THanks all!!!. I just decided to 'take one for the team'.. and tested.. The reason I was reticent.. was that when I got to a certain place in the transaction.. I was afraid after paying off - it would take me to an 'ordering' window.. (and it did.. :( )

SO here's what it does. You DO have to go in through the CHECK UPGRADE AVAILABILITY set of windows.. YOu go in there and choose UPGRADE... It shows you 3 options.. 1)PAY OFF EXISTING PHONE (lots of $) 2) Payoff remainder of NEXT payments (for me $85) and 3) Buy a new phone factory unlocked... SO I chose the $85 option.. It asked me a series of questions about the condition of my current phone.. Get past that.. and it lets you choose your credit card.... you pay it off.. GREAT.... BUT!!!! It says.. TURN IN YOUR PHONE WITHIN NEXT 10 DAYS... UGGH... it then takes you to a window to CHOOSE YOUR NEXT DEVICE AND PAY FOR IT!!!! That's what I DIDN'T want to see.... cause there's no way to log off at that point.. So I just quit out of my browser.... They should have a choice in that window.. of "ORDER PHONE LATER..."

But when I went back into a new browser window and relogged into my account.. NOW it showed MY LINE as UPGRADE eligible.. YES!.. AND it just said, next to my phone line..
"Good news! This device is eligible for an upgrade. Just trade in your qualifying AT&T Next smartphone."...

SO I think that means that tonight when I preOrder.. I won't have to go through the pay off $85 thing.. and my phone return date will be tied to my shipping date of my new phone.. 10 days after new phone arrives..

SO.. all that sound correct for your experiences??

Hi there,

I'm in the same boat. I had 1 more payment to fire off to total 12 payments out of 20 so I could upgrade tomorrow morning with no issues. Here's how I did it:

Login to ATT > Click "Bill Details" next to the amount by the "Make A Payment" button > Hit the drop down on your line to reveal more info about your installment payment > Click Manage Installment Plan > Here you'll see how far you are along. Mine said "Payment 12 - Pending" because my bill wont be processed and released to me until next week probably. Obviously I couldn't wait due to pre order tomorrow so you click "Make a Plan payment" > Click Continue > And select you just want to pay off your 1 (or however many payments you need to be upgrade eligible) payment to become eligible. I paid my $37.50 and I was done.

There's a few buttons at the end that say like "Choose an upgrade device". I just clicked "Return to Billing" and completed the above process for my other line. Confirmed eligibility looks good via att site and apple site.

I hope this is helpful for anyone. Let me know if you have any questions.

I paid off both of our phones yesterday (when I saw the post about the deleted tweet from apple saying presales were starting after the keynote! haha!) both phones said eligible for upgrade immediately.

Nope. I didn't get taken to a buy a phone screen. Also didn't have a buy factory unlocked option. Only two options for both phones was to pay $40 something payment to upgrade or balance to keep phone. It did say 10 days to return (which is not what they told me on the phone the other day.) and it did say I would a label in the box with my new phone, to return my current phone .

Yes it was a confusing process to say the least. I didn't know about the make a payment window and the person on AT&T chat didn't know about it either. So as usual AT&T doesn't know what they're doing over there… bottom line is my line is fully upgraded now and ready for a pre-order tonight. At which time I will be sent a box to return my old one according to the website.
