If they wanted to put the headphone jack back in, they could.

They don't want to put it back, and in a couple of years no one will care. But if they did want to, they could make it work. If they wanted to. Which they don't.

In the Plus possibly. Doubtful in the 4.7". And we have no idea what they have planned for the next iPhone. Some kind of wireless charging hardware maybe.

Is it me or is there an empty space at the top where a headphone jack could fit?
It's not you. The headphone jack could go where the second speaker is. For those that don't use their phone as a handset (held up to their ear) to make phone calls, it would make sense to replace it with a headphone jack. Maybe someone will make a few bucks modding iPhones like that.

Does the Verizon variant use the same Qualcomm X12 as pictured in this teardown of the Japan model? I'd like to read more about the modems in use in both US variants and how those modems affect daily use. Anyone have a good technical article?

Great. Now we can clearly see the battery is ... SMALLER than the 6s.

Also, that the haptic engine is massive and had it been 2-3mm less in height the headphone jack would clearly still fit.

Reminds me of that anecdote from Steve Jobs:

When engineers working on the very first iPod completed the prototype, they presented their work to Steve Jobs for his approval. Jobs played with the device, scrutinized it, weighed it in his hands, and promptly rejected it. It was too big.

The engineers explained that they had to reinvent inventing to create the iPod, and that it was simply impossible to make it any smaller. Jobs was quiet for a moment. Finally he stood, walked over to an aquarium, and dropped the iPod in the tank. After it touched bottom, bubbles floated to the top.

"Those are air bubbles," he snapped. "That means there's space in there. Make it smaller."

I read (falsely, thankfully) a few days back the zoom lens did not have stabilization. They show it does, whew.

You read correctly. Only the f/1.8 28mm lens has OIS. The f/2.8 56mm lens does not. Basically they added OIS to the lens that needed it least.

The cameras....

So here is an enhanced version ( + sharpness, + mid-tones ) of the photos from iFixit that shows the two cameras, top is the 28mm F1.8 camera with OIS ( gold contacts & corresponding "feet" on lens, wider exit area out of the chrome front plate for movement ) and the 56mm 2.8 camera that does not look like it has OIS, just a direct mount to the sensor and focus housing.

Both cameras have large rear elements that show how well they cover the sensor area of each array, the 56mm being slightly smaller than the 28mm. Now then...the sensors do look slightly different, but I can not really tell if one is smaller than the other, just the non-photo sensitive area of the 56mm 2.8 brighter like we normally see sensors in DSLRs, mirrorless, etc. If the 56mm 2.8 has OIS, I am just not seeing it so the facts will have to present them selves.

At least this will give folks something to pour over / talk about....

The 56mm lens uses a smaller image sensor than the 28mm.

f/2.8 56mm lens: 1/3.6"
f/1.8 28mm OIS lens: 1/3"

So they put the OIS on the faster lens with the larger sensor, lol.

You've never had a problem with the headphone jack, so why do you have one now? How does it interfere with your iphone if you dont use it?

It's always after Apple takes something away when the fanboys assert it's uselessness. Nobody EVER complained about the headphone jack on iPhones, none of these guys telling people to "get over it" fretted about Apple's reluctance to switch to Lightning headphones. Not a one of them complained that Apple was behind in wireless audio tech, despite the fact that some of their competitors already had proprietary BT audio formats with purportedly superior sound quality.

The iPhone 7 Plus camera array is as expected, including two separate sensors, two lenses, and two sets of optical image stabilizers.
I thought the tele-lens does not have OIS?!

Now:

Would be nice if Macrumors would indicate if they have edited an article. Otherwise there will be more confusion and nobody will know where that info came from.

I don't think people are arguing that, perhaps more to the point why is the taptic engine such a "vital" feature? Because they removed the push button? Was that necessary? Maybe not when a full-screen buttonless iPhone comes out but this isn't that phone. We've quite literally got solutions put in where there was no problem in the first place and lost some functionality (3.5mm jack) for it - also some fake holes that needed additional waterproofing components (and cost) for nothing, quite literally nothing.

It's more precise. Even without the fake button, we benefit from a better Taptic Engine.

Thing is I don't want "good enough", I want better than that, and wireless will very soon be the better solution, and now Apple is forcing it that transition will happen even faster.

Current BT wireless tech lacks the necessary bandwidth to match wired sound quality. Only a completely new wireless protocol would solve the bandwidth problem, but there is no sign of such a tech on the horizon.

Except maybe wifi?

Love how now apple is ignoring its own marketing. The big deal about AirPlay was that is could do Lossless audio streaming with a 36mbps bandwith for cleaner audio over what Bluetooth's could achieve. Bluetooth was the original wireless audio "good enough"

Too bad wifi is so power hungry because otherwise it could be a solution to the bandwidth problem. It would require some pretty big honkin' earbuds, though I guess larger conventional headphones could house the electronics and battery. But they would be expensive, and hot, and that's a lot of Li-po battery to pack right on your skull.

Priorities... I'm sure a poll of iPhone users being asked if they'd prefer to have a 3.5mm jack and larger battery (because lets face it that Taptic Engine is huge and definitely eats into available space) or slightly better "feels" would mostly go the way of the practical over the fanciful.

They and all the apologists on MR are pushing 'wireless' but I will NEVER use wireless; I dont' want to be bogged down with ANOTHER device I need to remember to keep charged all the time. And what happens when the battery life is done and I'm on the go? So pointless.

I could go look up the faster horse quote, but you get the idea.

True, but seriously, better vibrations adds very little for the space it takes up in the phone. Fine for a future model with no home button, doesn't really add much with this particular iPhone.

What if the vibrating action isn't really for the home button. Apple has opened it to third party apps after all...

Imagine a special plastic adapter that slips over one's iPhone and focuses the vibrations to a specially formed tip. Create an app to enable someone to send custom vibes live and in real time. Add some wireless headphones and heavy breathing and you've got the next killer app!

To be fair, this is the 7 Plus. I doubt the 7 has anything like this bumper covering the fake speaker grille. They design the phone for the smallest size, and the larger size gets some extra space. But, not enough for a headphone jack.

still not a very innovative (or courageous) use of free space given their claims.

As I suspected, there is no room in the iPhone 7 to add a headphone jack if they wanted to.

I have been utilizing BT Jaybird BlueBuds for years now, and in the same small case I keep those, I have a nice but inexpensive pair of wired earbuds as a backup. I would never give up the convenience of wireless, despite the occasional inconvenience of having to take out my wired earbuds every now and then. I find it laughable to hear someone complain about being "bogged down" by something you have to do occasionally, like charge your headphones, yet have no problem being constantly "bogged down" by wires just so they avoid occasionally having to charge something. I'm sorry, but taking 5 seconds to plug an extra device in every other night, when I'm already plugging my phone in, for the convenience of wireless freedom is a no brainer.

The 56mm lens uses a smaller image sensor than the 28mm.

f/2.8 56mm lens: 1/3.6"
f/1.8 28mm OIS lens: 1/3"

So they put the OIS on the faster lens with the larger sensor, lol.

Can anyone please explain why there is OIS on the wide and not long lens?
