As an Apple user, I don't care about cable compatibility with other manufacturers. I want compatibility across my Apple devices. So I hope Apple keeps lightning, so I can use the same cable to charge my family's iPhones, iPads, and AirPods. Making the new iPhone different will just cause cable confusion, lol!

I believe the industry is moving to a complete wireless experience, not an internal USB-C connection. Better a complete wireless solution with a charging dock with USB-C.

They changed the original connector after 5 years. The current connector has been around for 5 years. Its about time to upgrade everything to USB-C. It will also encourage companies to start making USB-C a standard for every device so Macbook Pros can be used with more devices without dongles sooner rather than later.
Well no. 30 Pin had been around a lot longer than 5 years. It launched in 2003.

Really hoping it'll be just USB-C on both ends of the cable and not any Lightning garbage. Proprietary connectors are unintuitive and anti-consumer.

Then Apple needs to include a handful of adapters per purchase. Because I am not repurchasing 20+ cables.

I had the iPad 2 when lightning came out. So, I had to drag around both 30pin and lightning. Now I have a 7Plus and Air 2, only need one cable. Not about to start dragging 2 cables around again.

Thats great and all but how about bumping up to USB 3 speeds as well. Not so much for the iPhone but needed for iPad especially if they keep marketing it as a business laptop.

Totally agree with the above comment.

I can get behind this, only if the inferior USB C port stays on the brick, not the phone. And provided Apples comes up with some sort of way to fast charge without causing harm to the battery.

There's a reason why I only use the 5W lump for overnight charging.

They need to use USB-C on both sides of the cable, and not USB-C to Lightning. Just my opinion (and a lot of other peoples based on comments I've heard and read throughout the past couple years)

Explain to me why Apple "needs" this? Also, why hasn't Apple done if they "need" to do it?

I think what you meant to say is "I want Apple drop Lightning for USB-C on their Devices," but you've failed to understand why Apple wants to use Lightning or the benefits to both Apple and to their customers by using Lightning. Yes, there are certainly benefits to customers if they used USB-C as that is clearly the de facto standard going forward, and not just for mobile devices, but there are also clear benefits to Apple's customers by Apple having some checks-and-balances in the accessories that can connect to their mobile devices, which goes back to the days of the 30-pin iPod connector.

Queue the complaints from MR readers that they'll have to switch from all their current iPhone chargers. Faster charing is horrible!!!!!
I hope (and assume) that the phone will still support standard USB charging with a Lightning/USB type A cable, so we can continue to charge from existing chargers, car adapters, computers without PD, USB ports on planes etc. (with slower charging speeds of course).

Apple could also opt to include a female USB-C to male USB-A adapter in the box.

I doubt this will happen. While I do wish they would sell such a proper adapter, separately.

A proper Type A (plug) to Type C (downstream facing receptacle) Adapter is a very desirable product, which many people want to buy. A proper adapter would contain a microcontroller, or at least some logic array, and a set of switches. A proper adapter handles two problems: reversible orientation, and switching-on Vbus only after cable is connected.

Faster charging is great, but I need faster data transfer. Where's USB3? Filling a 256GB phone takes forever!

Luckily, the two go hand in hand!
Check reviews of the same charging that they’re talking about: currently available on the largest two iPads!
USB 3 data speeds AND power delivery!

I meant only as far as the iPhone is concerned.
I'm fairly confident lightning isn't going anywhere anytime soon though. They just changed to lightning headphones last year. It would have made sense for them to wait an additional year and include USB-C headphones and go that route; if thats what they wanted to do. But who knows.

Awesome, i'm mostly satisfied with this. My only wish would be for USB-C to USB-C charging. The argument for lightning is becoming harder to make with all of the advancements USB-C has brought to the USB standard.

Meanwhile, the Beats Solo 3's wireless use mini USB. ARGH

I hope all this speculation turns out to be true. May be finally time to upgrade my iPhone 5.
