Looks like they could have put in a headphone jack if they wanted.

We all know it was intentional to get people to spend a lot of money on dongles, expensive apple headphones, more dongles and royalties from manufacturers for licensing the lighting port.
Or it's like the floppy disk drive. Apple is just removing old obselete tech before the rest of the industry has the guts to do so.

I think a teardown of the phone shared on the internet is much more useful to more people than one extra person getting a phone slightly sooner.
As long as it's post the release date. ifixit blew their chances of getting pre-release iPhones because of what Ifixit did before.

I think you can take a little Blu(Ray) pill for that...

3.5mm jack isn't obsolete by the way, there's still no better quality way to transmit audio than a wired connection that never needs charging. Just because Apple tells you something it doesn't make it true.

Yep it's called lightning. Don't just assume I was talking about bluetooth, I was not.

No, you only think it's obsolete because Apple told you. Nobody has ever had a problem with the headphone jack until NOW. Clearly you're easily manipulated.

Nice upgrade!

More efficient processor, too. There should be a noticeable battery performance improvement. Can we now focus on the Macbook Pro, please?

Hopefully in October.

I won't called obsolete but on a device like the iPhone that needs every mm of space it can get for other components the 3.5 jack becomes redundant as the same function can be served by the multi-use Lightning port.

Nintendo did it in 2003 with the GBA-SP. Microsoft did it in 2013 with the original controller of the Xbox One. I'm sure others have done it too, but the story is always the same. They say it's obsolete and this will be better, then it's not. It's always just a cash grab to charge you extra fees for dongles or more for proprietary headsets.

Hopefully in October.

Except it would have fit. This is exactly what Nintendo did in 2003. Except Nintendo's dongle was cheaper, but Apple did give customers the first one for free.

But that stops the phone charging so again we're wired in but have lost a benefit with the 7, unless we buy another dongle accessory... If next year's model has wireless charging as touted then problem solved. Still seems like the 7 is a "get people used to it before launching the good phone" model.

Can anyone please explain why there is OIS on the wide and not long lens?

Maybe they think the 28mm lens will be used more indoors under low-light conditions, while the 56mm will be used to capture sports or portraits outdoors where it's usually sunny?

Or it could be as the other person said: Apple needed to leave something out so they could add a feature next year with little R&D investment.

So? Just charge the phone when you're not using the headphones. Not a hard thing to do.
Wireless charging would solve this non issue though.

No one had a problem with the floppy disk drive either but Apple removed that. Tech can't last forever. It has to be moved on eventually. Either you can accept the march of progress or you can live stuck in the past. Your choice.

I do not have a problem with or without the headphone port. I am just fine with accepting progress.
Are YOU ok with progress? Or are YOU making excuses not to accept progress when it happens?

Floppy was replaced with CD, CDs were replaced with Bluray, and Bluray is getting replaced with streaming services.

What's the successor to the 3.5mm plug? NOTHING. Get over yourself.

I wouldn't use the term "obsolete" but the reality wouldn't be that far off either.

Apple has a plan, and that plan doesn't involve the headphone jack. Heck, they might even have felt that the headphone jack posed a threat to their plans. Hence it had to go.

And that plan clearly goes beyond just selling more adaptors or beats headphones. This is another long term strategic move in motion. I think I know what they are up (positioning the airpods as the next wave of wearable tech and gearing up for a post-iPhone world).

Nobody had a problem with the jack because none of their long term product roadmaps revolved around the removal of the headphone jack. They are struggling to stay afloat as is. Even if they wanted to, how many companies actually have the courage to remove it when they know that it would be tantamount to product suicide?

repairability score is a 7? go figure.

at least its not a 2.

The one thing I'm wondering is whether the waterproofing seals between the display housing and body will be easy to replace, because they are adhesive-based. Anything sticky can be difficult to align properly. The fit has to be perfect to keep gap from forming.
