I agree completely. Glossy finishes are different process and to create a manufacturing step to accommodate one glossy color would seem inefficient and would frankly take too much of a hit to the margins to implement so this is a no-go in my mind. That is unless, they are introducing glossy finishes in other colors across many product lines...
on 2nd thought - if this new colour is legit - I think Apple will retire the existing space gray colour. I don't think anyone would go for the space gray option - if this new black is released.

Good, more colours is important. Don't want everyone walking around with identical phones. Just black and white was ok for the early days , but Apple now have hundreds of millions of iPhone users not a few million and when you have that big a customer base more choices is the right thing.
Who really cares that much. We cover at least half of it with a case anyways.

It would look cool, but I'd rather see that dark blue if I had to pick one. It's about time the black front iPhone got a color other than "(increasing in lightness) Space Grey).

See, here's how Apple could freak everyone out. Do a PVD coating in synthetic diamond.

They could do any colour of iodized aluminum underneath. Glossy vs matt finish is just part of the finishing process. Black should be glossy IMHO.

Because that's the answer. Apple use materials that are unsuitable so I have to pay to buy a protective cover (which will also scratch).

The thing is, if the phone was stainless steel it would look more like the rose gold Apple Watch which actually looks pretty good. But I get what you're saying, pink aluminum looks hideous.
The iPhone should've stayed Black and White, screw options.
