True. Then again, the iPhone would still have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and other means of connectivity. Not to mention using the Lightning port itself for headphones.
BT headphones are nearly as common though. And the good ones are pricy. Lighting headphones have barely even been introduced, and will only work with iOS devices.

So, you mean like the floppy disk?
By the time the iMac came out floppies were completely obsolete at least as far as installing software. They were somewhat useful for transferring files, though better options existed. Really the only reason the floppy held on so long in the PC world was because BIOS makers were reluctant to support anything else.

Actually I remember my experience as a TA for my high school computer class. We initially used floppies for grading papers... oh boy was it a nightmare! Every week you could expect at least one corrupted disk. And then you'd have the students who'd forget to put the disk in and instead save to the hard drive. As anyone who's ever used a computer at school in the last couple decades knows, that data gets wiped as soon as you log out! Eventually we switched to a network drive solution. Far fewer headaches!

as someone who thinks there's no such thing as "too much" storage and have the 128 GB versions of the iPad and iPhone even I think 250 Gb is ridiculous. Especially considering Apple is so sleazy/stingy with storage on their "real" computers. But I'm not one to lecture people on what their computing needs are. It drives me nuts when people think they have a right to question why I want/needed a 64 GB phone/tablet, then a 128 GB phone/tablet. I'm skipping the next few gens of phones and will probably get an 8s in 3 or 4 yrs, but when I do it'll be whatever the max capacity is at the time.

It does not even sound like something to question. If someone wants or needs 64GB-128GB-256GB it is as simple as they likely have a lot of data, future proofing, just in case etc.... Some people hang on to their phones for awhile. Even in 2009 I went with 32GB just in case (good idea as well)

16GB iPhone 6 = $649
64GB iPhone 6 = $749

16GB model outsells the 64GB 5:1

2016...

16GB model = $649
64GB model = $749
128GB model = $849
256GB model = $949 or high estimate $1049

Which one do you think will sell the most? 16GB! Because people see $100 cheaper > any memory size more.

Apple will never ditch 16GB. It's like their Honda civic model of iPhone.

The 64gb is the most popular model by far. IF anything (because I cannot supply actual sales figures) they are 1:1 in sales. The amount of photos people take with their phone, they now realize 64 for 100$ more is worth it.

...bundled with the phone I should hope.

If they do just that I will have no complaints ditching the 3.5mm.

They won't bundle the adapter. Look at the new ipad mini and pro cases (2 pieces), the macbook with separate adapters, and the fact that ipads do not come with headphones. They will assume people will all use wireless headphones so the adapter is not necessary, but an after market option. What they probably will do is include a set of headphones with the lightning instead of 3.5 and that is all. Then say " hey we own beats so these people will then buy more of them. Because we are the only people with headphones to plug into lightning.

Removing the 3.5mm jack would be suicide, even for Apple.

The world is not ready for it. Not everyone even wants wireless headphones, let a lone an adapter on the end of their existing pair. It will push beats though so they will do it. It will sell adapters, headphones with lightning ports and wireless headphones. They try to push the market and be cutting edge with change, however they won't have an iphone that is so revolutionary that people will oversee that type of change.

For the macbook people don't care, because they can buy another model. CD drive is not that big of a deal because you can buy it separate and a lot of people don't need one.

This will be huge as people still complain that their "new iphone has lightning instead of 30 pin still" and they need a new car charger

A phone that is 4.7" is a lot better for viewing its display than the smaller 4". While the 5.5" display would provide even better viewing, it is a bit difficult to put in a pocket.

Is an even thinner phone really necessary? Too thin means it can easily slip out of one's hand or pocket.

As long as Apple is not making it possible to put one's own removable storage card such as a micro SD, the 256GB storage would be preferred for those who use the phone for a lot of photography and video. Last March the price for a 256GB flash drive was $70; today it is available for $60. It makes NO sense to have non-removable storage. It makes even less sense to charge $100 more for each higher storage level.

New devices will be required when the audio and the charging are through the same lightning port. Maybe Apple should move HQ to Georgia from California where the cost of living is much less; then the prices set for phones and other Apple electronics could be less than they currently are.

This practice of adding more features to the effing oversize plus size phone is getting annoying. The video stabilization was bad enough, but if they limit upper tier storage to the shoe box lid size phone I'll be disappointed.

I couldn't agree more. These are the things that make me think about leaving apple land. I do not want that oversized phone to be force fed to me. I tried it THREE times. Its TO BIG.

With Apple pushing iCloud and the need to keep profit margins high, I'm skeptical. The only obvious use for huge storage on a phone is to record long 4K video sessions. There might be reasons why someone recording a lot of 4K video might want to use a dedicated 4K video camera rather than an iPhone.

Apple won't get rid of the piss poor 16 GB.

iPhone 7 pricing:
16GB model = $749
64GB model = $849
128GB model = $949
256GB model = $1049

Just shrink the bezel and I'll be happy. Also make the double tap that shrinks the screen down, also shrink the screen vertically.

This. Make the Plus MUCH more easy to hold with the same size screen= ton more sales of $100 more Pluses.

It's bigger than 5.7" phones right now

I'm hopeful on some of it. I mainly hope they leave the headphone jack and add OIS to the 4.7" phone. Smaller screen size shouldn't mean limited features.

OIS maybe not, but a bigger size should allow for some things that take up space. Right now, they're just using it for battery size.

The 3.5mm audio needs to stay - removing it is stupid.
This anorexia obsession for thinner devices with 1 ports is total BS. It's like the 1st gen macbook air or the new macbook.
Anytime you want to connect 2 things at once you need a handful of adapters!

WAKE THE **** UP apple! Just as you did with later gen. of air.
I'll never buy a device with 1 port!

I disagree here. I think this is step #1. Step #2 will be changing the lightning to a usb-c port. Im all for this progression. I want all phones and all devices to have 1 standard port. usb-c. it will be a bit painful to get there but its for the greater good.

I wish they would make base 32 or even 64 gb, but they won't, since a large portion of their buyers are people who only, and I mean ONLY use their phone for social media, it's sad, using such a powerful and useful device for selfies, but to each his own...

Yeah we all get that - the point is that people get suckered in to buying those ones, then get a poor experience because they can hardly fit any apps/games/photos/videos on them.

Apple is all about that premium experience, but in this case they really don't get one. The cost of that 16GB model compared to the others doesn't really make sense; it's just there to attract poor people and then dump a crappy experience on them.

Bumping the base spec isn't exactly the same as a price drop, and as you can see there is still plenty of room to upsell people on the higher-capacity variants. It likely wouldn't make my particular phone any different/cheaper, but it would make the overall 'iPhone experience' for all iPhone users much better. My friends and family have iPhones: I want them to have a good time with their phone, not get suckered in to buying a 16GB model and then quickly hitting the storage space wall.

It's also sending conflicting messages and is downright embarrassing. They market the iPhone as the "world's most advanced smartphone", but then the base model will be full with a maximum of 33 minutes of recorded video (assuming that's all that was on there - not a single app, song or photo). Can you still claim that when it's so limited on space you basically can't use some of its biggest features?

It feels wrong. If you buy an iPhone 7, you shouldn't really need to tune everything down just to be able to use the device. It's not a mathematical rule, but more anecdotal - 16GB is just not enough to enjoy such an otherwise advanced product.

Phone are already awkward to hold without a case so thinner really does not add anything.

I'm only one person - but I keep my 6 Plus in a wallet case that makes the phone roughly 3x as thick. :D But it also means I don't have to carry a separate wallet - credit cards, bus pass, phone, it's all there in one easy place, just waiting for a thief to steal. :p

Upgrades were a lot better (faster) BEFORE Tim took over. He sees the world with these eyes $_$

Steve Jobs was the kind of guy who would argue with Eric Schmidt about Object-Oriented Programming principles and design.

When I was still at Sun Microsystems, I visited him at NeXT—we did a bunch of deals with him. He was exactly the same way he was at Apple: strongly opinionated, knew what he was doing. He was so passionate about object-oriented programming. He had this extraordinary depth. I have a PhD in this area, and he was so charismatic he could convince me of things I didn’t actually believe.

I should tell you this story. We’re in a meeting at NeXT, before Steve went back to Apple. I’ve got my chief scientist. After the meeting, we leave and try to unravel the argument to figure out where Steve was wrong—because he was obviously wrong. And we couldn’t do it. We’re standing in the parking lot. He sees us from his office, and he comes back out to argue with us some more. It was over a technical issue involving Objective C, a computer language. Why he would care about this was beyond me. I’ve never seen that kind of passion.

At NeXT he built this platform—a powerful workstation platform for the kind of computing that I was doing, enterprise computing. When he came back to Apple, he was able to take the technology he invented at NeXT and sort of slide it underneath the Mac platform. So today, if I dig deep inside my Mac, I can find all of that NeXT technology. Now, this may not be of interest to users, but without the ability to do that the Mac would have died. I was surprised that he was able to do that. But he did it.

He wasn't the tech guy that Woz was, but he cared about technology and it's elegance and purity.

That's the biggest hole in Tim Cook. I don't feel that passion from him whatsoever.

Apple is already setting the Plus models apart with OIS in the camera. If the 7 Plus comes with more RAM than the standard 7, people will go bananas on this forum!
I doubt that will happen, if the 6 and 6S has been any indication.

As much as I love Apple, it seems like they're getting more and more out of touch with what I'd like to see in an iPhone. My ideal iPhone 7 would be:
  • Same screen sizes with an added 4" iPhone mini/"c" model
  • Same thickness, using smaller internals to make way for more battery
  • Leave the headphone jack alone
  • 32/64/128 storage options (or better yet but less likely 64/128/256)
  • 4 GB RAM
  • And most importantly, no feature differences between models – optical image stabilization available on all iPhones
C'mon, Tim: make it happen!

The put features only on the most expensive to get people to buy the most expensive phone. They're smart. They aren't changing that. By the time the 4.7" gets OIS, another new feature will be Plus models only.
