Apple isn't a Carrier. So you will always be specifying a Carrier at Apple's site on preOrder night unless you're buying phone factory unlocked. Apple's servers that night will know you're upgrade certified.

What about if you choose Reserve for in-store pickup, when you choose that option that is still check to see if have a upgrade or not ?

Yep. They sure do.

That's a good method too. If you don't mind waiting the extra day after launch day. I've heard of people getting their phones on Saturday or Sunday easily when they use that method

ATT NEXT user here.... You pay that balance off then they give you time to send in your old device -- after the pay off is complete your free to upgrade via att or Apple. I went through att last year and ended up getting my phone like 2 weeks late... so I'm going with Apple this time... Judging from last year they always get phones out on time reguardless what the site says.

OK.... so just to have this clear: If preorders are next weekend (9th or 10th) but the rumored release is the 23rd..... and I do the turn in my current phone back to ATT.... does their 10 days to return the phone start next week or the day we receive our new phone? Cuz the 23rd is more than 10 days after preorder day.....

Yeah.. Important question. Apple, AT&T, Verizon and whatever carrier you have would never expect you to be without a phone for any period of time. So The KeyNote speech is next Wednesday the 7th I believe.. The PreOrder will begin next Saturday night (10th) at midnight PDT.. 3am on the East Coast. Then the phones won't deliver until 2 Fridays later. You would not be expected to return your 'leased' phone until 10 days after YOU RECEIVE your new phone. So if your shipping is delayed.. and you don't get it until a week or maybe more after launch day.. then it would be until 10 days after that that you'd be expected to return your old phone.

It's only logical that no company would expect you to have a period without a phone.

And another question: So in order to upgrade (i.e. order my phone next weekend).... I have to make a payment on the phone. However my next billing period ends on the 13th. I'll have already ordered a phone, but not received it.... Is ATT going to bill me another payment for each phone?
[doublepost=1472839521][/doublepost]I decided to just call:

14 days to return the phone from the day the phone is shipped.

if I get charged another payment once I order my phone, I need to call but they will remove it (however I the system should stop processing any future payments if it works correctly.)

I can still order through apple once.

I forgot to ask if they send boxes to ship the phones back....

My understanding is that you have to pay off ALL payments still remaining WHILE you're ordering online on PreOrder night. Whichever online or phone app you're using will take you to a page to pay off your remaining installments first. So I'm not sure how any additional installments could come out AFTER you order the new phone.. BUT weird things have happened with ATT.. LOL Thanks for calling an getting that data Caligurl!

Dude..... if you think you have to pay off ALL the payments AND send your phone in... then I've got some property to sell you!

But I'll explain it to you:

Depending on you the NEXT plan you chose you have a certain number of payments that you have to make in order to RETURN YOUR PHONE and get an upgrade. There are still more payments to be made after that in order to pay the phone off completely, then you get to KEEP your phone.

In our case, I chose NEXT 12 which meant I paid 12 payments of the 20 that it was broken into. I get to return the phone and get a new phone. If I want to keep the phone I pay off the balance owed.

What I pay to upgrade and return the phone and what I would pay to keep the phone are two different amounts (and they both show up in the app.)

So for my phone since my first payment was my October bill.... I still need to make a September payment in order to upgrade. If I make one final payment of $47.45, I can preorder my phone, then return this one to them. If I wanted to keep my phone I would have to send them $427.05.

So the reason I was asking about the payments is, if I make the ONE payment needed to upgrade... I won't have my phone before my billing date on the 14th. I wanted to know if they were going to bill me the $47.45 since I would not yet have returned the phone, so in reality I still owe them for the remainder of the phone (until they receive this one.)

Got it?

OH... and I'm not waiting until preorder night to make that payment. I don't need to take the extra time for two separate phones. Preorders are stressful enough without adding that step to it. So i'll make the final payment for each phone over the weekend and be all ready!

Well I will have to decide when I bought my iPhone 6 + I stood in line to buy my iPhone.

Just spoke with Verizon. My contract date is up 9/29. They refused to move it up. A 10+ year customer with 2 lines. And part if a large corporate relationship. Didn't matter.

Geez that sucks my contract with Verizon ends 9/19, but when I log in online to my Verizon account it says I have early upgrade if I do it via Verizon.

I see that early upgrade offer on mine too. That's only if I want to ditch my 2 year contract and go with the Device Payment plan. I'm thinking about doing that. I could do the iPhone 7 preorder on whatever date they start, and I might save a little in the long run over a contract.

Well I just called Verizon CS and here is what they told me so since my contract ends on the 19th they told me to call a day before the Pre-Order and let them know the situation and they told me I can call in at Midnight when pre-orders open and they are wiling to override the system with a manager approval to give me the upgrade early. So call Verizon CS and see if they will do it for you too.

Apple: Gives you AppleCare+ with the device and ships to your house, probably before it hits stores.

AT&T: Gives you an expensive phone plan + crazy high overage charges + little data for outlandish prices + poor customer support for your shiny new phone
Verizon: Gives you the most expensive phone plan + poor customer support.
Sprint: Gives you one of the lowest cost cellular plans + great customer service + no cellular service outside of major cities.

Pick your poison based on your needs.

Thanks- Mine ends on 9/16, just about a week after the likely preorder date. May give that a try.

You don't have to school me on anything, my friend… lol I've been doing this a very very long time. Every word of every paragraph there I already knew. I'm on next 12 also. Not sure why you thought I didn't understand. It's saying right now at AT&T I only have $85 to pay off to get my next phone. So thanks but that was a lot of writing for nothing… :)

Your plan is exactly mine too. I wasn't sure AT&T would accept the payment early. But I think they will. I will also pay off $85 long before pre-order night.. :).. I was interested in what would happen if people didn't do that. I Also have $470 to pay if I want to own it.

Okay.. So for those of us with AT&T on NEXT already and this is our first year we will get to turn our phone in for a new one How will AT&T handle that on preorder night? Will they just expect us to eventually mail our phones back to them or they'll charge us for it?

Hey man, not sure if someone already answered this, but I didn't want to read 2 more pages of responses and then come back...haha.

I pre-ordered on Next through Apple last year for the 6s Plus. You will NOT get a box to send your phone back in to AT&T with your Apple order. You will be expected to send it back yourself. My situation got all messed up and they tried to charge me for not returning my phone. So I took it into a company store and they printed out a shipping label for me to send it back - I had to pay for my own box to send it in, too. As well as some bubble wrap to keep it safe in transit. Total BS. They won't take your phone back in-store, which is idiotic to me. I got the charge overturned, so it was just a hassle.

So just be careful. You're responsible for sending your old phone back if you don't own it outright yet (obviously).

Oh, and I see above you all talking about early payments to get the payoff before pre-orders: they WILL accept the early payment and you'll get your eligibility established. I did this also last year for my 6s (billing date was the 14th).

Okay.. so I'd like to shave off those precious seconds on pre order night that could mean getting my phone on launch day or waiting til later..

I have 85$ due on my NEXT 12 plan right now.. Does anyone know if I go pay it right now... will their servers be updated tonight.. So I can just pay tax on my new phone and complete transaction? I know we talked about this a little before.. But has anyone done this the last couple of day and got immediate confirmation that they were upgrade eligible with ATT?

I was in the same boat...chatted with AT&T CS and they said yes if I want to keep the phone I had to pay it off before pre-ordering the 7 tonight. This morning I paid off the old phone and it was immediately reflected in my account. I even did a test run with a 6s in the Apple Store app and when it checked my AT&T account it did not show a trade in required like it did before I paid it off. So yeah, pay it off today!

They update immediately. I did mine about a month ago and it reflected online right away.

THanks all!!!. I just decided to 'take one for the team'.. and tested.. The reason I was reticent.. was that when I got to a certain place in the transaction.. I was afraid after paying off - it would take me to an 'ordering' window.. (and it did.. :( )

SO here's what it does. You DO have to go in through the CHECK UPGRADE AVAILABILITY set of windows.. YOu go in there and choose UPGRADE... It shows you 3 options.. 1)PAY OFF EXISTING PHONE (lots of $) 2) Payoff remainder of NEXT payments (for me $85) and 3) Buy a new phone factory unlocked... SO I chose the $85 option.. It asked me a series of questions about the condition of my current phone.. Get past that.. and it lets you choose your credit card.... you pay it off.. GREAT.... BUT!!!! It says.. TURN IN YOUR PHONE WITHIN NEXT 10 DAYS... UGGH... it then takes you to a window to CHOOSE YOUR NEXT DEVICE AND PAY FOR IT!!!! That's what I DIDN'T want to see.... cause there's no way to log off at that point.. So I just quit out of my browser.... They should have a choice in that window.. of "ORDER PHONE LATER..."

But when I went back into a new browser window and relogged into my account.. NOW it showed MY LINE as UPGRADE eligible.. YES!.. AND it just said, next to my phone line..
"Good news! This device is eligible for an upgrade. Just trade in your qualifying AT&T Next smartphone."...

SO I think that means that tonight when I preOrder.. I won't have to go through the pay off $85 thing.. and my phone return date will be tied to my shipping date of my new phone.. 10 days after new phone arrives..

SO.. all that sound correct for your experiences??
