Apple went from "tick-tock" to "tick-tock-tock" schedule. Disappointing. And I won't buy a phone without a 3.5mm jack anytime soon. I have $500 worth of 3.5mm connector earphones that work just fine and want none of this Lightning port stuff.
You can.
That'll be 29.99...

I hope Apple has really just doubled down on secrecy for real.

Because, based on rumors, nothing substantive is happening on the iPhone or Mac lines.

They promised incredible stuff in the pipeline and if what looks like is coming is it, I won't be fooled again.

Tim Cook has said that line every single year since he became CEO. When do you stop believing?

I hope you're wrong about the tick-tock-tock cycle change. There will be A LOT of upset customers that have signed up for plans that upgrade yearly. I'm normally not that excited for the S cycle but this last one didn't even have me think twice. Hopefully Apple is holding some awesomeness back for 7.

That wild guess is almost certainly wrong.
One change in one year, doesn't necessarily portend a permanent change.
It is more likely due to two phones being in coproduction for launch only half a year apart & needing the Pro to be as different as possible from the standard phone series.
I'm looking forward to them both...

This isn't entirely true, supposedly the new Macbook Pro was quoted as being one of the most complex and advanced mass-market electronic products to date from one supply chain leak. I assume this will be a complete redesign internally and externally with all new custom silicone and SOC's, metal injection moldings, zero plastic, fingerprint sensor and OLED "function" bar.

I've bought every iPhone since the iPhone 4 on launch day and I have to say, this is the first year where I'm not looking forward to the release. I don't mean to be negative and I know nothing is official, but the rumors tend to be somewhat in the ballpark and releasing an iPhone this year with more fragmentation between the two models by giving one a dual camera and not the other, not adding features such as wireless or fast charging, and not giving it a bigger battery for the sake of somehow getting it thinner and I'm just concerned. I know someone will say something that it isn't out yet, or then don't buy it, etc. But I've been a longtime customer of Apple's and I don't want that to change because the product begins to lag behind the competition. I love Apple, it's products and the ecosystem and don't want to change, but I need something to be excited about at least haha.

I think Apple will remain on a tick tock schedule, this year will be the exception. 10 years from now will be the other exception. Financially it makes sense. Apple doesn't want to invest in a new phone design this year only to go into the 10 year anniversary with an S model or another redesign.

Looking at the iPhone 7 rumors, the camera will be significantly upgraded over the current models which is a huge plus. Hopefully the front facing camera will be upgraded as well due to it being significantly behind Samsung on that part. I'm guessing HD Sound is the next selling point which I'm rather meh on but need to experience it first. What else could they upgrade that could drive sales? Battery life? Not sure what else they can do physically that would generate significant interest?

At this point, next year's iPhone better be the best thing since sliced bread because Apple may be starting to lose steam.

Well considering how slow they are updating their MacPros, Macbooks, and AppleTV, does it really surprise anyone that they would not be slowing down the iPhone line as well? Lately, it just seems TCs way of doing things.

No headphone jack, no sale.

I wonder if Apple realizes that while the 3.5mm jack has been around since roughly 1890 it is among the most prevalent connectors on the planet. They are as ubiquitous as wall outlets, USB Type-A connectors and the modular connector (phones, ethernet cables etc)

This is about as smart an idea as deciding to get rid of the standard Edison wall outlet.

Other than the 20th anniversary Mac, I don't think Apple has had any other milestone products. I hope they don't start with iPhone.

Expecting an updated ambient light sensor for the True Tone display.

I was on the fence about upgrading. But if the new iPhone gets True Tone I'm definitely in for an upgrade. It's a game changer. Once you've experienced True Tone you'll never want to go back. The technology is similar as in importance to retina when Apple started pushing that.

That big of a difference on iPad Pro huh? Awesome to hear, makes me more excited for iPhone 7.

Some minor changes are coming to the front of the iPhone 7 that will render protective LCD films made for other devices unusable on the new iPhone ...
Because I'm always trying to fit that S7 edge screen protector on my iPhone 6

lol! As far as that has gone, thinner will not be better. We don't want PAPER thin iPhones.

Speak for yourself. This is exactly what I want the iPhone to be, the sooner the better. A flexible screen that can be rolled up, or folded down to the size and weight of a credit card, all things being equal to the current performance or better. And this is exactly what Apple is striving for -- a future where the phone is minimized as to what the customer has to carry around while still providing all the features we're used to today. At some point the headphone jack will have to go as we approach that future. If Apple has a good solution to replace it now, I'm all for it.

For starters, you think this thought never occurred to Apple? You think someone from Apple just read your post and ran over to Tim Cook's office screaming "what have we done!?"? Doubtful.

The 3.5mm connector has really only been ubiquitous since the 1980s as the Walk-Man gained notoriety, and did not become the standard for all mobile audio until the iPhone arrived. Moreover, it did not appear until around 1964 in the first transistor radios.

As for USB-A connectors, well those are on the way out as sure as USB-C is the replacement. Modular RJ-45 connectors on phones? Who uses a land line anymore? Ethernet? Going the way of the dodo sooner rather than later, possibly replaced by USB-C.

And those Edison (or NEMA) wall outlets? Well they're already replaced in most of the world outside North America, requiring adapters for use with non-compatible plugs. Yet somehow international travelers have managed for years.

I'm old enough to remember a time before USB-A. We had serial and parallel, and you could make your own cables with parts from Radio Shack.

I remember a time before modular RJ-11 connectors on phones. We had giant four-prong plugs. I'm not old enough to remember when phones were typically hard-wired, but that was a thing, too.

I've lived in homes that had two-prong power outlets. To plug something in that had a three-prong plug, you had to use an adapter. These had a metal ring (sometimes at the end of a wire) that you were supposed to connect to the screw which held the outlet cover on. Otherwise you could burn your house down. I never saw one connected, though.

The only thing constant is change, and there will always be adapters. How else are you going to play a cassette tape on your 8-track player?

With all the rumors, leaks, however you want to characterize them, about the iPhone 7 being a minor tweak of the 6S a couple of questions come to mind:

1) Would Apple spend much time on this at a typical fall iOS Event? I'm thinking, no, not much to hype and not look silly. So then, do you think there will even be separate iOS and Mac events or just one big fall event for presumably MBP, iMac, iPad Pro 13", maybe AW? Maybe AppleTV?

2) With the iPhone 7 apparently just a hair's difference from the 6S -- A10 processor, better camera maybe, but no headphone jack -- do you think Apple will just EOL the 6s completely and keep the 6, 6+ as the mid line just to ensure there is enough feature room between the the two price levels? Personally if my choice was the 6S or 7 I'd pocket the extra $100+ and take the 7. But in reality I'll just keep my 6 until the 8. Still curious though how everyone thinks this will shake out.

I think these lack of rumors and the likely cost saving of keeping the same form factor means that Apple will lower the price of the iPhone by $100 this Fall. Since the 6S was internally a big upgrade from the 6, the 7 will be an even bigger upgrade for all you 6 users. Increased RAM and a processor that is 75% faster than the 6 is going to give you performance that you can really notice. Throw in a significant camera improvement and I can't see a guy like you deciding that they are rolling with another year of the 6.

I do wonder about what Apple will actually sell. With the SE using the A9 processor, that seems a great way to keep the A9 processors buzzing. Switch the Apple TV to an A9 processor (while you EOL the Apple TV 3) and then you've got a way to use that manufacturing capacity. I'd kill off the other 6 lines and simplify with the cheaper 7, while the SE already has a low enough price to still be cheaper still than what I think will be the next iPhone price point.

Apple's margins will be protected by the cheaper cost efficiencies of doing the same form factor and the increases in revenue from Services. And units sold will be juiced by the lower price point. Also that will put pressure on competitors, likely putting a few out of business because there is less space to exist as a budget alternative.

I hear you. But the battery life on the 6S is already quite good. And if Apple has improved efficiency using a smaller CPU the battery life might easily be improved between the 6S and 7 and there is no way the rumor mill and supply chain would figure that out. I would like a charging system like the watch where I just lay the device down and I don't have to fiddle plugging it in at the end of the night. But speed of charging is absolutely meaningless to me. Half an hour of charging on the current cord delivers a ton of juice. Certainly more than I need to get home or somewhere else I can charge. So why more speed?

But if you, like me, have the 6S then this might be a version we skip. Maybe this is marketed more to the folks who are still on the 6. You know if will be a big upgrade from the 6 because the 6S is already a nice upgrade from the 6. The better camera and the 3D touch is a nice feature (though I only use it on the keyboard to move the cursor; but that enough is very useful)

Imagine if they moved the ambient light sensor/proximity sensor under the display like the Apple Watch and we could have cover to sleep/mute on iPhone as well....please please please

Ha -- so the rumor is no major substantive upgrade, AND the customer still has to replace all of their accessories? Even my SE can use all of my 5s accessories.
I have no accessories other than a 12 South Book Book case. I really like the case, but it's becoming less useful. I had too many plastic cards in it, and it looked like a George Costanza wallet. I've tried to cut back on the number of cards, and the pockets are too loose to hold them securely. If I don't pick up my phone carefully, cards fly everywhere.

Honestly, I was looking forward to September as an excuse to get a new case. I'm waiting to see whether the dual camera is coming this year. That will heavily influence my decision.

True Tone sounds nice, but if it really makes a big difference, maybe I'm better off without it. Next year could be True Tone OLED. Waterproof sounds nice, but I can risk it until next year. I want 3D Touch, but I don't have it on my iPad Pro 12.9", so maybe I should stick to the old 2D touch for another year.

Apple could surprise me, but it looks like dual lens camera is the killer feature for me. After crushing my hopes yesterday, this article says it's back. So, yay!

'Edge to edge" way over do. OLED also over do. iPhone needs to catch up to Samsung.
And the embedded home button will be a nice surprise. Agh

Or the steering wheel of a car. Oh wait, Apple is rumored to be building a car. Maybe we'll see a touch pad steering solution prioritizing gestures to control the car's direction. I mean, this damn steering wheel has been around since the advent of automobiles, who wants that old tech?
