Nope; it is quite possible to get good reception in rural areas without CDMA. Most countries were smart and avoided CDMA in the first place.

CDMA is a superior technology to GSM and the reason most countries use GSM is that CDMA hadn't been invented yet.

CDMA should no longer exist. It's literally one of the oldest technologies ever, yet companies like Verizon still use them? So goddamn evil.
You don't seem to understand the meaning of the word "literally" (or possibility "technology" or "old") - the age of CDMA is dwarfed by that of fire, the wheel, levers and pulleys, the printing press, steam engines, railroads, automobiles, radio, television, radar, computers, the transistor...

Janet is saying that yes you can use a new Verizon iPhone 7 on any carrier you like, but you have to provide account details when ordering online and it comes with a Verizon SIM for the account you told them. If you use a friend's account to do this then your new iPhone 7 will activated as your friend's phone number and their old SIM card will be deactivated. You can then give your new SIM card to your friend and put your AT&T SIM card in your iPhone. This is a very messy solution as they don't sell a sim free model at this time. You can't just lie without having access to a Verizon account.

If you go to a brick and mortar Apple Store it is the general belief that you can buy a CDMA iPhone 7 sim free but there has not been an official word on this yet.
Correction:

When you use friend's VZW account details and finally receive the phone, do not turn it on to avoid activation. Instead, take out the Verizon SIM while the phone is turned off, then insert your current AT&T/Tmobile SIM. Finally, turn it on to activate. Friend doesn't have to do anything.

This this decision involve courage as well?

Seriously though, why go back to making 4 different phones? Last year was great because you could get any of these devices unlocked and it would work on any network. I bought an unlocked phone from Apple last year and I've used AT&T/Sprint/Verizon on it. I haven't used T-Mobile yet but don't care to either.

I'm not sure if anyone has discussed this but I'm not going through 9 pages to find out. I did search the thread for "VoLTE" and didn't find anyone talking about this, so I at least made an effort.

Anyway, as mentioned, the AT&T and T-Mobile models don't have CDMA radios, but will they still work on Verizon on just LTE? And would VoLTE work?

Oh really? Damn, I was just hoping to purchase the phone outright tonight and not worry about it. Here's a screen shot that got my hopes up when I choose the Sprint option. Notice that it says the phone is unlocked.

What worries me is that 'connected' word. In the case of T-Mobile, it says 'with T-Mobile sim'.

And this makes the whole thing confusing... if you are paying for the phone in full... then what does the 'connected' mean when it says unlocked before? Either the phone is unlocked or not but then, when Apple starts selling the unlocked version of the phone (no carriers along), how is that different from this case here when it says unlocked as well.
Or this is just some marketing stuff because people need to see their favourite carrier otherwise they get lost?

But have you actually done this. I've seen much speculation but no one who has actually purchased a Verizon phone at full price, then was able to put in an ATT/Tmobile SIM to activate it. Certainly once activated, the phone is unlocked and can be used with an ATT SIM, but it's the activation part that is crucial. I can only assume a Verizon phone will be requiring a Verizon SIM/account to activate it on the Verizon network before it can be used.

You assume well. If the process for the iPhone 7 is the same as for the iPhone 6S (this one can be tested now already) then one needs an account with ATT, Sprint or Verizon in order to buy a phone under their 'trademark' on Apple.com. Only the T-Mobile one is the only one allowing the customer to proceed with the process and add the phone to the bag, and of course, pay for it.

I haven't seen this asked, what would be the lowest ADDITIONAL cost to get a Sprint/Verizon iPhone 7, if we want to continue with our AT&T/T-Mo account, and don't want to risk using a friend's Sprint/VZW account?

I mean, what's the cheapest dollar amount to open a brand new Sprint/VZW account, and then cancel the subscription as soon as possible? I imagine we'd have to pay one month subscription? I also imagine Sprint would be a lot cheaper than VZW?

I'd like start with the Apple iPhone Upgrade Program (IUP) this year. Will there be a problem if I select a Sprint IP7, create a new (temporary) Sprint account in the process, and then when I receive the phone just switch to my AT&T SIM card right away (and close the Sprint account)? Come next year when I want to upgrade to the 2017 iPhone, will the IUP still think I'm on Sprint and give me hassle?

EDIT: Hmm, it looks like the the apple.com (or Apple Store app) buying process doesn't offer an in-line method to create a new carrier account on the spot. So I'd have to create a subscription account at sprint.com or Sprint store first? But would Sprint let me start a plan subscription without choosing any phone?

How do you get the Verizon phone? I've read you need to have a Verizon account just to buy the Verizon iPhone from Apple even if you're buying it outright.
Nope. I purchased iPhone 6 & 6s+ from Apple Store without activating. Just paid full retail price.

OK here is something I do not understand.
I am with AT&T and don't plan on switching.
Is there any time my AT&T phone will use CDMA on AT&T's network?
I currently have the 6s plus and travel around rural IL WI without ever significant problems
would that change with the 7? Does it ever roam on CDMA without me being aware?
As I am traveling to Scotland in a few weeks will the 7 plus AT&T version work there ?
Thanks ahead of time as I want to be safe ordering!!

I guess if there are no solid solutions we'll all see tonight.

I'm going to attempt to pre-order the Verizon at full price and if they ask for account number I'll just get the T-mobile.
this is the same situation that I am in. I bought the 6s+ (tmo) last year and it works fine on my VZW account. But this year all this talk about it not supporting CDMA causes me to worry because my account type will not allow me to preorder online. Weird.

Well somebody in this thread did say that IF they do end up asking for Verizon information to purchase an unlocked Verizon phone at full price, if you use a friends' information, just don't turn on the phone with the sim card inside and everything should be ok.

AT&T phones never supported and never will support CDMA, Verizon started supporting GSM phones awhile back, that is why your Tmob GSM phone works with them.

Enter your imei in the link below and it will tell you whether or not it will work on VZW.

https://www.verizonwireless.com/bring-your-own-device/

I entered my gsm 6s+ imei and my ATT Moto X and they all came back as positive.

Your Tmobile Iphone was never CDMA.

I am so lost. I am a current AT&T customer and own my iPhone 6. I'm on no upgrade program or contract.
I plan on buying my phone for full price. It says unlocked but connected to AT&T.
Am I getting the iPhone 7 that will have the CDMA bands?

Absurd if not, buy full price with no contract obligation or upgrade program. I should be able to get a phone and use it only carrier.

Does the IUP require a post-paid subscription line, or will a prepaid account also work? Is there a way to buy a prepaid Sprint or VZW line without buying a phone at the same time? On the Sprint postpaid website I couldn't seem to start a new plan account without also buying a phone...

You guys realize CDMA is only used if LTE isn't available, and that it sucks?

Not a big deal. And the Intel modem might be better anyway.

I'm with AT&T. So no CDMA, no 64GB, and I have a chit load of headphones that won't work. Not buying, my 6 works just fine and it's paid for.

Right now every iPhone 7 comes with a SIM preinstalled that is linked to your phone number. The phone is still unlocked and you can throw away that new sim and use whatever sim you like. In the near future they will offer a sim-free model and that's the one we all want. You don't have to give any account details for a sim free model.

Edit: apparently the TMobile one comes with a new sim that is not associated with your number. My point remains the same that you can't buy a CDMA iPhone 7 without it coming with a sim that is linked to your number unless maybe you can sign up for a new Verizon account and then cancel it when the phone gets here. They don't offer the sim free model online. Rumor has it that you will be able to buy the sim free CDMA version iPhone 7 in store on the 16th but I don't see any official info on that anywhere.
