I'm not inclined to believe just yet that they'll really get rid of the jack entirely. Besides using it for headphones, a lot of self-employed people / small businesses are using the Square reader via their headphone jack. Make that disappear and suddenly a lot of the user base basically gets pushed out =/

Part of me says everything makes sense if they incorporate the truly wireless charging technology rumored. Just imagine, your phone, headphones, and watch charge while you are in your room, office, or car by simply being there with no effort. But than, a part of me says, that sounds too good to be true, and it has no chance of making it to iPhone 7.

If it won't ship with Noice-canceling Earpods, apple has no real advantage so sell an iPhone with no headphone Jack to the broad mass.

No headphone jack, no iphone 7 for me or all of us that bought high end headphones with 3.5mm headphone jack.
I hate adapters so no to that to. This is a really bad idea!!!!!!!!
And this idiot idea about thinner and thinner phones is MAD!

This is where switching to USB-C would be nice - it would allow for a much wider range of accessories and also open the door for cheaper accessories that don't have to license the lightning port.

Seems dubious. It would be silly for them to remove a feature without being able to show an obvious benefit. Noise reduction would be a huge benefit and would go a long way to making me not sad about needing special headphones. Good noise reducing earbuds cost $200+ on their own.

Anyone ever notice that "Analyst" sounds a whole lot like "Random List"? As in a random list of guesses.

Lol...although this rumor of the death to the 3.5 mm jack is starting to gather some steam. If this turns out true, I wouldn't mind it being replaced with another speaker.

My brain goes to ANAL (skip) LYST, at which point I am already cringing.

As for this change, I'll buy the $ 20 Apple adapter from a cheap knock off source for $ 1.00 when it's ready.
Probably a few.

very pleased they are waiting to 2017, more time for apple inc to change their mind & keep the _world standard_ 3.5mm headphone jack.
That's not how I read it. I thought it was suggesting the 3.5mm would be gone, but the new Lightning headphones wouldn't be noise cancelling - that feature would come in 2017.

No 3.5mm jack wouldn't work. People seem to forget it's not just mobile devices that have 3.5mm jacks, everything has them. Computers, HiFi solutions, radios, cars, everything. I'm not buying some adapters for one device just so that I can listen to my music. If my 6S gives up, or I feel the need to switch, I'm buying the device that has the ports for the accessories that I already have. If you want to change the industry standard you do it for the entire industry asap, not just one company with only 2 (non-Plus and Plus iPhones) of the products in their entire product line.

Don't even start about Bluetooth headphones. That means a: buying new headphones (sorry but I like my wired Sennheiser Momentum a bit too much for that) and b: a batter that doesn't last even a day of continuous use.

When buying third party headphones. :p

Exactly...now you'll have your "iPhone headphones". They can't even connect to your Mac.

If Apple is hell-bent on looking to remove dated tech, they should remove mechanical harddrives from all their Macs and use SSDs.

Are you referring to the 5400rpm drives recently used? Or spinning drive tech in general? SSDs don't yet have the capacity that many consumers demand, so a balance needs to be struck.

I'm wondering how happy people are with their 5400-based Macs. Did it turn out to be a non-issue?

Regarding Lightning-based headphones, I do agree that Apple needs to streamline tech across all platforms simultaneously. And if they are going to go the proprietary route, bring that to the Mac, too. Imagine if they simply used a Lightning connector on the new MacBook instead of USB Type-C? Or if Type-C is so great, why not drop Lightning entirely and just use C across all products? It's this patchwork connector tech that creates the mess and consumer confusion.

And referring to Apple has AAPL... I find that annoying. There is a difference between the creative Apple and the financial engine that Wall Street sees.

There is no difference. All those people being creative for Apple have stock options in AAPL. It's their incentive for being there and creating things that will make the company $ because when the company makes $, AAPL tends to rise making their options that much more valuable. If you think they are being creative out of altruism you are mistaken.

Yes, I meant the 5400RPM HDD. They could use Fusion Drives that offer both; especially now that they lowered the SSD space in Fusion Drives, it would be cheaper than ever.

I don't agree with making everything proprietary. At some point, it harms consumers more than helps. I already worried about having to carry separate headphones for my iPhone (I'm not doing Bluetooth as I have 4 items to worry about charging).

I love this whole thing. I've gotten a drop of water in my headphone jack by accident and messed up my phone more than once because of it. Plus a never use the headphone jack. I always just use bluetooth. I can't remember the last time I used that phone jack. I'd much rather a waterproof phone than the jack. Just me though. :)

I agree. In fact, any public company should be referred to by its market code - it makes such good sense.

That sure seems like low hanging fruit, so to speak, doesn't it? I mean, there is a massive tangible difference in performance. Removing the jack doesn't gain us anything. The problem is the former lowers Apple's margins and the latter does not. :(

I don't really mind them getting rid of the headphone socket if they include a lightning to 3.5mm adaptor in the box

Then again, I use my iPhone in a Melting shop and have not had a problem with my headphone jack.
