So only the American CDMA iPhone is a true world phone? All the iPhones sold else where in the world are not. My understanding it only Verizon and Sprint are the CDMA version. The rest are all Intel?

The SIM-Free would have to be GSM and CDMA to work on all carriers. Ergo, the AT&T and the T-Mo are the only ones with the problem.

Tim Cook (the bean counter) is doing the same **** for watches too. The models that got reduced to $269 actually lost the storage box they used to come with before AND lost the charger power brick!! Now you can buy it separately for $19!!!
So Apple put in a faster chip and lowered the price by $80, but put it in a cheapo box and didn't include the charger. I don't see the problem here.

For the iphone, the nice palstic case the headset came in got replaced with cardboard wrap!... I mean this guy will make every cent he can. Mind boggling. Apple will never be like it was under Steve Jobs again.
Is this true???? It's an outrage!

It's not a problem. You're not living in a lab...you'll never notice in the real world. Get out and live your lives

It is if you want to switch from AT&T or T-Mo to Verizon or sell your device next year to someone on Verizon or Sprint.

Again, yes, you can dig out the information. Perhaps if Apple had said upfront: there are two versions of the phone. Go to our website and check it out. But to parse the information, you have to be an expert on wireless. I still do not know, based on their information, if I can use my iPhone 7 in the countries I travel to.

The point, is if they had been upfront about this: there are two versions of the phone, a better and a worse one, at the same price, nobody would have chosen the Intel version. So, they HAD to obscure that fact. It's common sense.
They did and have. I remember seeing it on their website. Now its in the FAQ and states the following:

" Are there differences between iPhone 7/7plus for AT&T and T-Mobile, or iPhone 7/7plus for Sprint or Verizion Wireless?
iPhone offers the same innovative features regardless of the wireless carrier you choose. If you choose AT&T or T-Mobile as your wireless carrier, your iPhone will use 3G cellular technology for voice services and either 3G or 4G LTE cellular technology for data services. iPhone can roam internationally on many GSM carriers around the world. If you buy iPhone with AT&T or T-Mobile, it will not work if you switch to Sprint or Verizon Wireless.

If you choose Sprint or Verizon Wireless as your wireless carrier, your iPhone will use CDMA cellular technology for voice and data services. If you buy an iPhone with Sprint or Verizon Wireless, it will work on AT&T or T-Mobile. An iPhone activated on Sprint or Verizon Wireless also has the ability to roam internationally on GSM networks. For details on LTE network support, please see www.apple.com/iphone/LTE."

I have the Intel modem.

I had not paid attention beforehand, but thought I might as well do a speediest. I am getting 31.15 up, 16.28 down. Comparatively, on wifi I am getting 18.28 up, 7.42 down. Seems it might be time for an Airport upgrade soon.

Why oh why doesn't Apple single source these key components,

Nothing ticks off a customer more than the feeling that their phone is performance-disadvantaged to other same model iPhones due to chance.
Its so apple doesnt become a slave to qualcomm and helps keeps the prices down for all of us

Is Intel charging Apple less than Qualcomm?

I believe they are, if I recall the stories correctly (probably from MacRumors), Qualcomm charges a lot for the CDMA "stuff" that the AT&T phones don't need.

so in other words, everyone should get the CDMA/Verizon model even if they're on AT&T?

If I'd been purchasing at full price, I definitely would have (solely for resale value). But I did the AT&T upgrade (free iPhone 7 for a 6) so I wasn't going to complain about the lack of CDMA.

Is there a way to buy an 'unlocked' Verizon iPhone? Would it be as easy as sticking in a chip to get it to work. Although AT&T still locks iPhones to their network :mad::mad::mad:, and iPads too...
Yep either via Apple sim free or full price at Verizon. Only locked if financed and they will unlock after a period of time in good standing. (not sure if it has to be paid in full but prob so) Not as easy as sticking a chip in it tho. They have to unlock it.

SO if you purchase and unlocked iPhone at full pop, does that guarantee you'll end up with the qualcomm or is this not the case?

Thanks in advance
Yep

The SIM-Free would have to be GSM and CDMA to work on all carriers. Ergo, the AT&T and the T-Mo are the only ones with the problem.

This is a US only statement you made. In Europe only the Intel version exists even if bought from an Apple Store without any kind of contract (unlocked). For some reason Europeans roaming to the US don't count. So they only have and only will have the Intel version for sale in Europe.

In this sense, since QC is offered in Japan US and China Only , the intel one is the international edition. I agree with ya

Wow, already the second time Apple dropped the ball with the iPhone 7.

First they put a low-quality memory controller into the 32GB version, which is significantly slower. Now they put a low-quality Intel garbage modem inside. If they had done this consistently for all 32GB models (and only there), one could've said, 32GB are punished twice, once with the crap memory controller, and once with the Intel crap modem. Apple wants to give people a double incentive to buy 128GB or 256GB.
But no, they put the Intel crap modem into all models, even 128GB and 256MB, punishing even those who get the better models. Before those could laugh at the 32GB owners for their poor memory performance, but now they got the short end of the stick themselves. I wouldn't be surprised if they're pissed now, rightfully so, for getting a clearly lower quality product while paying the same as someone who got one with the much better Qualcomm chip.

Does anyone know the reason why Apple decided to go with Intel for some of its modems? Was Qualcomm not able to meet demand? Intel costs less?

That's the only reason. Intel came to Apple and said, "Hey, we know our chips are sh*t, but we'll sell them really cheap!" So Apple took them.

For some reason Europeans roaming to the US don't count.

You can't roam onto CDMA unless your carrier issues you a R-UIM card and supports the ANSI-41 roaming protocol, which no GSM carriers do. Even AT&T, when they were transitioning from TDMA to GSM didn't bother with the interoperability.

There are two models of the phone. An iPhone 7 and iPhone 7+. They have different storage options. They don't have different modem speed options.

They have different bands options, clearly stated on their website.

There will always be variance in supplier parts, it is just being overhyped for no reason just like last years chips.

There are many changes in the industry too. Sprint in 3 years will lose rural Verizon roaming once Verizon finally refarms their 1X spectrum into LTE turning them into a pure VoLTE carrier. Sprint STILL doesn't have VoLTE running and is the lone dog because they have limited spectrum...

They left out the nice box on the series 2 watches as well. The top of the plastic case made a nice place to rest the watch while
charging. I wonder if the ceramics still get the edition charging cases.

I doubt it is US-only. Europe may only have the Intel version, but there are no doubt other countries that need CDMA and would have the Qual version.

Nooo... not really. What I am telling you all is that the QC version can be used ANYWHERE with great success. The Intel cannot. If it could, there would be no need for the different versions.

I get what you're saying here in that most countries will only have the Intel for sale in them, but that doesn't mean that If I am in the US and would like to sell my phone to someone from China (we have a good many Chinese people in my area and I actually sold my 6s plus to a Chinese guy), they WILL care if they plan to take that phone to someplace in China either to live or on vacation, if that place has mostly CDMA coverage.

That, along with (here in the US) the poorer performance if one wanted to switch from AT&T or T-Mo to Verizon or Sprint or any other number of smaller carriers that provide service mostly in rural areas, having the Intel version would be a disadvantage. So, it is unfortunate that Apple chose to sell two versions of this phone in the US. Especially for those of us who paid full price at launch and don't buy on contract.

See what I mean?

Nope. They come with the round charging station that Apple sells for (I think it is) 70 bucks. No more built-in charger for the Edition.

The Edition, SS, and Hermes SS come in the exact same white plastic box. The Hermes has an orange box that it fits inside and the Edition and regular SS have the Apple white box.
