The iPhone is thin enough already. I don't want to have to buy new headphones just for the pleasure of having an iPhone.
I have had every iPhone made...but I will skip the iPhone 7 if they remove the headphone jack just to make it thinner.

If it's all wireless, how am I supposed to listen to music while being on airplane mode and not violating any FAA law?

It's exactly the same. You're skating to where the puck is, and not where the puck will be. Forget where Bluetooth technology is currently, and imagine where it will be in the future, especially if that future is driven by necessity to replace the 3.5mm jack. All of your complaints will get better, and eventually nonexistent The bottom line is that the future of audio is wireless. All things being equal, would you rather be tethered to your equipment with a wire, or have the freedom to go anywhere?

And how exactly will you not be able to use a wired headphone at all? There will still be a Lightning jack, and with an inexpensive inline adapter, of course you can use any headphone you want.

My MacBook Pro no longer has an Ethernet connector, I have to use an adapter. And neither does my Roku box. My iPad and iPhone don't have Ethernet connectors, and I don't even have the option to use an adapter with them. So no, not all devices have the option for both Wifi and Ethernet, and the list that does is dwindling every year. Besides, desktops and gaming consoles are fixed devices. It's not even the same use case as a mobile device, which is what the essence of a headphone is.

And why can't they have both? Because in part what's motivating them to remove it at this juncture is to free up over 184 cubic mm of internal space presently occupied by the redundant 3.5mm single purpose jack. That's a huge amount of space in a device as constrained as the iPhone, which could be better used for new technologies, or a larger battery, without having to make the phone any bigger, all of which keeps them competitive with Android, and Samsung.

Skating to where the puck will be? I don't see how wireless will change the future. Will music producers go and switch away from their wired pro studio monitors to some wireless pair that has audio lag and connection issues? No. This move isn't on the same level as getting rid of flash or Floppy Drives. Not everyone back then used flash or floppy drives, but nearly EVERYONE uses 3.5mm headphones.

Being free from wires? More like restricted from using any non-Apple device with a pair of lightning headphones that I had to drop an extra $50 to get. I also have no desire to use an adapter. Why would I want to spend $20-30 on an adapter so that I can have to worry about losing or breaking it? Adapters are meant to be used in case you need extra functionality, such as a Lightning to HDMI or SD Card reader to Lightning. They are not meant to complete a device's functionality that should have been included in the first place. Kind of like a video game that releases 1/4 of the content for full price and then expects you to pay another $50 to get the rest of the game (DLC) that should have been included in the original price. (Star Wars Battlefront reference)

The limitations of this jack are almost not worth even mentioning. How about instead of removing the jack, we make the iPhone a tiny bit thicker to accommodate a larger battery or added sensors instead of removing a piece of core functionality to do that, while also shaving even more thickness off this device? The device is already thin enough!

In the end, I guess we can agree to disagree. You believe that wireless is the future and the port isn't needed, and that's just fine. :)

I think its a bit early to remove the headphone jack...calling it a headphone jack underplays
that the jack does more than output to headphones...what about outputting to other units?
I use the line in to my bass amp head to practice..so I'll need an adapter?

What's the point of stupid usb c port headphone and charge?
and Why would they waste their resources on making it thinner?
I wish instead they were focused on functionality..developping a better battery or at least improving it,addong more internal memory for entry model and a high quality OLED display instead of these outdated and pale IPS screens.

Fair enough mate.

But do you really think in 20 years that we will still be using the 3.5mm jack? It's simply not going to be that way. It will be wireless. This is the next step. IF you can't see that then you either don't understand tech, don't want to accept change, are being contrary for the sake of it or have recently invested in headphones that use 3.5mm jack. The last is unfortunate, but not the end of the world.

Why wouldn't you want one less port on the phone? IF they go to wireless charging, what's the problem? I get it makes our old headphones kind of obsolete (I've got a nice pair of noise cancelling and in ear headphones), but I understand that tech moves forward. I have to accept this as part of the price of wanting the latest tech.

Change is good when it does more than add more profit to a company only, that's ALL this is going to do.

Ask yourself this, do you never want better battery life on the iPhone but just want a constantly thinner device?

And in 30 years people will most likely be able to have cybernetic parts implanted by choice so it's a moot point. But currently apart from more profit for Apple there is no technological reason for Apple to remove the headphone jack and make an even thinner phone.

Wireless headphones are currently a loonngg way off quality wise to wired ones, as stated by several other members here with expensive sets.

I would have to part ways with Apple if they pulled a move like this. And I've been a huge Apple fan since the early 2000s. But I would legit go out and buy an Android phone if they did that.

It would be the beginning of the end of consumer confidence in Apple.

Lol yeah right.
Th th this is the last strahhh. The 3.5 was mah breaking point.

See you in line for the iPhone 7. Save me a spot.

Still not sure about this one. Why include the 3.5mm headphone jack on the Retina MacBook and then drop it from the iPhone so quickly after? Especially since the only other jack on the MacBook is the USB-C connector.

The answer is simple.....so you can upgrade to the next model when they do remove it. Apple is in the business of selling hardware.....;)

What are you talking about? Electronics (including Bluetooth) aren't even disallowed during take-off and landing anymore. Even before that Bluetooth was allowed (just not during takeoff and landing).

Directly from the horse's mouth:

https://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/news_story.cfm?cid=TW189&newsId=15254

Relevant quote:

"You can also continue to use short-range Bluetooth accessories, like wireless keyboards."

Note the word "continue".

But, regardless... Bluetooth is 100% allowed on flights at all times in the US.

I will only be okay with the 3.5mm Jack removal if the following rumors are also true:

  • The iPhone 7 is waterproof
  • The iPhone 7 has wireless charging
  • The iPhone 7 includes either lightning headphones or an adapter
If any of these are missing, I'd rather have the 3.5.

On a serious note. I have gone through 4 lightning charging cords so far. Friends have asked to borrow mine for the same reason. The only really scary part for me is depending on a lighting cord for more than one thing. Charging AND headphones?

That's really where Apple is going to gouge the consumer.

"in an effort to make the device even thinner than the iPhone 6s"

The question is who is asking for this? Thinner phone means thinner battery and about the same battery life we've been getting lately.

Derek is asking for this:

jokes aside...

you know how when you look a pictures of old/older phones and they look so big and bulky?
well, one day you'll look back at an iPhone 6 and it's going to give the same feeling..

if that happens in the future then that future phone will be practically invisible lol.

This will simply make people mad. Not something you want to do when you're trying to get people to pay $700+ for a phone in a market where prices are falling all the time. Bad move by apple if this actually happens imo.

Not just for the consumer, but for the company, too.
I agree, eliminating the headphone jack is a mistake. A big one. Look around outside of the walled garden of worshippers... Disdain for Apple is building, stock performance can't be blamed on China, there's change in the wind. This isn't as simple as removing the DVD drive from the MBP, Apple is pushing their luck with this move.

I'm actually glad I got the 6s, I really don't want more new accessories and new adapters to buy. I'm happy with the current headphone jack and lightening cable on the 6s.

I'm with you. I have zero interest in an adapter to give me functionality I already have. Or crappy bluetooth headphones that I hope I remember to charge before a flight. Been there, done that.

If this is what's announced, no question I'll upgrade my 6 to a 6s this fall and skip the 7.

isn't it extremely early for iphone 7 rumors?
I don't think Tim Cook even knows how exactly the iphone 7 will turn out to be

Apple's iPhone 7 may feature wireless charging and a thinner waterproof body with no headphone jack, according to a new report from Fast Company that is in line with previous iPhone 7 rumors from the Asian supply chain.

Citing a source with "knowledge of the company's plans," Fast Company says the iPhone 7 will not include a headphone jack in an effort to make the device even thinner than the iPhone 6s. The device will also "very likely" be waterproof and support some form of wireless charging.

Apple is said to be working with Cirrus Logic to adapt the audio chipset in the iPhone to work with the Lightning port. With no 3.5mm headphone jack, the Lightning port, which is currently used for charging, will also be used to transmit sound to wired headphones. The chipset may also include new noise-canceling technology to remove background noise during music playback and phone calls.

According to Fast Company's source, Apple may not ship Lightning-connected EarPods alongside the iPhone 7, instead opting to sell noise-canceling Lightning-connected headphones separately under its Beats brand. It is not clear if that means the iPhone 7 will come with no EarPods or if Apple will ship standard EarPods with some kind of adapter.

While Fast Company's source sounds sure of the removal of the headphone jack, there is a caveat about the potential inclusion of wireless charging technology and waterproofing. Apple is said to be working on these technologies at the current time, but Fast Company warns that the features could be pulled ahead of when the iPhone 7 goes into production.

Wireless charging is a feature that has been long rumored for potential inclusion in the iPhone and it's certainly technology that Apple has been exploring for many years, based on patents and earlier iPhone and Apple Watch rumors. A waterproof iPhone 7 body made from a new non-aluminum composite material is a rumor that first surfaced a few months ago. Further rumors have suggested the new material will also allow Apple to do away with the prominent antenna bands that were included on the iPhone 6s.

The removal of the headphone jack was first reported by Japanese site Mac Otakara and has since been backed up by a supply chain rumor, but Apple has been laying the groundwork for the elimination of the jack for several months. In 2014, the company introduced a new MFi program to allow third-party manufacturers to develop headphones that connect to iOS devices over Lightning, paving the way for Lightning-equipped headphones like the Philips Fidelio M2L.

Mark Sullivan, who penned today's rumor, has a bit of a mixed track record in the pieces he's written for Fast Company and VentureBeat. His sources accurately predicted some iPhone 6 features like the Qualcomm MDM9825 LTE chip, but he also reported that Apple was working with Swatch to develop the Apple Watch, a rumor that turned out to be untrue.

Apple's iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are expected to be released in September of 2016. Along with the above-mentioned rumored features, the device will also include an upgraded A-series processor and it could include features like an improved camera. Other rumors specific to the iPhone 7 Plus have suggested it could include a 256GB storage option, a 3,100 mAh battery, and 3GB RAM.

If there is wireless charging why even have a lightning port?

Ive must have nightmares at night......

Must make iPhone thinner must make iPhone thinner must make iPhone thinner..

They are waaayyy too obsessed with thinness for no reason or gain.

Their is no real reason what so ever to remove the headphone port apart from for Apple to make even more profit, people should really realise this, a set standard used for years and years and Apple want to change it when no one has been asking for it to be changed. In fact I remember devices that ditched the traditional headphone jack and provided adapters and they never did too well.
Sony also manage VERY VERY well to make their devices fully watertight with both fully exposed USB AND headphone ports so that is no reason either.

Is it really that hard for Apple to listen to it's customers and actually give MORE battery life? Not the same or less battery life just to accommodate a thinner phone?
You've just echoes every sentiment from their "customers" over the last 25 years. And like them you are wrong. Many people want thinner and lighter phones but that's not the point. The point is that as soon as they make phons thinner (hint: they will and so will everyone else) you will want one just like everyone else. That's what Apple does and that's what their customers do and the that's what their competition does. The day Apple makes a thicker phone for a few extra hours of battery life is the day I bail out because no one will be pushing the industry towards the future some of us know we already want.
