And again, they were the first ones to have an integrated solution that actually worked well to become basically ubiquitous. Anyone was free to develop their own or buy what was out there and tweak it and integrate it, and yet no one did it anywhere close to well or useful until Apple did.

I think the point you're missing is that yes, Apple were doing a great job on the iPhones and bringing in new and useful tech... But now the others have caught up and are surpassing Apple while they rest on their laurels. It's happened to all big companies at one point or another and none are immune; Sony, Microsoft, Nokia, Blackberry - Apple will soon follow suit if they get too complacent.

No, I get that point. It's just that people believe it already happened--the complacent part and basically being doomed--when it's mostly that others have started to actually doing their part that they haven't really been doing well enough before.

Yeah, I think much of the concern is coming from these leaks - the iPhone 6/6S was "OK", perhaps a step back design-wise for a number of reasons compared to the iPhone 4/5 (antenna lines, camera bump, quite unergonomic - power button opposing volume buttons, not comfortable and slippery in hand etc) so people were expecting much from the "7" in the face of much improved design from the competition, especially Samsung.

The 6 design was the first big jump for Apple in screen size, at least to the extent the form had to really adjust rather than just get longer so some leeway for minor design details should be accepted, the old iPhone form and function doesn't sit quite as well in the larger shape though. The 7 could (and probably should) be where Apple really raises the bar again... But, all the leaks seem to point to a "6SS" rather than the true next generation. For a company of Apple's size, wealth and previous design talent this is quite a disappointment for many, myself included, should the rumours be true.

I know when my contract is up in September that it'll be the first time since the 3G I may be seriously considering the Android competition if the leaks about the 7 are true.

Yeah , right.
I will surely upgrade to android.....

But all we are talking about is design.
What if iPhone 7:
- has a much improved camera better than the android competition
- is water- and dust proof.
- has a better screen with better blacks/colors and higher res and true tone added.
- has an even better Soc.(the a9 is still one of the fastest if not the fastest to date)
-other new features that didn' t leak yet.

Etc, etc.

Than all we are talking about some edge screen that had no real word advantages and bezels...
Ok dropping my iPhone, I want an edged screen!
