USB-C is also proprietary for the most part. You think it's free and anyone can just use it?

Every corner convenience store sells Lightning cables these days. I have yet to see a single one selling a USB-C cable. No thanks.

Uh, where do you live? USB-C->USB-A-cables are everywhere. There's a lot of phones that use USB-C by now.
I find 3.5mm headphones everywhere, I don't think I've seen a pair of lightning headphones anywhere...

Oh, and the "licensing cost" to use the USB logo is $3500. Not really that much of a cost for any decent company.

Apple charges $4 per connector:

Considering the rumoured iPhone 8 design and price, I've been seriously considering switching over after 8 years of owning the iPhone. Not much has changed and iOS 11 is kinda underwhelming. Been putting off switching over to the other side for a while now and I think it's time I took the plunge.

Still going to wait for the Apple keynote just in case there's any surprises and for the Google Pixel announcement, but I think following todays Galaxy Note 8 announcement, it's looking like the prime candidate for me to switch over. The competition is too good these days to resist.

No need for me to switch yet. Looking forward to the keynote.

You won't miss Touch ID if they have good 3D facial recognition instead. Your phone will be unlocked before you'd even got your finger on the button.

This. Since we're apparently ditching the headphone jack, the world needs ONE standard connector so that accessories are inter-operable.

Bummer. Lightning really needs to die.
My guess is that you will have both, touch id and facial recognition. You might want to turn of the facial recognition, and only go with you finger print.

I wish the copper was more...Copper?

There is a 7/11, a CVS, and a Cumberland Farms within a block of me. None of them sell USB-C cables. They all sell cheapo (for some reason colorful) Lightning cables.

Not saying it's a dead standard, it's just not as common yet. The most annoying thing about USB in general is that it keeps changing, all the time. In the time Apple has used two mobile charging standards, USB went through at least five. There is now USB-C gen 2, so it's not clear that USB-C cables bought last year will work with devices purchased next year.

I am all for having a universal open standard. The USB consortium is hot mess though and they always have been. At least with their walled garden and proprietary cables, Apple is consistent for long periods of time.

If this phone can't spit out winning lottery numbers before they are even drawn and allow me to telepathically communicate with aliens then it's just another piece of tired old Apple crap. Can you believe that you STILL can't bore a hole in time to look at people and events from the past as they are happening? What's wrong with Apple anyway?

Dang, my upgrade date is less than a week after that release date. Guess I'll be waiting the 6+ weeks it'll take for a second batch to become available to upgrade.

I think the iPhone '8' will launch alongside the iPhone '7S' and iPhone '7S' Plus - reason being to elevate the price of the "PRO" iPhone 8!

I think this will be the naming convention for this year will be iPhone X, iPhone X Plus, iPhone X Pro or simply iPhone, iPhone Plus and iPhone Pro, to make them all seem fresh and new, not 7S and 8.

iPhone X, iPhone X Plus and iPhone X Pro will all launch September 22nd, 2017.

Pricing would be as follows:

iPhone X (4.7" LCD Display, A11 Chip, All New Glass Design, Upgraded Optics)
64GB $649 ($27 per month)
128GB $749 ($31 per month)
256GB. $849 ($40 per month)

iPhone X Plus (5.5" LCD Display, A11 Chip, All New Glass Design, Upgraded Optics)
64GB $769 ($37 per month)
128GB $869 ($41 per month)
256GB. $969 ($45 per month)

iPhone X Pro (5.8 Edge to Edge OLED Display, Facial Recognition, All Glass Design, Wireless Charging, 3D Camera)
128GB. $999 ($47 per month)
256GB $1099. ($51 per month)
512GB. $1199. ($55 per month)

Old iPhone 7 and iPhone 7Plus

iPhone 7
64GB. $549 ($22 per month)
128GB. $649 ($27 per month)

iPhone 7 Plus
64GB. $649 ($27 per month)
128GB. $749 ($31 per month)

32GB Capacity will be upgraded to 64GB.

Would be nice for Apple to offer the iPhone X Pro (iPhone 8) with 64GB for $899 but thats wishful thinking!

Will see what happens!

512gb in a phone? Is this a rumor or just something you've conjured up because I doubt that's technically feasible in the size of the phone.

And there is no way the 256->512gb upgrade would only be 100 dollars. It costs 200 dollars in a macbook to make that same jump and the size constraints would be easier in the macbook.

They're all getting wireless charging there would be no point in putting glass backs on the 7s/7s plus (or whatever they are going to be called) if not.

Maybe because he assumes that the facial recognition system will be similar to that of Samsung which you may trick just by using an instagram photo of the person. If the facial recognition is much more advanced (3D-sensing), secure, fast and also works in the dark, it will be a mind blowing indeed. Anyway, Im wondering how the facial recognition would work to unlock the phone since many times you actually dont want to unlock it but to check some notification on the lock screen. There should be some sort of tap, touch or some kind of gesture to activate the facial recognition and the whole point of facial recognition is that you dont have to do anything. We will wait some weeks and see. Anyway I will miss TouchID. It was super elegant, fast and secure solution.
I'm trusting, no expecting, that Apple has thought of and addressed all those (valid) issues you mentioned.

However in my opinion, ultra-reliable and super-fast unlocking will be so awesome that after using it for a while, it will make TouchID feel sluggish and dated.

And for sudden, unexpected security issues, there'll always be the option to quickly revert back to Passcode.
TouchID.... RIP

As we approach the end of August and the time that Apple typically sends out invitations for its annual iPhone reveal event, a new report by Mac4Ever [Google Translate] has pegged this year's iPhone 8, iPhone 7s, and iPhone 7s Plus event date as Tuesday, September 12. The site then predicted the three new iPhone models will go on sale a week and a half later, on Friday, September 22.

The weekdays match a pattern that Apple historically follows each year, setting an event on a Tuesday or Wednesday, and then actually launching the new iPhone a few weeks later, on a Friday. Mac4Ever's prediction is sourced by information gained from a few French telephone carriers, but at this point any general event date guess on a Tuesday or Wednesday in early September could end up as the winning date chosen by Apple, so continue to take these event rumors with a grain of salt.

iphone8dummymodeltrio.jpg

Apple's financial quarter ends Saturday, September 30, so it's likely that the company intends to have its iPhone 8 event early in September, followed by the launch a week or so later. This would provide enough leeway between the launch and the end of the quarter to account for a boost in iPhone sales figures.

For this reason, in the first week of September, Wednesday, September 6 is an option for the event, although Tuesday, September 5 is less likely due to its close proximity to Labor Day the day prior, which would likely require press to travel on the holiday. If Apple held an event on September 6, the iPhones could potentially launch Friday, September 15.

The second week of September includes Mac4Ever's predicted date of September 12, and Wednesday, September 13 could also potentially be a possibility for the event. Either of these dates suggest an iPhone debut on Friday, September 22.

Looking back at the past few years of iPhone launches, the previously mentioned dates are most likely when users can expect Apple to announce and release the iPhone 8, iPhone 7s, and iPhone 7s Plus.

[*]2012 -- iPhone 5 -- announced September 12, released September 21
[*]2013 -- iPhone 5s/5c -- announced September 10, released September 20
[*]2014 -- iPhone 6 -- announced September 9, released September 19
[*]2015 -- iPhone 6s -- announced September 9, released September 25
[*]2016 -- iPhone 7 -- announced September 7, released September 16
The September iPhone event is also rumored to see the unveiling of a 4K Apple TV and potentially the Apple Watch Series 3, although when those products would launch is unclear. The same event will also see Apple delve deeper into new features surrounding iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, watchOS 4, and tvOS 11.

My 6s plus is barely a toddler. She's not ready to be replaced.

This is nonsense. There is no "mess" going on right now with USB-C cables. It's a ridiculously fast and powerful open standard while lightning is both inferior and proprietary. You're not only using mental gynmastics to justify parting with your money, but you're also trying to justify something that hurts the tech industry as a whole.
Try googling "USB-C incompatible". I would go through all of the variations of power and data incompatibilities but I honestly do not know all of them. And I do not care to know about them because I am happy paying a little more for a proprietary standard that is controlled by one entity instead of many. That is also why we had the USB-C cables that were blowing up laptops last year too.

It's just as easy to argue that proprietary standards help industries rather than hurt them and the nature of tech and capitalism dictates that we'll always have this issue. So why not let the best solution win or let both live in harmony which is what we've been doing for 40 years now.
