I have explained, at length, why Apple removed the headphone jack. Money doesn't mean you can change the rules of physics. Either he removed the waterproofing or just messed up his barometer. One of the two.

Don't want to be pedantic, but iPhone is water resistant - not waterproof. And do you mean to say that no smartphones exist in the market that have a headphone jack, and still offer similar or better water resistance as iPhone 7 (and now 8 and X)?

None have that and the extra parts that Apple has in the newer iPhones.

I'm all for team iPhone over Samsung, but you can't simply ignore Samsung for doing exactly that (a water resistant iPhone 7 comparable phone with thin bezels, wireless charging, and a headphone jack): http://www.samsung.com/global/galaxy/galaxy-s8/performance/

Oh how I wish it didn't run Google spyware.

The move to eliminate headphone jacks was to push people towards wireless headphones. Specifically Beats and AirPods. More revenue to show in quarterly numbers, with less reliance on iPhone. The whole "taking up internal space" narrative fits well with their story, but once you look at what the competition is able to do, you realize it's just Apple's "magical/courageous narrative" at play

The iPhone has something the Galaxy S8 doesn't have. I say this as a guy who is using the S8Plus today and a 7Plus as well.

That taptic engine makes a difference.

I agree, I love the taptic engine. But iPhone 6S had a previous version of it, which I think suited my needs. I don't see the 7 as much of an improvement in haptics than the 6S. I would have personally preferred the headphone jack over the 7 taptic engine.

The samsung also offers haptic feedback, but not as accurate as taptic engine. 6S was the right balance IMO... headphone jack + taptic engine. They could have easily made an iphone water resistant with a headphone jack. Removal of headphone jack has nothing to do with water resistance - it's already been tested

It's a combination. I could explain how it barely has anything to do with water resistance if you'd like.

I don't think I understand what you're saying here... I was just replying to your earlier comment where you said that the guy who put in a headphone on the iPhone 7 messed up water proofing or barometer. I'm saying that does not have to be the case. Headphone jacks and barometers still work with water resistant phones, which it seems now you're in agreement with.

The (popular) theory I believe is that Apple chose to remove the headphone jacks to encourage sales of wireless headphones. Not so that they can improve the haptic feedback with taptic engine, or improve water resistance, etc.

You know what they say about just blindly trusting the wisdom of the masses. The only way this could be a cash grab is if you think they designed the taptic engine around the idea.

Let's go through the reasoning.

When you open up the iPhone 7, not Plus, you see that it's pretty packed. There's a small amount of space, but not enough for a jack. Even the guy who was able to fit one in there, being forced to wedge the Taptic Engine sideways, couldn't keep the barometer. Well, more accurately, he couldn't keep it working if he wanted water resistance.

So you either don't have a barometer that works or you have to get rid of the water resistance. Either that, or they could have had both and no taptic engine. Those are the only choices they had.

Also, he did damage the water resistance on the basis that he did a rush job and did little to seal the haphazard hole he made.

For those that think Apple is trying to make money on the dongle. Funny how they are including it with all new iPhones. Both 8 and X come with it as well as the 7.

Clear as day. Free wired headphones cost money. AirPods have a created a new revenue stream for them. They're under an enormous amount of pressure to continue to deliver strong quarters. Absolutely nothing to do with making the product better. When you start making decisions like that, that's when the company starts to slip.

Approaching 200 posts with this, obviously hit a nerve :p. I'm still disappointed with the loss of the audio jack. There have been a few times when I've wanted to listen to a podcast with my earpods and charge the phone at the same time. I haven't seen very well designed adapters for this use case, anyone here have?

if steve jobs were around he'd tell you that you're listening to podcasts wrong (just like he told users they were holding their phone wrong when apple messed up the iphone design and hands were blocking the wireless signal).
