Like I said - negativity. I don't care what direction it comes from. And it's okay to not like some aspects of a new phone. But a lot of us assume that if a few nerds on a forum don't like something, the other 98% will follow suit.
The other 98% didn't follow suit though. The 5C sales prove that. Compared to other models of iPhones around that time, the 5C sold a lot less. Everyone jsut either did not upgrade or they bought the 5S.

Could history be repeating itself here?

The 7 looks like the best buy. Keeping mine for at least another year. Hopefully the X will be more refined and come at at a power price in a year or two.

I am really considering this option right now. I have a 64 gb 6S but would like to upgrade. I may just take the cheaper option bumping up to a 128gb 7 and see what next year brings.

Personally, I was slightly underwhelmed by the X, and didn't realise it's as big as it is - I've got tiny hands and the Plus is too big for me, so the X would be way too big. I also can't justify spending £1000 on a phone (the 8 is expensive enough), so I'll be getting a 8. Don't need the all-signing, all-dancing X. Just my own opinion.

Question. I am due for an upgrade with my AUP... if I go at the apple store tonight, do I get the new iPhone 7 pricing ? (Reduced from yesterday)?

The iPhone 8 lineup seems like something that doesn’t need to exist. I guess it’s there only to have somethings new to sell for those not willing to buy the X. For existing 6S or 7 owners I don’t see much point in upgrading.

It's a pretty good upgrade from a 6 64GB to an 8 256GB for me, even at around 50 quid more than it should be. I don't think it's going to get any better for tech prices here in the UK either, so I'm getting in before it gets even worse.

If getting the 256 GB model, it's really going to depend on what your getting for an extra $300 is worth it for you. Basically the value proposition for iPhone X is for $300, your getting the iPhone 8 Plus (including the battery life benefits) in close to an iPhone 8 form factor, plus OLED/super retina/more coverage display (albeit fake edge to edge).

If that is worth the premium... which I think it might be? Then the X does have something over the 8.

Steve jobs once said you can't push the limit of pricing.
I won't hold my breath for a massive sea change, but with the 8 offering so little materially over the 7 and the eye watering price tag, at the same time I wonder if this could be the straw that broke the golden goose?

Not that I expect it matters to Apple, they probably make the same margins on the 7 and 8, so the cannibalisation wont matter to them...

What was Apple thinking?

iPhone 8+ 64 GB: $800

iPhone 7+ 128GB: $769

The biggest differentiating factor between the two? Wireless charging... which WON'T be available without BUYING a new accessory NEXT YEAR.

Why Apple? Just why? Who in the marketing department said "This makes total sense"?
You must of missed where it was sitting on top of a Belkin wireless Qi charging pad...

This is how I am looking at it as well. It's actually $200 extra if you were planning on the getting the + model like I was. I am only getting the X because it is a totally new design, I can't look at those huge bezels anymore!

The way they've priced the 8... definitely makes the X the more attractive option, indeed makes it seem almost reasonable which I guess is what the reality distortion team is trying to achieve

That depends on the country though. The 5C sold very well in the UK and was hugely popular with teenagers. It was 2 year old tech but significantly cheaper than the 5S at the time to be more viable for parents to buy for their children.

Right... the only thing that is making this more difficult is the lack of TouchID in the iPhone X. Instead of getting everything... you have to subtract the cost of not having a Touch ID... which I don't know how much we can really say the value of that is, I just know it is super convenient for unlocking my phone today and FaceID will probably be less convenient and slower.

I just wanted to stay in the Apple ecosystem for that post.

With that being said, add an extra $30 for that feature for a total of $830. Is an additional $60 for wireless charging worth losing half the storage space? Again, I think the vast majority of people would say no.

I didn't disagree with everything else you said. :)

You know if you look at the apple site, the 8 actually is slightly thicker, deeper, and heavier. 4.87 for iPhone 7 vs 5.22 for iPhone 8.

That processor must be heavy, then again.. don't forget 4K recording at 24 or 60 fps! You also get this over the 7:

Fast-charge capable:Up to 50% charge 30 minutes

The new 8 plus is heavier (7.13 oz to 6.63 oz) and cost $180 more then 7 plus. For what? 128 gb storage & "bionic" processor?? I'm keeping my JB 7 plus for a while...
Yeah it's an absolute sumo of a phone... I always thought the 6s+ was more awkward to handle than the 6+ due to the increased weight, and this puts it up again

Yup, nothing like 4k 60fps recording eating up your small storage space pretty quickly. I agree, quicker charge is nice, but with the iPhones already great battery life, I still think double the storage space is more useful for all of your pictures and videos that you can record/view every single day.

Yeah, the 64GB is a joke at this point. I would have probably picked 128GB if the option was there, but Apple wants to cut costs and make money off of people who can't afford high storage, and people that can pay for maximum storage.

The neural engine I think is something that could be worth it, having all that processing in a small device. What would it be used for if not for FaceID, that is the question.
