that didn't need a case to protect it in falls, don't you think they would, so that other people could see that iphone users were using an iphone?

Old post, I know. But people will always use cases. Regardless if you marketed the phone as being "100% scratch, drop, shatter proof. There is NO WAY you could DAMAGE this phone" people would still go out and buy a case the same day they get the phone. It's partly because of how damn expensive a smart phone is, it's this inherent belief that we should do everything we can to protect something that has great value (a high price) regardless of whether it's a logical thing to do.
[doublepost=1486727650][/doublepost]I did actually manage to find a really nice, very slim case for my 7 Plus when I got it. I can't remember the brand but it's definitely adds a slightly grippier surface to the phone too. So best of both worlds for me, I think. Besides, I tend to worry more about the shiny Apple logo on the back. They seem to be quite easily scratched if my experience with a 5s and 6 Plus serves me.

I've just learned the hard way. I had a clear rubbery case with a slight lip on it. I dropped my phone no more than 3 feet but it must've landed flat on a small object (it was dark). I picked it up, wiped a few drops of rain off of it and the screen was shattered.

I've had iPhones for a good number of years, dropped them from higher heights and they've been fine.

So I've now got a tech21 case with a bigger lip and a belkin glass screen protector (fitted Instore)

I was gutted. At least they could repair / replace the screen.

I've had my matte black iPhone 7 for about a week. I initially had the Apple silicone case on it, but I really missed seeing the beauty of the phone's design and materials. So for the last two days, I ditched the case and have been carrying my iPhone 7 naked. I am reasonably careful, but I am not babying it by any means. And using this phone naked makes a world of a difference for me. It's so light, sleek, and beautiful. And the matte black finish does not seem to scratch at all. I was seriously considering getting the jet black, but I think I made the right choice.

Glad that works for you. However, I find them a tad to slippery so I use a case.

You also forget personalization. Not everyone wants their devices to look like everyone else's. I have an slim orange leather case, not just to add some grip and protection, but also because I love how orange leather looks and how my phone suits me.

Well, let me tell you. I had the same thoughts but found the phone to be so slippery. Not long after it slipped from my pocket, hit the ground and for the first time I had a broken screen. Haven't repaired it yet. Just bought a case for it now.

Eh. I'm not breaking a $900 phone lol. Nuud life proof was recently released too

So the lesson learned here is…use a case with a bigger lip on it?

No offense. But your device looks the same as everyone else who bought the case you did and uses it.

If there is no personalization to using a phone without a case the same can be said for all those using the same case.

Your odds of running into someone who is using the same case are probably not high though, so I am betting it's that fact that allows you to feel as if you've personalized your phone with this case when you really haven't - at least not among all those that bought it.

It's amazing the lengths that case owners will go to in justifying their purchases.

Personally, I don't care if anyone uses a case. It's a personal decision. I just don't buy many of the reasons given to justify why.

Yeah…see, I also have a ~$900 phone. No case. Been a year and a half and it's been fine. No damage.

My iPhone 5 is still going without a case. It's not trashed either. Neither is my wife's iPhone 5.

So, it wouldn't follow from your statement, based on my own personal experience, that because one did not use a case a device would automatically be damaged.

Perhaps a case is necessary for you, but that doesn't mean those of us who do not use cases will automatically have damaged devices because we aren't using cases.

No offense taken, but you are looking at a global view. Yes, globally, my phone now looks like a few other people, but locally (as in, the people I see and interact with) my phone is unique and looks how I want it to look. Like wallpapers, a little personalization goes a long way toward a feeling of differentiation and expression. We are humans after all.

Cheers!

Mine's in a case and there are scratches on the Apple logo. None that are that visible but under bright lights there's a ton.

I agree. I tend to look globally, or at least in a larger geographical area because many of my online friends are from various parts of the world. Which is not to say that I get out of my own immediate area at all.

Along the same lines though, I change my ringtones for the same reason you use this case. Your device stands out visually, mine stands out audibly from the sea of iPhones when I get a call, message or notification.

However, I would argue that my device also stands out visually. When it comes to the groups of people I am around and the places that I am the majority of the time my devices are the only ones without a case.

But again, it's a personal decision. You like what you use and that's all that matters.

Most likely because of the microscratching a lot of cases cause. Ironic.

According to Apple, all iPhones have always been meant to use caseless. That's why they didn't even start making cases until the iPhone 5 (unless you count the iPhone 4 bumper). If I remember correctly they didn't even sell third party cases in Apple Stores for the first couple generations because they expected people to go caseless.

Meh, the 5/5s/se works fine caseless. The 6/6s/7 is too darn slippery for it. I finally gave in and purchased a leather case for my 7+ because I was tired of it sliding around when I was trying to use it standing on its side in bed or whatever. Meh.

And now they even sell screen protectors AND "professionally" install them!

And yet I've managed to get through a year and a half with my 6s+ and no case.

No dings, dents, scratches or cracked screens.

I guess we all need to redefine slippery because this common argument from those who use cases flies in the face of the common experience of many of those not using cases.

I've heard they do that now.

Apple will continually and consistently lose a sale from me on that as it's a product I will never buy.

It's really not that complicated. Each of us have different hand sizes, grips preferences & strengths, textures, and chemistries. When holding a matte polished sliver of metal, what may be slippery to one person may not for another.

There is nothing wrong with cases. There is nothing wrong with not using a case. Some people like their devices "as is", some people like/need extra grip, protection, and/or personalization.
