I'm not sure if there are still people who connect their phones to a computer to sync their good old mp3 collection.

Why not? Are you good at math? Did you know that average internet connection in US is 12mb? It will take days to sync 256gb of files from the internet wirelessly. And what if you don't have wifi and rely on your cellular connection that limits you to 2gb of data per month? Then you can just forget about cloud stuff at all.

I recently had to get my mom set up on iCloud Photo Library just to do the optimize storage setting, got her back a few gigs. I probably should reinstall all of her social media apps because they are raking in the cache and miscellaneous files, growing and becoming more and more bloated. It's annoying that I have to do this but she simply just doesn't know better otherwise.

And that's my point... phones will fill up eventually.

More storage is not the magic bullet we think it is.

Being satisfied with my 5s, Apple's obsession with thinness is bordering on crazy. I have also been OK with 16gb as I don't load more music than what I am content to use.

But it's the non-Plus models that desperately need a bigger battery. I hope battery life will be increased even more on these models.

Also, a single connector would generate 2 problems for apple to solve:
1. How to use the headphones while charging
2. Proprietary connector equals to a very limited choice of 3d party headphones ?

That will never happen!!! If Apple makes 32GB default, that will hurt their profit margins by as much as 20-30 percent. Can you imagine the board approve of such a move?
Apple makes a lot more from the 64GB and 128GB models than 16GB so it will not hurt their margins. They also sell a lot of 16GB iPhones to all kinds of people that are happy with cloud storage. The only reason the 16GB exists and will continue to exist is to let them list the lowest priced iPhone to stay competitive. Now that all carriers have dropped the subsidies, it's more important than ever to keep the base price competitive.

That's right! Then let's just make the base storage 8gb and upsell 16 instead
LOL

But since you mention upsell... 16GB --> 64GB is quite a good deal.

It's $100... or a few dollars more per month on a payment plan.

Many carriers now offer device payment plans instead of subsidized contracts. Here is Verizon's for instance:

$27.08/mo - iPhone 6s 16GB
$31.24/mo - iPhone 6s 64GB
$35.41/mo - iPhone 6s 128GB

Are you really gonna cry over an additional $4.16 per month for the next model up?

By the time they do 32GB will be a joke.

Really is, just because they can does not make it a good idea. Phone are already awkward to hold without a case so thinner really does not add anything. Focus on all the other factors.

How thin do they want phones to be? Thin as a credit card?
Yes. I'm not being sarcastic. It's really about weight in the end. Have you ever held a 6+ in your hand for 10 minutes or over your head in bed? It's not that light. If it was about 1-2mm thick and 1/3 current weight, then I would be happier. As it stands now, I never have a problem with battery life so why would I want it to be as thick or thicker? So I can get 3 days instead of 1 1/2 days of battery life?

Apple is about showing us the future and since we all know the future has nothing to do with clunky phones, why set standards so low? I expect a credit card size and weight phone in 5-10 years. We will never get to that if Apple doesn't push for faster, thinner and lighter at every release. Longer battery life will come with processor advances and is more than enough for most right now.

Sci-fi has the answer.

Still not thin enough - Jony told me so. Expect holographically-projected iPhones after the autonomous Apple Car has been implemented worldwide. Always-on Air Siri: Speak “Air Siri; iPhone” into the air, and the holographic iPhone appears in your hand. Voice matched; all cloud-based. I predict 2034, at earliest.

Remove the headphone jack but don't make the phone thinner... Put a better battery, camera, screen, speakers etc...

The phone is thin enough... That fade is over imo

You'll look back at this and laugh in 5 years. Today's iPhones will look obese int he the future.

I remember when people whined about the 4S being thin enough... lol.

Can someone explain why Apple is so fixated on making iPhone any slimmer than it is? There is more loss at hand than any gain. If they really want to make it any slimmer, better of making a bloody iPhone Air.

Maybe they want to sell you an amazing Jony Ive designed $79 Apple Spatula to help with picking it up?

At 256GB, this would make it the first device to actually satisfy serious music collectors since the iPod Classic 160GB. Pretty shocking it's taken this long.

And I think 256GB is the minimum for a device to be taken seriously by graphics media professionals like videographers and photographers. 128GB isn't enough to hold a single full day of heavy shooting with high-megapixel professional bodies.

She isn't putting 23 movies and 900 songs on her phone. That's the under 10% media guzzler.

Again, thing big picture instead of so small minded.

It's even more niche than that. Most "media guzzlers" today stream their music from services like Spotify and Apple Music. Those who keep thousands of songs or videos on their devices must be a minority of a minority.

Just switch to T-Mobile and use Spotify with Music Freedom.

It's getting harder to understand why anyone would go to the trouble of syncing and storing thousands of MP3s these days.

The average consumer can't make that distinction. Apple has released and discontinued 4GB and 8GB iPhones. It's time to do the same to the 16GB version.
Apple salespeople will certainly let the average consumer know about the limitations of 16GB. That's how they upsell.

Also, the average consumer these days is *not* buying his or her first smartphone. Chances are, if they need more storage space they probably already know that.

The iPhone 6S was the final straw with me.

I don't ever even buy the base model iPhone, but the fact that Apple still shafted the base model with 16GB of storage in the year 2015 (!!!) was just too much for me. A 'premium' phone, with a 4K camera......with enough storage to hold about 20 minutes of video, lol. If they are so incredibly uncreative that they can't think of a better way to differentiate the base model from the middle and higher tier versions, then I'm simply not gonna buy it. They could have just gave it 32GB and stuck it with a 1080P camera or something, but no, they made the idiotic choice and I'm betting they've pissed off a huge number of customers, and they can't afford to do that for much longer.

Because there are people who do not live in the US. Not to mention the battery use from all-day streaming.

I'm amazed at the amount of people who are actually excited about the idea of Apple REMOVING features. Yeah, get rid of the 3.5mm jack because only millions of people use it daily! Yeah, get rid of Lightning port that we just bought accessories for! Who needs more storage, more storage is not the answer, 16 GB is enough for my wife/mother/grandpa so it's enough for everyone! You know what other antique technology is used in iPhones? Batteries. They've been around for even longer than headphones with 3.5mm jacks! Apple, remove batteries and make the iPhone thinner! Everybody can connect their phones to a charger non-stop, and if they are old people who can't understand the need for progress (which can be painful at the beginning) they can buy the iHump.
