She's self employed.

For anyone who's interested, she finally went into an Apple Store yesterday. Their advice was to buy a new one, get the old one repaired and just return the new one within 14 days. So that's what she's done.

I thought that was a dishonest way of doing it, but that was the store's advice, so I guess not.

If that's what Apple advised, then they obviously don't see it being an issue with any type of deceit.

At least there is a resolution to the problem.

in no way is that dishonest...please enlighten..?

The screen is so badly smashed, I reckon we should expect it to need to be sent away.
Late-to-the-party reply, I know, but what the hell! :)

They'll just replace the screen no matter how smashed it is - as long as the damage is confined to the screen, that is. All of the sub-components of iPhone screens are fused together these days, so if only the front glass is cracked, and the touch layer and LCD panel are OK, it won't matter. The screen can't be repaired in any way, only replaced.

This is because it makes the panel thinner (because we all want thinner everything all the time, yes?), and also minimizes internal reflections between the various layers, and also makes colors colorier and blacks blacker. Unfortunately it also makes repairs more expensive, but alas. Such is life.

I buy a phone to try it out, decided I don't like it, return before 14 days.....how the return period works.

I buy a phone KNOWING I will return it before day 14, dishonest.
How? It's a 14 day rerun policy no questions asked. If it's dishonest why would the apple employee recommend it?
[doublepost=1485029674][/doublepost]What if someone wants to try an iPhone for 14 days but they know they can't afford it? Yet they know one day they will. But they just want to try it?

That's dishonest?
[doublepost=1485029780][/doublepost]What about the countless people in here and worldwide that couldn't decide between 4.7 and 5.5 inch so they bought both. Both to try for a week or so.

I did that. I was dishonest by doing that? I knew I would return one iPhone.

I'm surprised Genius didn't offer a loaner phone. I thought that's what they did when you had to send in your phone for repair and if you absolutely needed a phone, that they loan you a phone for the duration of the repair. Not sure why he suggested buy a new one and once the broken one is fixed, return the new on back? Odd

IMO yes

Yes I've asked around to my family members, and got some yes as well.

To every scenario but one. If you buy 1 4.7 and 1 5.5 inch bc you arent sure which one you want, there is nothing dishonest about that. Being unsure of which iPhone you want isn't dishonest. I got a no on that from all of my family members.

That's why there are demo units in the store to feel and play with, to see which size you prefer to try out.

I could see the 4.7 vs 5.5......

Sorry, I didn't bother to read the other responses in this thread, but if you purchased the device with a high-quality credit card (e.g., most of the AMEX cards), you may have new purchase protection. Don't know if the damaged device falls within this category. I know AMEX Blue offers 90-day new purchase protection up to $1000 per claim (an iPhone would qualify).

This is one of several reasons I buy all of my big ticket items with my AMEX card.

Another option would be to file a claim with your house insurance policy issuer assuming your deductible is less than the cost of the standalone repair costs.

If you're deliberately using an expensive thing essentially for free (you'll be refunded in two weeks) with no intent of keeping it, you don't consider that dishonest? Seriously?!

You're putting wear on a device and greasing up with your hands and dead skin cells which you're not going to use. You're consuming Apple resources when they have to refurbish the phone you used for free, costing them money.

The sense of entitlement in some people never ceases to astonish me. Just because you can abuse a system doesn't mean it's okay, and certainly not moral, to do so! You know the internet memish saying: "this is why we can't have nice things."

I would agree with you, except that the company that one would be dishonest against, was who suggested the action, thus making your point moot.

An employee which is just some random guy, whose morals may be as questionable as the next guy.

The return policy is obviously intended for people who buy something and then realize they can't or don't want to keep it; and not for people who wants a free high-end smartphone for two weeks. Jesus friggin christ, it's unbelievable to me this is even a discussion topic.

Your attitude is abysmal on this thread and your derogatory rhetoric is uncalled for. If it's unbelievable to you with this discussion and topic, then you don't have to comment or Move On. But there are very valid arguments in this thread. Yes the return policy is obviously intended for people to buy something, but clearly that's not what Apple advised the OP to do in the first place.

The OP was advised and exercised their options of what to do with the broken iPhone. Regardless of the employees actions or Morale, if something was to be considered as dishonest, that would fall on Apple. And not the customer who is following the "Professional" advice they were given.

As Willmtaylor stated, your point is moot.

Apple Store does walk ins without appointment you just have to be there right when the store opens. You will have the phone fixed in 2 hours.

Some random Apple store employee does not speak for Apple, so you can't draw the conclusion that it is company policy to abuse the return policy in this way.

You do understand what would happen if lots of people routinely got into the habit of buying an iPhone for just under two weeks, only to return it for a refund, yes?

How about you email Tim Cook for everyone, and we'll wait to hear back. That way, we (and by "we" I mean "you") can feel better about the whole situation.

In an always busy store and perhaps 3-5 minutes?

I didn't get my 7 plus and 6S until Christmas, two years in a row. That was after I had time to try both sizes in store, at both Apple Store and Best Buy.

I guess I could just "rob" a preorder from someone who already had their mind up a couple months earlier for my own entertainment of trying a phone I was just going to return...

Very good point. My bad.
