Thanks to all of those folks that suggested using the Apple Store App, I sat on my iMac for quite a while not able to login (that was after the wait for the Store to be back up). Got my 8Plus 256 in Gold, can't wait...

Ordered at 3:02am via App:
  • iPhone 8 Plus Space Grey 64GB
  • Apple Watch Series 3 42mm Space Grey with Grey Sport Band
  • Belkin Wireless Charger
iPhone and Watch will arrive Sept 22

iPhone 8 Plus 64GB pre-ordered through my operator for 759EUR (911USD). Sadly it's as good as we get here in Europe with the lousy exchange rates Apple offers, but it's a lot cheaper than buying from Apple directly. Pre-ordered directly from Apple, I was looking at 919EUR, so I thought a 17% discount was ok.

I was originally planning on the iPhone X but I've been warned this will cost over €1,000, so Apple can stick that where the sun don't shine!

To those getting 8 Plus over X, could you help a brother out on your thoughts to skip the X? It would really help me with my decision!
Also congrats on your purchase!
Cheers!

X is more narrow screen, if you are used to the plus screen it's going to feel cropped, and cramped. With the 8+ you get the same exact phone with a different screen on front, and you lose the home button, which is going to be a pain in the ass until they release Face ID 2.0 which will probably be much quicker. The only advantage you get from the X is OIS on the telephoto lens, which no one really uses anyway, and then OLED screen. Tbh though the screen on the iPhone 7, 8, 8+ look phenomenal already. iPhone X doesn't even have a brighter screen than the 7, 8, or 8+. $300 is definitely not worth it.

If you don't care about the money, you should at least wait for next year's X, where they will actually be updating the camera (16 mp), adding pro motion, and maybe even putting a home button under the screen, or potentially least fixing the notch.

^ I'm not saying it's an unbiased opinion :D

I kind of goofed. I ordered an unlocked 8+ at midnight and had to cancel that and then order the same one just for my carrier this morning. Which is why I'm glad they didn't all sell out. I thought I could just buy an unlocked phone, have them put the exiting SIM card from my 6+ into it and it would work. Then I found out Verizon has some kind weirdness going on with the cellular bands and you have to have a phone that connects to their band or whatever.

Dood, I just want my phone and no issues.

I have a grandfathered unlimited plan on Sprint and was able to get the 6S+ with a contract. I was able to choose the 8+ on Sprint contract and now it says my plan is not an iPhone upgrade plan!! They want me to do their dumb new plans which I would end up paying a lot more per month which I don't want. Anyone know if Sprint completely got rid of contracts even on grandfathered plans or if I can go into Costco or Bestbuy and have them do the upgrade?? Any help would be appreciated

Yes, they're gone.

iPhone 8 Plus vs the X:

Identical CPU
Identical GPU
Identical RAM (3GB)
Nearly identical camera
Superior battery in the 8 Plus

Sure, I'd love to get it all in a smaller package, but it's not worth an extra $300 to me. Maybe if they'd thrown in AirPods I'd go for it...

Basically, the 8 Plus is the apex, the pinnacle of what an iPhone with a Home Button will ever be. Refined, tested and true. The X is a prototype, a cool trick that points in the direction Apple is moving, but will take a couple more models to get *just* right.

The base model 8 Plus is still $1200 after tax. For a phone I'll keep 2-3 years. If I spend $1500 on the X, I'll feel like I need to go the full 3 years before upgrading to get my money's worth. I'm trying to remind myself that this won't be the last iPhone I own, just my 4th iPhone, with many more to come. I'll have Face ID 2 years from now when it's been perfected.

Prices in Canadian dollars.

For me the iPhone 8 would've been perfect, just if they'd put a 1080p OLED display instead of the ageing 750P LCD display. I will wait another year and see what's available. Also the prices are becoming ludicrous and I'm far from being poor. I actually had my debit card sat next to me while I watched the keynote just in case preorders for the X went live straight away.
I'm not hating on the X, I'm sure it's a great phone but the notch + pricing + no Promotion or TouchID makes it a no sale for me.

Come on Apple, iPhone 8S with a 1080P OLED display!

I'm considering if I should buy an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. I've had a iPhone 6 and now owning a iPhone 7 but I love the iPhone Plus since it is such a beautiful phone. On the other hand.. The phone is so big... What do you guys/girls say? Anyone with small hands using an iPhone 6 Plus / 7 Plus? Opinions :p?

for anyone who knows better than I would..

First, there are two wireless chargers available in the apple store - mophie vs belkin. what's the good word there?

Second, seemingly wireless charging should work with very thin cases - i.e. the apple silicone case. does anyone foresee an issue with the silicone case heating up and cooling down due to the wireless charging possibly a dozen times a day or more?

In at 12:01, reserved within seconds. (Nice pre-setup  with the returning Up to Date customers). 256GB 8+ (moving up from regular 7). In store pickup not possible for me, so mailing it is. Sadly won't deliver on release date for some reason. Delivery on the 27th. :(

I'm a guy with average size hands and don't have any issues with the 6+ (pre-ordered the 8+). As everyone is different, the best advice is to hit up the closest wireless store or Best Buy, Apple store, etc. and see how a + device feels to you. One-handed use was never a big deal or must-have, and I totally love the 5.5" screen now, so the choice was obvious for me.

Don’t have small hands but I went from the 6+ to the 7. It really depends on how much you use your device one handed. The plus phones get REALLY annoying and cumbersome if you mainly use your device one-handed. Honestly, I do miss the large screen sometimes, and I’ll probably go back to a larger phone after this one. But just know, if you mainly use your device one handed, the plus sizes get really tiring over time and the regular 8 will probably be a much better fit for you. If you use your phone with two hands the large majority of the time, go for the larger size.

I believe the SE has the guts of a 6 not 6S but regardless, my point was that the available product line was ridiculously fragmented.

That said, if I'd seen an SE for €130ish, I'd pick one up too as a backup or for family members.

Nope, 6S. The only difference between the two is on the front facing camera, which is 1.2MP on the SE and 5MP on the 6S.

The issue isn't fragmentation either, as there isn't really any confusion between the models available at this point.

I think a lot of people may be holding out until the X.

I also think a lot of people just don't want to upgrade this year.

However, we will never know why the process is smooth this year. My guess is because of the X. But again, we can speculate all we want.

I still had some trouble this morning ordering, so it wasn't 100%.

Maybe I am delusional or refuse to believe that people aren't interested in the 8...who knows?
People are interested, they just are interest much more in the X apparently. If Reddit and websites like this are a good gauge, people are just waiting for the X to drop unless they A) Really can't get over that notch, B) can't afford a thousand dollar phone or C) they're like my dad and just don't need all the bangs and whistles. I woke up this morning at 8am Pacific and ordered him a Space Gray 64GB iPhone 8 to replace his well worn 16GB 6.

A person probably won't have too hard of a time walking into a store next week and getting an 8.
Wonder if we'll see pictures of people lining up outside of Apple stores or carrier stores trying to get the 8.
I doubt it

Granted the 8 for the most part has the same specs as the 10 but the 10 is the all new design and people like new.
Yes it's a $1000 phone but when you can spread that payment out interest free with only a $20 or so bump to your phone bill a lot of people aren't going to notice it. Now if they had to drop $1000 at the time of purchase we'd be looking at a whole different ball game but because of the payment plan I think some here who said they weren't going to buy it are going to wake up that friday morning look at the apple store app and say I woooooooonder if I can beat out others and to try get one.
It's like gambling.

I want a 10 my only hang up is I think the early production models will have issues. Work is getting me the 8P so I have something to tide me over while I wait for first hand reviews to see if I should wait for later runs or wait for the S model but if I happen to roll over Friday morning before preorder starts, the temptation to try and order one will be great:D
Even if early production models have issues, it's all under warranty. Apple will fix or replace it, I've never let that get in the way of me ordering a phone day one. But anyway, it's now 12 hours after launch and delivery dates haven't budged, which I think means this iPhone 8 is officially a flop. I mean, even the new Apple TV 4K is selling better than these phones. I knew it wasn't going to sell as much/have as much demand as pervious years but this is abysmal. Don't get me wrong, the 8 is a beautiful phone, especially the Gold model, but I think Apple seriously misjudged the demand for bezel-less iPhones. Ordered two 8's last night for my mother and sister (they need new phones, but really don't care about the model), but I'm honestly thinking about just cancelling the orders and getting them the X. But with new rumors of supplies being constrained until mid-2018, that may not be easy.

I wished they allocated more resources into making stocks for Asia. Many of the 256GB Plus models slipped to 2-3 weeks within 10-20 mins of the store opening earlier today. Not to mention that a 256GB 8 Plus cost about 1200USD here, quite a bit more than everywhere else.

interesting a sim-free version is available at launch. wonder if that's because they don't expect much demand?

Would be nice if the iPhone X offers that but it's not currently an option. maybe will change

EXACTLY! Next month is going to be horrible. This pre-order is going smooth only because nobody wants what is basically an iPhone 7S.
I’m glad. The 8 plus will be faster and more powerful than the X with the same gpu and A11 but pushing fewer pixels and face ID tech. I like the bezels and home button. I’ll get an X next year when it’s better. This year will be the best iteration of the current form factor.

The unlocked will work on att and t mobile correct? Sorry, new to Apple.

Yes, the unlocked, sim free will work on ATT and T-Mobile. I just started to click through to buy a 7 and 8 just to get to the FAQ and they both read identically:

“SIM-free” means your iPhone doesn’t ship with a carrier SIM card. The SIM-free iPhone sold on apple.com and at the Apple Store is unlocked. That means you’re free to use a SIM card from any carrier that provides service for iPhone.

Or maybe they just had enough to go around this time. The spin some people take makes me laugh. That being said, the fact that there are more CHOICES may also determine who buys what. A lot of people I talked to said they don't want to upgrade yet because their phones are "perfectly fine".

Just because the process has been smooth doesn't mean people are uninterested. There are billions of people on this planet.

It isn't spin. The 6S was also very very easy to get on launch day.

The iPhone 6S has been a major disappointment for Apple
The iPhone 6S had a set of relatively unappealing upgrades compared to the iPhone 6.

Sound familiar?

I pre-ordered a 6S+ after midnight on pre-order night, walked into the Apple store on launch day, IMEI wasn't in VZW's database, told them I couldn't take it. I then went home (same night, launch day) ordered a VZW 6S+ online for pickup, and went back to the store the next morning to get it.
