Anyone know how the double tap to bring the screen down could work without a fingerprint sensor?

That was not a job for the fingerprint sensor at first place. It is done by the home button regardless of the fingerprint functionality. A home button - even virtual - will be present in the new device according to rumors, so you will be able to double-tap as before.

TouchID better be present on this phone. It could easily be placed into the Apple logo on the back. Oh, and USB-C. Catch up with the times, Apple! Lightning is sucky proprietary crap.

If you're happy to settle for a rear-facing Touch ID, and don't like Lightning, may I suggest an Android phone?

Considering the rumoured iPhone 8 design and price, I've been seriously considering switching over after 8 years of owning the iPhone. Not much has changed and iOS 11 is kinda underwhelming. Been putting off switching over to the other side for a while now and I think it's time I took the plunge.

I would argue that, yes, it has changed - just things like the home screen have stayed more or less the same, because they got it right first time.

I often wondered about switching, but having seen AR Kit I'm glad I didn't. Plus, I keep hearing small things from Android users that surprise me, like "on the Samsung Galaxy you can only store one fingerprint".

A more likely reason is because the Intel modems are cheaper than the Qualcomm modems.

That might be true but it doesn't erase the fact that the price for the "world" model is identical to that of the GSM-only or CDMA-only models. They are all the same price, it's just that the "only" models are limited to certain carriers or regions.

It is proprietary, but not sucky at all. Even if Apple went USB-C I suspect they tightly control what could be done with it. E.g. there won't be a generic USB-C software layer sitting behind it. Also, lighting is being used on the Mac these days too, to charge the keyboards and trackpads. Which makes it really nice that the cable is siting there for the iPhones and iPads to connect. So, I don't see apple going away form that given that USB-C won't gain them anything for what they want to do. I could be wrong though.

Why would you still want TouchID if the coming facial recognition feature is rumored to be mind-blowing?
Maybe because he assumes that the facial recognition system will be similar to that of Samsung which you may trick just by using an instagram photo of the person. If the facial recognition is much more advanced (3D-sensing), secure, fast and also works in the dark, it will be a mind blowing indeed. Anyway, Im wondering how the facial recognition would work to unlock the phone since many times you actually dont want to unlock it but to check some notification on the lock screen. There should be some sort of tap, touch or some kind of gesture to activate the facial recognition and the whole point of facial recognition is that you dont have to do anything. We will wait some weeks and see. Anyway I will miss TouchID. It was super elegant, fast and secure solution.

When will they start selling unlocked phones at release? I don't want to use one of the big four and be tied into their phones. I like switching carriers at will (and use MVNOs) and all the new iPhones for the last 2-3 years are able to be used on any carrier just sell me an unlocked one for full price on release day already.

I hope that means the new Apple Watch models are coming during that time, too. I have a SS series 0 and I am dying to buy a new one (my company pays up to 600 dollars for fitness/fitness equipment each year).

$600 for fitness equipment and you want to buy a watch? Don't you think a bike might give you better results? Just a thought. ;)

Can't wait for new iPhones. However, I'm curious to see if/when Apple will have a major update of the Mac Mini and Mac Pro. Pretty much everything else has had an event to show updated models. All the Mini & Pro have had was maybe a few quiet speed bump updates.

USB-C is also proprietary for the most part. You think it's free and anyone can just use it?

Every corner convenience store sells Lightning cables these days. I have yet to see a single one selling a USB-C cable. No thanks.

I'm sure lots of folks on here are ready to buy once again but in general the outlook for smartphones is not so good.

It makes sense. Once Apple finally relented and gave us larger screens there isn't much more for them to give us. The modest spec bump each year really doesn't buy you much anymore. If you have a 6 or 6s was there any reason to buy a 7 other than the need to have the newest? Not many people want to waste money like that. My not buying the 7 was the first time I've ever broken the 2 year upgrade cycle. I've had the original, the 3G, 4, 5, 6+ and didn't buy the 7+ because it was a joke of an upgrade and the 6+ is more than enough. The earlier iterations had much larger jumps in processing capability allowing iOS to do more and more, but now that isn't a whole lot that the last few years of phones can't do to push you to a newer model. Cell phone technology has finally matured and there is no more generational jumps to be seen in the near future. Just like desktops and laptops before them, cell phones have now peaked and only get modest changes each year. How many people buy new desktops or laptops ever year? or even every 2 years? I'm still rocking a Retina 2012 MBP and I love it. Thats 5+ years of use out of my laptop, I see no reason phones won't be the same going forward.

I'm still on an iPhone 5. Seriously. Not joking.

White is looking fine.

Black is boring.

And the other maybe it's maybelline color will be great for females.

Because I don't want to hold my phone up to my face to unlock it. I like unlocking my phone with my hands, like every other regular human being.

I think the point is that you won't have to "hold it up to your face". All you'll have to do is look at the device. If it isn't faster, easier, and more reliable than Touch ID, then they've failed.
